i enjoyed writing a 4-song EP in FAWM week 1. so after a creative drought in week 2 where i hated everything i did, i decided to try it again...
this time i asked 🦙🤖 llama 3.3 (open-source chatgpt alternative) to give me a "roadmap" for a 5-song EP, suggesting BPM, time signature, song structure, chord changes, and which instruments to use (out of a handful of options i provided) in a lo-fi 4-track cassette recording.
amazingly, it mostly understood what i was asking 🤯, so i used its output to guide the creation of these 5 songs.
the original AI output is below, but i did take some liberties. i built these up in a passes (track 1 for all songs, then track 2, then 3+4, then mixing). i'll post them as i finish mixing them...
==== SONG-SPECIFIC NOTES ==== for some reason i started singing "when the ghosts in us are gone" instead of the "ghosts of summer" AI title, and it went surprisingly fast from there. lyrics mostly from snippets i've jotted in my phone's notes app over time. i don't drop f-bombs often, but it felt right — so much so i had to re-re-re-do the vocals because i kept choking up at that line. instead of using a whole track for just a glockenspiel solo, i punched that into the vocal track and put percussion on track 4.
==== ORIGINAL LLAMA 3.3 OUTPUT ==== Song 3: "Ghosts of Summer" BPM: 110 Time signature: 4/4 Song structure: Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Outro
Chord progressions: Verse: Fmaj7−C−G−Am−E7 Chorus: C−G−Fmaj7−Am Bridge: Am−Fmaj7−G−C Outro: Fmaj7−C
Track assignments: Track 1: univox sr-55 and bass guitar Track 2: electric guitar Track 3: vocals Track 4: glockenspiel

Lyrics
to be present to the pain without needing to fix it to welcome what remains without feeling fatalistic these wounds we know well this wilderness we trod a journey through hell (and back) is a way to get to god
when the ghosts in us are gone we see the strength in our scars all the maps will be redrawn to point us to the stars like a phoenix from the reliquiae we rise and carry on the past can be a memory when the ghosts in us are gone
take a tome of transgressions and shove back it on a shelf and fuck anyone who's mad at you for taking care of yourself we ride our monsters all the way it's full steam ahead don't slay your demons give them a high five instead

This was a short Fawm for me, and u know I’m missing hearing so many songs, but I’m really glad I got to hear this one. It really hits. Especially about seeing the strength in our scars, and ignoring people who are mad at us for taking care of ourselves. So important.
stunned silence .... blimey I think I need to study the dictionary and thesaurus again I'm humbled by the power in these words, the visuals and the epic final 2 lines. no wonder e'one worships you (heh) I also love how the chorus is said once, giving it more effect, than repeating it too much - like most commercial music.
I like even just the concept of "when the ghosts in us are gone" and I can see why it all came together from that! I really like the lyrics overall here and it's sounding good. Also I love that you did it on a four track cassette and I still want one of those :).
Oh yeah, that guitar is amazing, the bass is killer! And the song has such a nice energy — that chorus is pure poetry, I love it, but the whole lyric is amazing ("give them a high five instead").
My favorite one from the EP so far as well!
woah sr-55!!! i love that machine, it does this song a great favor... keeps time while not being too overwhelming or over-the-top. the words are great, the arpeggiated guitar part and vocal delivery feels very late-2000s indie, and the glockenspiel is very very good - i gotta get my hands on one some time haha. great work!
This one and track 2 were my faves from this EP. The punchy bass works really well with the drum machine. The chorus lyrics in particular hit me, great rhymes and near-rhymes, with the uplifting guitar riff playing nicely off the lyrical themes. Plus a glockenspiel solo? Aw yeah.
These are great lyrics - the strength of self awareness and perseverance. I especially like the line "We see the strength in our scars. . . " Your very catchy melody and rhythm had me moving to the beat. Really great song! Kudos!
Reminds me of the Eels style-wise for some reason. I like how the bass sits in this song and your outro singing. Gonna come back to this one for sure.
My favorite on this EP so far. There's a good lesson in your process, in how you're following the constraints only so far as they're serving you, and saying what you want to say. I appreciate the lyrical ideas, and the sound!
this is so cool! when i heard the beat in the beginning i was expecting a total lofi instrumental type of song. then the vocals and guitar gave it a really nice 90s/early 2000s indie alternative rock kind of vibe, which is some of my favorite stuff. this is so catchy. great lyrics. all around a really top notch track
Nailed it. Great title. Solid lyrics. I had to look up "reliquiae". Rare for me. My only nit is I think it would work better if it was a bit faster. But IMBFoS (my usual discalimer: I May Be Full of S**t).
