Eat That Lotus

Liner Notes
I've been wanting to make an #Italo track ever since my first FAWM in 2022 and I finally got around to it. This is built around a MicroFreak patch that I made that year called Ital-Oh, plus some preset patches that I wrote simple melody sequences for. Drums are GarageBand drums plus a snare preset that was also on the MicroFreak, and nothing is synced because GarageBand doesn't offer sync out in any form as far as I know. Back in the heyday of Italo, MIDI was either brand new or not invented yet, so arguably, just timing the tracks by listening to the click and trying to hit Start at the right time adds to the authenticity. Arguably. Of course, the ability to cut and paste in a DAW and micro-adjust things section by section didn't exist back then so the producers of that era had to get that right on the take, but you know, sucks to be you, I guess.
Lyrically, I tried, in my own way, to write about something I don't like, in a way that evokes the hedonism of the genre. That was a fun exercise.
Melodically, I was bugged by the nagging thought that I was copying the tune of an existing 1990s pop song, but luckily, having the voice that I have was an advantage in this case and I think at this point, no one will be able to even tell what song I had in mind.
Food preparation is SFW, right?
Lyrics
Eat That Lotus
Verse It’s the sweet, sweet smell of easy success And you don’t have to know anything All the answers are wrong but they look like they’re right And they have a familiar ring
Perfection in mediocrity Exactly what you expect – and no more The words do rhyme and the pictures shine But its bar is on the floor.
Chorus So come on , take another bite It’s everywhere and it’s such a delight Eat that lotus, it’ll be all right You need some joy when the living is tight
When the living is tight When the living is tight…
It looks like the future but it’s really the past Remixed all over again Let the planet burn and the workforce churn And stripmine the public domain
If I had the skills and the time to match You can bet your life I would use it But it’s 2025 and we’re all gonna die So it’s not so bad if I lose it
Keep eating that lotus Keep plucking that chicken…

"Eat that lotus" is a fantastic hook, and this whole thing is such a bop. "But it’s 2025 and we’re all gonna die" – I love it hahaha.
@jinx lines like that one are what points the way to a possible revision of the song that is more coherent and universal, while also being more danceable. The lines that work formally are the ones that are on-beat in the first half of each line, so any that aren't need to be rewritten. And it turns out that the actual focus of interest is 'hedonism in the face of our inevitable and brutal demise', which is what a lot of Italo and similar music was all about anyway.
