Nothing Ever Lasts

Liner Notes
A song of loss of love from that old romantic @crisp1. went for a classic Celtic feel for this one, back to my roots.

Doug: I'm super glad you grabbed this and went back to your roots with it, @daveyboy103! The steady heartbeat drum and the bittersweet Celtic vibe work superbly. I'd count this among our best collabs and am chuffed to finish off FAWM with this. Thank you, sir!
Lyrics
V1 In a dark, quiet room Sifting through Illusions of my past So much of it feels present And yet I know Nothing ever lasts
V2 I’m so far away from you Wishing time Could fly by more than fast I need to feel your touch again Because I know Nothing ever lasts
Except your love
Chorus Your love is waking at daylight The warmth of your body Next to mine Your love is sitting facing me Knowing what I’m thinking Almost all the time Your love is giving in to compromise You count on me to do the same for you And when my days are troubled Your love is what will see me through
V3 Winter morning on the shore Holding you Beneath the overcast I’m clinging to this moment Because I know Nothing ever lasts
Except your love
Chorus Your love is waking at daylight The warmth of your body Next to mine Your love is sitting facing me Knowing what I’m thinking Almost all the time Your love is giving in to compromise You count on me to do the same for you And when my days are troubled Your love is what will see me through
Bridge You look at me Out of your thoughts And then reach out your hand
You speak to me Without a word And still I understand
(Instrumental)
Chorus Your love is waking at daylight The warmth of your body Next to mine Your love is sitting facing me Knowing what I’m thinking Almost all the time Your love is giving in to compromise You count on me to do the same for you And when my days are troubled Your love is what will see me through

This mournful melody is perfect for these lyrics! The element of time is sprinkled in so many ways through the song. Love the sentiment of the chorus, and that it doesn't feel like platitude because of the specifics and the compromise.
@billwhite51 Thanks for the feedback, not really happy with the vocal production on this, I may revisit
@crisp1. is certainly an old romantic, and so is @daveyboy103, who inhabits these lyrics with an equal passion. i like the way the song begins with the negative cynicism that believes "nothing ever lasts" but upon reaching the chorus experiences an emotional turnaround with its intense proclamation that love will, indeed, see us through troubled times.
Loving this collaboration. Really nice production. That chorus melody is good, too.
@timfatchen @erubenst Well spotted there was no de-esser on this. I sometimes add a "Telephone voice" track , same as the main vocal which helps it to cut through
Like sinking into a luscious [bed? chocolate bath? lover? alloftheabove?] And the positive vibe from the love shines through. And that viola/fiddle is a gorgeous touch. [tech note yes, de-ess. Then the vocal will float over and through the lush backing] Magic to listen too. Congrats both!
@erubenst Thanks for the feedback, will look at the deesser
I really like the pace and feel of this song. The string line really adds a nice element to it-- reminds me of a band that used to be called Mandolin Orange (now, Watchhouse, I think). If I could make a minor production suggestion-- a de-esser and noise gate on the vocals would help them pop out a bit more clearly, I think. Really enjoyable listen!
Such thoughtful, grown-up romance just soaked into Doug's lyrics here. Wonderful choice to go power ballad with it and the melody turned out gorgeous. Really fine arrangement that will only get better with a little more mix tweaking. Well played to both you guys.
