Peace the Wallflower

Skirmish: Peace (@ajna1960)Liner Notes
Sunday 23rd: This morning I clicked on Amanda's Euro-friendly skirmish right when it was ending. Oh well. So I sat down and wrote these words in two 20-30 minute sessions. The first session was jotting down random ideas - as you do. The second was singing them until a theme emerged, and then organising them into some kind of coherence. What emerged was the idea that peace is the best choice, but war is more exciting. I think that I had in the back of my mind a quote from Psalm 120: "I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war!" Also thinking about the concept of Shalom: wholeness, rather than just the absence of conflict.
Monday 24th: wrote and recorded the music. Finally got out the mandolin. Mr. Collie sang along for about 10 minutes while I practiced, and then got bored and fell asleep.
Lyrics
(Prelude verse) Peace - it has no budget You can’t get it paying more There’s no profit in it It’s not for sale in any store We’ve got guns for all occasions But unsure what peace is for Does it stir and thrill us? Or is it just absence of war?
(Verse 1) If peace was a young kid on a high school dance floor She’d be the wallflower that the cool kids ignore They’d say she was clever and good to the core But too sweet for the classroom And a bit of a bore.
(Chorus) We sing Peace Like a River But dear God, don’t let it pour We sing Peace Like an Ocean But we’re still here on the shore. Yet we dream about it, So let’s reckon up the score: If peace is what we're after Why do we love war?
(Verse 2) If peace was a vinyl record It would be solo piano, quiet The critics would all praise it But nobody would buy it. They’d say the sound is flawless And the playing is top drawer But too downbeat for parties And a bit of a snore.
(Chorus)

i feel this ironic, but there is also a lot of unfortunate truth in it. look at the terrible junk people watch on netflix and in movie theatres. nothing but murder and revenges..nonstop action and blood spurting everywhere. domestic dramas are too slow and romantic comedies are more about hooking up thn falling in love. people dont want peace, they just want to be left alone. they want war. but not in their block...just beamed in from somewhere else.
I really like how this has a jolly Christmas feel to it, but the lyrics are punch in the gut powerful. Fantastic chorus, especially the question at the end.
PS WE don't love war - only the power hungry love it - sadly, they can order ordinary people to fight their battles for them.
Oh and I completely forgot to mention how much I love the wallflower analogy! That is really a brilliant take that raises this song up above the rest!
Oh my goodness Jon, this is far and away the most beautiful song I've heard this FAWM (and prolly in a long time before!) You've reached right into my heart and touched me in a way that rarely happens with a "mere" song! Perhaps that's because this is no "mere" song! This is truly beautiful to listen to even before one listens closely to the lyrics! Your music and your vocals are lovely and quite a treat for the ears. But on a closer listen, your lyrics are a treat for the brain! And taken together, this song is a special treat for the heart!
You lay out some cold, hard facts that are sad but somehow you manage to leave me hopeful. I guess maybe I feel that the beauty of your music and the honesty of your words might just reach more people than would the sarcasm and hateful things I wish to shove at them!
Although I am not a fan of organized religion I am most certainly a fan of most of the work of Jesus! And I have a favorite song written by Leon Russell, as performed by New Grass Revival, called Prince of Peace. That song has always touched and moved me. Your song touches and moves me too!
Thank you!
OK. Back for the music side of things and I really love what you've done here musically A LOT.
I love the musical run! Very clever way of saying so much! Your gentle protests are so good John. Lovely mandolin as well
Wow, this piece truly moved me. It gripped me from the very beginning and stirred something deep inside. Every line sparked new thoughts, making me pause and reflect on ideas I hadn’t considered before.
There’s a raw honesty woven through the lyrics that doesn’t just speak about peace and war—it challenges the way we perceive them. The contrast between the allure of conflict and the quiet presence of peace left me reflecting on how easily we overlook what’s truly valuable.
It’s not just a song—it’s a thought-provoking journey that lingers long after reading. Thank you for sharing something so powerful and beautifully unsettling.
Please ping me with music when you have it. I really appreciate this lyric.
I really love what you've done here. This is one of those songs that I think, wow, I would never have thought of it this way, but now that I'm hearing it, it's true and makes perfect sense. Why do we love war? Because the people who make those decisions to start a war are greedy and self-serving, and, unfortunately, never the ones to suffer. Nice rhymes, especially quiet and buy it. The sweetness of the melody and the mandolin is wonderful, and such an interesting contrast to the actual impact of the lyrics.
