Losing Time

Liner Notes
Well, this one has a back story! I started it at my very first FAWM in 2013. And I finished it tonight! The basic melody was the only thing that stayed pretty much the same. Everything was rewritten with a spoken word bridge added as well. I'm pretty sure I like it now but if not maybe I'll rework it again at FAWM 2037! :D
Lyrics
Losing Time February 12, 2025 https://johnstaplesmusic.com/FAWM2025/JohnStaples-LosingTime.mp3
Chase the clouds away Paint the sky and brush away the gray You know I loved you You know I love you To this day
Take my breath away Touch my soul and celebrate the day I know you loved me I know you love me Please don’t fade
Losing time Losing my mind I guess it's almost losing time
it doesn’t matter who we were what we've done
we stood in rain in sun
we are strong weak
we follow our dreams because we seek
happiness
love
fulfillment
meaning
peace
Wipe the tears away Take my hand we’ll fly away today Our love has saved us Our love will save us This I pray
Losing time Losing my mind I know it's always losing time
Losing time Losing my mind I guess we're always losing time

This is beautifully moving, John. You hold on to the notes like you are holding on to your lover. It works so, so well.
Good things do come to those who wait...and persist. Lovely changes to this, mate. That m7 to major movement is so relaxing and satisfying. And the lyrics are touching. Completely dig this.
Well, first, the instrumental is so delicate and dreamy. Your solid, certain vocals work very well on top of it. And that is no feat to actually finish a song and get it to a place you're proud of instead of throwing it away and giving up. That's real song relationship commitment and you're both better off for it :-) Yes, I love the spoken word segment. Spoken or sung - your voice and this song are dreamy.
Ok.. I LOVE this song!!! The first thing I loved about it was the chord progression. It is captivating and unusual. For me it's almost the hook because I find myself humming it.. The lyrics are so impactful and uplifting.. I am moved by them.. Hope through everything...love conquers all...I love it! Then there's the talking part... wow, you did such a great job with that...your voice is so versatile. The singing vocals are perfect for the mood...oh, and speaking of mood.....with the talking part and amazing chord progressions, I hear some Moody Blues in there.. Or am I just showing my age!!?? Great song John!!
Your singing and playing is top notch as always. I love how you sing the last lines of the verses, such a beautiful melody, throughout the verse actually. The spoken word part was very poignant.
You know what? I should revisit some of that old stuff (in my case only going back to 2017, when I started taking songwriting semi-seriously)--what with being a LITTLE better now. Thanks for the inspiration. REALLY glad you revisited this one--it's a great song! ❤️
a beautiful love song for a sad world. love will keep us sane even as we feel our lives going down the drain.
Did you enjoy collaborating with your younger self? I just did the same kind of thing. Really nice song. Love the emotion in it.
And why not! I'll remind you if I have a memory! I like the circular feel to the chords and yup spoken adds ! Pretty music , nice one!
Great chord choices. You did a lot with what you used. I like how you talked instead of singing in the middle. The song takes you away for a while.
Just love the sound and the moodiness of this one, John. Your D to F# really caught my ear, too. Good melody. Including strings in the arrangement is a nice touch.
This has a gentle, meditative quality, like something to listen to late at night and just... ponder. Plus, the vocal melody is quite captivating! Well worth waiting for! :)
Moody Blues - that’s exactly right @rockstarsmd - really nice!
Puts me in the mind of the Moody Blues... I really dig it!
Really well-balanced mix! I really like the subtle strings that come in occasionally. They add a great texture and blend with the guitar chords in a really satisfying way. The vocals sit well in the mix, and the vocal melody makes some turns that keeps it interesting. I like that the lyrics are a bit ambiguous too. Nice work here! #tit4tat
