Brilliant Eyes (for Mei)
by @dhiatt
Liner Notes
I've had this idea kicking around for a while. We adopted a Siamese cat last year who was so incredibly shy she just hid in a box in the bathroom for weeks. She would only be active for short periods at night after things got quiet. I used to hang out with her, waiting for her to get used to me, and when she emerged her blue eyes were startling to behold. So, it's a song about hope and faith that someone can come out of their shell.
I hadn't done an acoustic onetake before, so this seemed like a good candidate. I don't practice playing and singing at the same time often, so it's humbling to record my fumblings (hey, good rhyme). But here it is, in the spirit of FAWM (take that @timfatchen 😛 ).

Mei's doing well, by the way. :)
Lyrics
Spent the nighttime hours waiting Just to catch a glimpse And I shiver to think of you Huddled in the darkness
Life outside’s the great unknown And it’s safer in the dark The worlds a scary place We don’t have to go far
But I know that day is comin’ When you blow us all away Don’t feel the pressure Doesn’t have to be today But underneath the moonlit skies You’ll dazzle us all With your brilliant eyes
When you came to us You were too shy lift your head Darling it ain’t a crime To never leave your bed
We only get glimpses Just a whisper of you Just a hint of smile Is what gets us through
Have to remind myself To take it day by day I know it isn’t easy To hide your cares away
But now I know that day is comin’ When you blow us all away Don’t feel the pressure Doesn’t have to be today But underneath the moonlit skies You’ll dazzle us all With your brilliant eyes

This is a lovely, gentle acoustic song. I'm a real cat fan, but it would believe it was about a child if I didn't know. Hope this isn't the only acoustic song you write!
This is a nice, gentle, tribute to her. I think just you and the guitar really brings out that you're talking to her and the tone shows that you're being soothing to her so that you make her feel at ease. We went through the same with our Pomeranian, Tom, who was abandonded on a cold November night. He was with us for 8 terrific years, but we had to put him down on a cold December night. You're doing the right thing. Keep writing for (and because of ) her. She's your guardian angel.
Love this song!!! I really enjoyed the fingerpickin and great vocal!! Cool lyric too..I love my cat more than most peoples!! Love youll dazzle us all with your brilliant eyes.... Super line!! stuck in my head now!! You're a gift to FAWM..so glad you joined!!!
This is so sweet, and what a loving tribute to a sweet pet. You're playing and singing are quite nice, so keep practicing those acoustic one takes!
I read the liner notes after I heard the song. It is so mysterious without it. And the story is beautyfull. I pictured a baby for some reasons. "Have to remind myself / To take it day by day" has a whole different meaning then. But it's still about being up to the job. Love and care make the world a place worth living in. Oh, and songs of course !
Ah, this is brilliantly sweet and tender, pretty damned good for one take! Mei is lucky to have such caring owners, thanks for this, it's left me feeling all warm and fuzzy...
Reminds me of my rescue, Ripley. She was very timid. Often wouldn't even come in the room if we were in there. This is such a kind, beautiful song that just resonates with the love you have for her.
