Love in the Middle of a Dumpster Fire

Every year during FAWM I write a love song for my husband. They're usually a little schmaltzy. Not this year. It feels surreal to be doing normal things like planning Valentine's dinner when the United States is on the precipice of ceasing to exist as we have known it. So this year I wrote a love song for the coming apocalypse.

Love in the Middle of a Dumpster Fire ©️2025 - words and music by Sharon Stepler
First thing every morning I scroll through all the news But staying well-informed gives me A bad case of the blues Every day is worse and worse They're shredding all our rights But I've got you and you've got me And we've still got our nights
The whole damn world is falling apart So baby love me right This train is sliding off the track Let's hold each other tight Let's put aside our angst for now and give in to desire We got Love in the middle of a dumpster fire Love in the middle of a dumpster fire
I remember Tricky Dick I remember Watergate I recall assassinations And the fires of '68 But I swear that I have never seen A crazy time like this Yeah, we'll resist those bastards But right now I need a kiss
CH
Bridge: I don't know how long we can take it I don't know if our country will make it No time to hesitate It soon may be too late

Nice love song in the middle of it all. As a Canadian teenager, I had a weird fascination with Watergate. Shocking that it seems so innocent now. Hoping for the best for everyone. Even in dark times, art will shine the light.
your poignant song had me scrambling for my copy of the short novel "invisible cities":
“The inferno of the living is not something that will be. If there is one, it is what is already here, the inferno where we live every day, that we form by being together. There are two ways to escape suffering it. The first is easy for many: accept the inferno, and become such a part of it that you can no longer see it. The second is risky and demands constant vigilance and apprehension: seek and learn to recognize who and what, in the midst of the inferno, are not inferno, then make them endure, give them space.” -- Italo Calvino (Invisible Cities)
We will all need love to keep us going thru these wretched times. This feels very apt.
It is indeed time to hold our loved ones, but the fire's been raging a long time, we just haven't seen it. Hold on, hold on. And pray, I guess.
I love this. I think it is very relatable and it is a time to hold tight to our love ones!
A very very relatable story these days. I hope that fire gets put out soon!
Ooh, great song! Love the way you the title in the chorus. So cool! Enjoyed a lot.
Make love not war! This song resonates sooo much with my views. This is real blues/folk/protest. Your high vocals are nicely sung Sharon!
