happy as promised, and a speed record, thank you very much.

i have tried to tell everyone i know about the curse of murfreesboro. People who know, know that Davis Market was the center of the universe, going back to before the first people. there is a curse upon the land that you will remain. the the only way to dispel the curse is to urinate on the geologic marker in the center of everything. i have done so, and i have left. i remember Squid and Worm fondly. they were fringe friends, but the best of the bros. still there to this day.

notes

not much to say. i lived in murfeesboro for eight years, so i can relate strongly. lol. i'm pretty sure that i misspelled the city multiple times in this take but i will eventually learn to spell it for this song alone, but i can say if you sing it correctly it is correct. (drp). i don't near do a good job explaining the curse in the song, but i have these thoughts in my head now and that is worth everything. it warms my heart to write a song about murfreesboro,tn.

This is so, so good. "A beer of jug" paints such a picture of the protagonist that you just know that the ritual is likely to be performed in their imminent future. Whether that leads to their eventual escape is less certain, I feel.

Wow, this is a haunting tale (nice major chord contrast I might add) well sung and delivered. My wife and I stayed at an I-24 hotel one night before we had friends in Nashville. Didn't know how lucky we were or maybe we were at a safe enough distance. I was thinking about stopping to charge there on our next trip and now I am rethinking that notion.

I love the quirkiness of the backstory and the great traditional folk feel! I’ve been to Murfreesboro several times and I now I will see it in a totally different light and here this chorus in my head!

this is a great folk song - i'm a little dry on words tonight so forgive me for not saying too much but i think the stripped back arrangement works perfectly with the melody and your voice. good stuff.

Lee - I’m hoping this is your song for @unknownbecky dream prompt because I want to hear it live. Sometime in the last ten years I discovered the Frees not Fees bit of the spelling even though I’ve been visiting my cousin there for 20 years, so yes I think a song to spell out the name is absolutely necessary. I noticed these other spots where the brilliant was you used pronunciation captured the delicate nature of handing on urban or suburban or even rural legends. Without looking at the lyrics, I’m not sure if it’s the place to pee or the place to be. Also if it’s the center of Tennessee or the Sinner of Tennessee, or if the words alternate. Pour one out or Pull one out. And with each uncertainty the tale shimmers. Similarly I don’t really know if Squid and Worm are people or statues or cartoon characters or figments of the singer’s fevered imagination. I don’t want to look any of it up because this song captures childhood before google for me. What it was like to Believe Grownups without being quite sure what they meant.

@jgale

Okay, this is a legend I need to know more of stat! Loved the song--and love a good folk legend song any day.

thank you for bringing this urban legend from the suburbs of nashville to the general attention of folk outside of the loop. fine job of telling the tale and i want to emphasize that this is not a spin off of some netflix series, but is a true story, one we should all know.
