A friend tossed off the line "Hope was on the ballot, and they voted it down." That's the inspiration for this song. I hope that I can give back the hope they stole from him.
Lyrics
Capo 4
Verse 1
A Asus4
You say: Hope was on the ballot
G G9
And they voted it down
F
Punching out their angry pick
G G9
With a vicious frown
A Asus4
Joy was on the ballot
G G9
And they threw it away
F
Voting for their hateful spite
G G9 E
Just to make us pay
Chorus
F G
They think they’ve won forever
A Asus4
‘Cause they’re so full of hate
F G
But they don’t know it doesn’t last
A Asus4
It’s just too little, too late
F G
We will live, we will survive
A Asus4
We will outlast them, too
F
When their hate has burned them out
G A Asus4
We will be here, me and you
Verse 2 You say: Hate was on the ballot And they voted it in Punching out their angry choice With a vicious grin
Dumb was on the ballot And they hugged it tight Happy in their anger And in their fear and spite
Chorus 2 So watch me wrap myself in joy As I defy their hate Watch me hope for a better world While they’re still too little, too late Hate is temporary Hope will never die They can’t take our hope away And hope will never lie
Bridge
F
Because hope is the best of all good things
G
And never really dies
A Asus4
Even when things look hopeless
A Asus4
Hope gets back up and tries
F
They can vote it down or throw it out
G
But they can’t take it away
F
I will hope until the end of time
G E
Because hope will always stay
Verse 3
Sometimes it’s hard to do it
Sometimes it’s hard to see
Beyond their hate and anger
Living in your head rent-free
But even in the worst of times Hope will stand by you Reminding you of who you are Defending what is true
Chorus 2
Verse 4 Let’s put hope back on the ballot Let’s rub it in their face Let’s make them see us hoping In every time and place
Let’s run a joyful platform And find hope everywhere We will be unstoppable And give them quite a scare
Chorus 3 So let’s wrap ourselves in joy And let’s defy their hate Now let’s hope for a better world While they’re still too little, too late
And now let’s grab for happiness With everything we do They can’t take our hope away We will be here, me and you

Indeed a great line "hope was on the ballot and they voted it down" so glad that could make a great opening line. The whole fist verse is splendid with colorful language like "angry pick". I typically think hope is negative thing, but this song sets out to prove me wrong no doubt.
Thank you. I need this. I haven’t stopped hoping but hope has seemed to be in hiding.
Joy is an act of protest. ❤️❤️❤️ This is a song I want to be able to keep listening too after FAWM. I love it!!
Yes!
Oh thank you for this hopeful sentiment. As much as I like the ragers, the hope is truly what is going to take us through all of this. Not the hate. Great melody and chord progressions too!
Wow, this is a very positive song and very much needed in these tough times
There’s a lot of protest songs this year. Guess a lot of FAWMers need this month to come to terms with the current reality. I like that you settled on a positive message here, while there is so much to be desperate about there must be something to keep us going. Strong write, thumbs up!
Solid ideas progressing through this song. A sound and uplifting message. This deserves multiple voices in the chorus especially. Nice work!!
The way you've written this, focusing underlying emotions and principles, it could apply to many situations even while I can still see the specific inspiration. I especially found these parts moving:
"Hope gets back up and tries"
"But even in the worst of times Hope will stand by you Reminding you of who you are Defending what is true"
I relly like the way you played and performed this song. Nice job.
