12-bar swing blues. It was time to bring out the melodica.
Listening back, I realise this isn't finished. It shouldn't just recapitulate the beginning at the end (even though that's a common jazz combo structure). It needs to develop further. This is more of a sketch, I guess, but I'm hoping it will get picked up by a collaborator who can flesh it out with sung lyrics.
UPDATE: There's a lyric version up: "Your Gospel Needs a Little Blues".
I was focused on the piano composition, the tension / interplay of major and minor thirds, and on altered scales: a bit of a mental exercise more than kicking out the jams and making it a fun ride - though hopefully the melodica does that! Definitely influenced by the first jazz piano piece I learned: Sonny Rollins's 'Doxy'. And Ellington's 'Satin Doll', Steely Dan's 'Chain Lightning'...
Inspired by our long-ago life in a Caribbean country. Our town was in a mango forest. We missed having Colorado peaches, but my wife made a mango pie and it was amazing. After we moved back to the States, she made peach pie but we missed the mangos.
Sounds: Logic Studio Piano, B3, Clavinet. Logic Drummer. Cort 5-string bass. Mugig melodica. Snippets of Mr Collie singing along.

My foot is tapping as I type this and listen. Oooh, that part at :56 is wonderful, and no, I can’t name the instrument! 😀 I like the jazzy feel of this. Nice “work!”
Mmmm.. .loving the melodica. So Jazzy blues! It's calling me. Let's see if the lyrics write themselves 😀 I also love mangoes. When i lived in Mexico, I couldn't get enough mangoes. Someone taught me a trick ( or hack as they call it these days) that if you bury a green mango in hot sand, it will ripen over night!.
I liked reading the liner notes as I was listening. A lovely feel-good vibe. My ears just loved some of the chord changes with the piano after the melodica comes in. Musicianship is top notch. Enjoyed my listen 😊
Eesch, Jon! Is there any genre you can’t do (and can’t do well)? This was just swaying away nicely and then those beautiful, bluesy jazz chords came in and my heart melted. So nice!
A satisfying take on the 12-bar blues. Love when the Hammond comes in, and love it even more when the melodica comes in, I think that first melodica section might want to be a melodica solo with no singing. :) Easy breezy and so pleasant.
(There's nothing like a good mango, is there? Here in Wisconsin it's hard to find a great one.)
This swings along so nicely and I just love the melody. Sounds really classic and convincing which isn’t easy considering how often the blues form is abused.
Everyone in my house loved this so much! My son Bowie has recently started playing the melodica and he was super inspired by this tune and even tried to play along! Really awesome! In awe of your ability to play so many instruments and put together such a succinct memorable tune like this one! XO
I came for the melodica tag and I did not leave disappointed.
There's a crooned double-entendre-laden lyric lurking under here. Oh me oh my, how I miss your sweet mango pie...
Great feel and vibe.
Nice! And shades of Thelonious Monk in there in the way you’re voicing that V chord perhaps?. Love it.!
We have mangos everywhere here! I love them but make a shocking mess! Nice tropical feel to this! The 2 lines share the space nicely.
I was very much waiting for that melodica to join the fray, and it did not disappoint. Although it seems to be provoking some odd reactions from your dog. Definitely has a sun-kissed, laid-back, Caribbean feel, shades of Herbie Hancock maybe (or is that a stretch). Anyway, I'm a fan. Of both this and Herbie.
I miss mangos too. Almost as much as \i miss your music. Im loving this bit of swing. Havent really heard a melodica solo in this vein before, and you are doing an excellent job on the solo.
Could've gone on longer and I wouldn't have complained! Nice work, Jon. My wife and I lived in Thailand for more than two years and, man, were the mangos good there! And we missed them when our next assignment took us to Slovakia.
