Leaving earth to seek other earth-like worlds can be a lonely existence.

Lyrics

Starflight c. 2/21/2025 by Cecilia A. Eng

Our ship is the Wandering Star, Destined to travel near and far Watching the constellations change. There’s no limit to our range, so

CHORUS:
Here we are The Wandering Star On a mission for our kind Though as we go Deep down we know We’ve left Terra far behind.

We’re mapping out our galaxy, On our own and flying free. An Earth-like world is what we seek: A decent size and not too bleak, but (chorus)

We know we’re never going back And leave the beacons on our track Sending messages back home Though ever onward we must roam, saying (chorus)

Someday our signal will prevail. Perhaps they’ll follow on our trail But we will always be alone Exploring outward on our own, so (chorus)

You’ve really expressed how lonely that could feel. We may need new worlds soon; I hope we treat them better than this one..

Melancholic and touching. A really beautiful song.

Excellent, generation ship song!!! And nice variation between verse and chorus! Goes well with the Merchanter theme but different <3

I take it this assumes an Einsteinian universe, with the Wandering Star traveling at near-c? That's really a case of "never going back."

The double meaning in hearing "We’ve left Terra far behind" hits home hard.

I never thought I'd find science fiction tales of starfarers leaving Earth, never to return so seductive, but the more I watch the news these days, the more appealing the idea gets. The aspiration for a life on a planet that's "A decent size and not too bleak" is definitely one I can get behind...
