Green Light

Liner Notes
Christ, this went through a few iterations. This started out as a fuzzy power-pop guitar song with some ridiculous melisma going on. Then I found this lovely synth pad that I liked - then I decided I didn't like the vocal melody - then I decided the beat was too much - then I binned off the vocals completely and thought about it being an instrumental - BUT THEN.. I remembered how much I've loved doing spoken word songs over the years. I've been uploading some of my short stories to Substack (https://substack.com/@adamfollett909020), most of which were written at least a year ago. However I started a story about a month ago that I've been refining, and I decided I wanted to adapt it into a song. So here it is! If you subscribe, you'll get to read the proper full story itself when I get round to finishing it..
I'm not going to tell you how to enjoy my song, but maybe reading along with the lyrics as I speak them is probably the best way
Lyrics
i shouldn’t tell you this story it’s uncomfortable, and messy the kind of story you’d bet your house on being fiction but it’s the god’s honest truth
Two teenage brothers four years between them their parents, both astronauts, dead. halfway to the stars a single firework in the sky now the boys live with grandma
the older boy once a bookish 17 year old now a school drop out smoking drinking petty crimes the younger boy a recluse locks himself away plays a video tape of his parents aboard the international space station on repeat dad holds the camera mum weeps as they look out the window back at earth “look, boys” mum says “the sky is alive" it’s the aurora borealis the northern lights the younger boy’s face up against the screen as ribbons of green aura dance above the curve of our planet he rewinds and watches it again
the older boys runs away from home he’s staying with a girl in the next town weeks pass months then one night, 2am stones against the younger boys window “let’s go to the countryside, bro” says the older boy “high chance of solar activity”
they steal grandma’s 5-seater they punch the postcode of a reservoir into the sat nav older boy drives, younger boy navigates the older boy, three pints in his system craning his neck, eyes fixed on the sky misses the stop sign misses the red light
grandma’s 5-seater kisses a drystone wall flips rolls and the brothers, no seatbelts, are thrown from the car older boy hits the asphalt a sickening crunch the younger boy lighter, projected further back crack against the traffic light post no movement but with brotherly telepathy they open their eyes at the same time smile at the absurdity of it all
younger boy looks up the pole swaying and the traffic light falls upon him his head punching through the back the unit resting on his shoulders like a bizarre fancy dress costume flashing red, then amber, then green “aurora borealis!” he screams over and over and over hoping his brother could see them too

Woah, incredible work here. The imagery is so colorful, literally, and the spoken word is a whole different journey - excellent story pacing too, do you ever listen to Lavar Burton's speculative fiction story telling podcast? This story reminds me of that, only with a soundtrack that drops in time with the story. The outro jam is such a bop I'm loving the crunch.
Well now I have to go hug my kid :( Wonderful story, good pacing and with a satisfying denouement. The synths were odd enough yet not distractingly so.
Wow. Love this. The build and increasing drama with the intense finale and crunchy sound. The spoken word works so well. Dark and sparkly.
Third time listener, first time commenter. Anyway, is this talking indie? YUK! I kid, this is very nice and deserving of three listens even if I’m only now getting around to saying anything. The narrative is really well constructed and delivered and I love the drama of those piled up synth pads and build of it all. The introduction of the beat and the whole coda is perfect. Love that cruuunchhy shaker especially. Beautiful
This is great. Pulls a sublime, cathartic moment out of a pitch-dark world. You Englishers.
Blimey... this is quite the ride. The story is great - so dark! The instrumentation and build is fantastic too. Really good.
Reading along with the lyrics produces very strong visuals. Great delivery and soundscape.
Oh its so sad, but wow, wow, wow. The production is so profound even as my heart is retching in my chest...
Wait, what? Hang on, tracking back.
What synth is this, making such lovely sprinkly .... oh wait the piano just joined in. OH what this is very epic Hans Zimmer shit going on.
Good god it's so prETTY!
Ah. You're giving us a rest here.
Wait
You're not ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh GOD it's sublime what are you doing here is a BEAT.
You make my jaw drop every year, Adam.
This is incredible work, Ad. The stuff you do these days is so unique and creative but without those two words being backhanded as they so often can be. Just really good shit.
This is fantastic. Love the build that sounds almost like a pipe organ really enhances space-y feel to the part about watching the video. The ending of the story was such a gut punch, so I was thankful for the electro coda to recover! Also, very enjoyable "Trigger's broom" back story!
Sensational. Beautifully atmospheric. Terrific writing well delivered.
The synthwave feel is always there but I love how this morphs through the track creating different dynamics that trigger the emotions of the ride. Amazingly lush beefy sounds - I presume this is down to some clever layering.
Wow, I love how this turned out. The synth you with fits perfectly, it feels somewhere between sci-fi and religious. I love how the vocal performance and the synth ebb and flow with each other, and the beat that comes in at the end is a great way to close this out. Great storytelling as well.
Holy Moly this is awesome. I love the three-way juxtaposition of dark story, gentle speaking style and ecstatic music.
This is so good. The sound design is phenomenal. The switch up at the end was inspired.
The horrific climactic scene happening while the music is at its most beautiful gives this an even more twisted vibe than it already has.
Favorite moment: “look, boys” mum says “the sky is alive"
I love the chords all the way through this. I did spend some time wondering in what way it ever could have been a power pop song, but when the second half kicks in it totally blew me away. Just an absolutely majestic explosion of music.
What a captivating story and wonderfully told. The build-up of the soundscape - together with the story - was hooking me as well. Love the resolve in the end with that floating feeling of the beat.
man, you really know how to hook a reader with the opening line. and the next line is just as good, and what happens next you wont believe. exciting writing, well spoken delivery, and music to heighten the situation. this is the bomb.
Can't believe I blew "steamed hams as FAWM comment" on your last song and now you go and mention Aurora Borealis. Rude, honestly. Love the storytelling here and the ambient synthwaviness blasting into orbit at the end of the story is fantastic. Weirdly this reminds me of a game I played recently, NORCO - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norco_(video_game) - which has a synthwave soundtrack, rockets and lost parents as part of the story. Not sure I've compared a FAWM song to a videogame before.
this works so well. so much atmosphere!!!
I think the organs enhance a dreamy/spiritual feel, which helps make the darkness more palatable. I like how your tone progresses towards the peak of drama at the end.
Ooh impressive shaving down of the narrative to fit it into a song. I love it! Awesome synth pad, I can practically see the green shining after mom and dad’s video! Not sure about the outtro though.. feels a bit upbeat to me to say this is the darkest thing you’ve ever written! The half skipped beat is irking me too😛 Other than those 2 things I love it ❤️
Wow almost a mini series! Amazing stuff!
This is amazing work and very visual I can see the green light literally in the music
Wow, powerful stuff! Great storytelling, so vivid and gripping. Enjoying this new tradition of spoken word output from you, keep it up please. Could have easily ended it at the finale of the story, but the instrumental section takes the journey further to reach into the stars and beyond. Beautiful, really!
