Lyrics

BROKEN PENCILS

Words & Music By Jerry Pettit Facebook.com/JerryPettitMusic

Scattered words on crumpled pages Broken pencils line my desk The muse has left me, I'm forsaken My mind's a cluttered, tangled mess

Chorus: But I'll keep writing, keep on trying Though every line feels out of place These broken pencils tell my story I persevered through time and space.

The clock ticks on, ideas escape me The blank page stares, a stark white field But in the silence, inspiration Whispers secrets yet unsealed

Chorus: But I'll keep writing, keep on trying Though every line feels out of place These broken pencils tell my story I persevered through time and space.

Bridge: From shattered thoughts and fragmented dreams A masterpiece may yet arise For in the struggle, we find meaning And wisdom hides in compromise

Chorus: But I'll keep writing, keep on trying Though every line feels out of place These broken pencils tell my story I persevered through time and space.

Each failed attempt adds to the mountain Of doubt that towers in my way But every artist knows this journey Takes more than just a single day

Chorus: But I'll keep writing, keep on trying Though every line feels out of place These broken pencils tell my story I persevered through time and space.

Outro: These broken pencils are my tribute To every artist's uphill climb For in our failures lie the lessons That help our spirits learn to shine

Though every line feels out of place These broken pencils tell my story

These broken pencils are my tribute To every artist's uphill climb

From a good lyric, my favourite couplets.

Thanks so much for your VERY awesome comment about The Turning World ❤️ I could feel that riff was something special, it's extremely rewarding to know that it landed well in your ear :D

A great anthem for us all this month! The image of the broken pencils is a great specific detail to build the lyric around. Again struck by the strength of the high range of your voice, especially in those high "Oh"s! Great country swing groove.

The curse of every songwriter...that block or doubt in whether what you've written is any good...yet, you've turned that uncertainty into another class A lyric and song and that my friend, is a sign of a truly gifted songsmith!

@mbmusic

Sounds great! Really nice voice and melody! I like the idea of broken pencils telling a story of the creative journey every artist goes on in an attempt to create a great masterpiece.

Yep you've got it, a we are possibly sone that struggle less than me, love the classic change up. Nice pace changes and pauses. Really good and different.

It’s a hard relate here! The ‘Aaaahhhh, I persevere through time and space’ lines are the highlight for me, both for the melodic punchiness and the message of hope shining out of a mountain of broken pencils. And on that slightly fraught and overblown image I will take my leave…

Oh yeah! Who can't relate? I love this and your vocals are awesome!

@sbs

“But I’ll keep writin, keep on tryin” delivery gives it a country vibe. Pencil is a bit of a metaphor I suppose - what @billwhite51 said. Your lyrics are always spot on with form. No wonder NSAI loves you. They had a field day with my rule breaking - lol!

Yes, very relatable lyric and oh the broken pencils...

Lovely melodic structure, Jerry. Nicely done!

just dont lose your pencil sharpener and you'll make it through okay. every broken pencil deserve a new point. i know these obstacles are present in some way for every writer, even those who write on computers and lose their life's work when their computer crashes. i also know you will keep on writing as long as there is a pencil stub standing, and enough of a voice left to sing with.
