i enjoyed writing a 4-song EP in FAWM week 1. so after a creative drought in week 2 where i hated everything i did, i decided to try it again...

this time i asked 🦙🤖 llama 3.3 (open-source chatgpt alternative) to give me a "roadmap" for a 5-song EP, suggesting BPM, time signature, song structure, chord changes, and which instruments to use in a lo-fi 4-track cassette recording (out of a handful of options i provided).

amazingly, it mostly understood what i was asking 🤯, so i used its output to guide the creation of these 5 songs.

the original AI output is below, but i did take some liberties. i built these up in a passes (track 1 for all songs, then track 2, then 3+4, then mixing). i'll post them as i finish mixing them...

==== SONG-SPECIFIC NOTES ==== the jazzy/waltzy vibe did feel "hazy" so i kinda did draw inspiration from the AI's suggested title. not much more to say about this. flanger, delay, and plate reverb on the guitar, organ is my nord on a vox + leslie setting. i'm not a keyboardist and these are to tape, so don't mock my solos. 😅

==== ORIGINAL LLAMA 3.3 OUTPUT ==== Song 2: "Lost in the Haze" BPM: 90 Time signature: 3/4 Song structure: Intro-Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Outro

Chord progressions: Intro: Em7−G−D Verse: Em7−G−D−A−B7 Chorus: G−D−Em7−A Outro: Em7−G

Track assignments: Track 1: yamaha PSS-480 (backing track) Track 2: electric guitar Track 3: vocals Track 4: organ

Lyrics

don't flatter me hope is a battery with a limited supply the gods of commodity find it an oddity like snowflakes melting in your eye

lost in a haze a lot these latter days

don't waste my time love is a landmine be careful what you step around can we hit restart if whole the world falls apart and silence were the sound?

lost in a haze a lot these latter days lost in a haze allow me to rephrase...

I like the ennui in your vocal. I think you accomplished what you set out to do with this song, that is, a sort of stream of consciousness riff on the title. I especially like the first verse.

@bijou

I like the old school cassette recording and that bass is so rich. I think that is an interesting and cool way to use Ai. This turned out awesomely!

Another super cool song, has a sad dark feeling to it — it felt like the end of the night, 2am, even though I'm listening it during the morning while drinking coffee. The organ sounds amazing, and your 4-track EPs are always inspirational!

I really like how it feels like there are four or five different melodic ideas being shepherded in the song, keeping it an interesting active listen. Maybe it's just a bit basic of me but I was expecting more haze during the chorus, like a fog the song gets lost in? But maybe that is the limitations of four tracks and can be explored in another version? I wish we were a bit braver woth time signitures, maybe some prompts are what we need for next year, I've been trying to get the others to write a song in 5/4 for the past 3 years! I enjoyed the solo, props on using tape too, it's tough to get a take you like and commit, will have to check out the rest of the ep!

The languid bassy part is the through line here. Somewhat off-kilter, yet holding everything together while we stumble through the haze...!

This one and track 3 really stand out on this EP to me. Great sounds on both, I'm impressed that this is all to cassette - as a fellow non-keyboardist I appreciate the pain of playing to tape 😅

I love the "lost in a haze" feel of the lyrics and sounds. @nancyrost pointed out the jam-bandness, and there's a touch of the psychadelic here too. Good stuff!

Ooh, I love the lazy, wobbly nature of this song. Slightly unhinged in a really good way. Very cool lyric and everything fits so well, in a funky fit kind of way. Really enjoyed this one!

I like the jam-band vibe to this one; there's an appealing human looseness and yeah, haziness! I love "allow me to rephrase" at the end.

Another amazing 4-track recording. Feels like a Badalamenti kind of waltz. An intriguing piece of art is what it is. Great job.

I think you're back on it Burr. Smooth vocals and luscious layers of dreamy music.
