My First Love (Ode to Pushkin)

Skirmish: Cats (@ajna1960)Liner Notes
I was just thinking "I haven't written a cat song yet this FAWM" and lo and behold, the theme of this skirmish was #cats - how "purrfect" 😽
Ended up writing an ode to my first feline love named Pushkin, a feisty and adventurous and thoroughly lovable striped kitty who stole my heart at the tender age of 5, and then broke it when he went out for one of his adventures and never returned when I was only 11.
Recorded in #onetake in my office on my iPhone since I'm at work and don't have access to recording software (maybe I'll re-record later).
Lyrics
My First Love (Ode to Pushkin) by Rachel Eve - Feb 26 2025
I was five, you were of an undetermined age When I found you under the neighbor's tree You were shy, didn’t let me touch you right away So I wrote you a letter in red crayon, “I hope you’ll stay”
Oh Pushkin, you were my best friend You were the star of all my third grade journals Oh Pushkin, too few years we had together But I’ll always remember Your stripes and jowls and wanderin’ howls And how you caught the bird that time And left it like a prize on the back stoop The way you’d let me pick you up Your fur a cushion for the love I’ll always feel for you Can you feel it too? Oh Pushkin…
You were mine for a time, but the great outdoors Always pulled you away from our home You’d return, full of burrs, smelling like the cold Til the day you did not, had to let you go
Oh Pushkin, you were my best friend You were the star of all my third grade journals Oh Pushkin, too few years we had together But I’ll always remember Your stripes and jowls and wanderin’ howls And how you caught the bird that time And left it like a prize on the back stoop The day you’d let me pick you up Your fur a cushion for the love I’ll always feel for you
I like to think of you sometimes Doing strange leaps in the clouds You’re running free and running wild Can you hear me singing out?
Oh Pushkin, you were my best friend You were the star of all my third grade journals Oh Pushkin, too few years we had together But I’ll always remember Your stripes and jowls and wanderin’ howls And how you caught the bird that time And left it like a prize on the back stoop The way you’d let me pick you up Your fur a cushion for the love I’ll always feel for you Can you feel it too? Oh Pushkin…

Oh I fell in totally in love with Pushkin as I listened to this song! Such a lovely tribute to a furry feline friend. The juxtaposition of the sweetness of a child for this cat they found and with its murderous bird killing acts is perfectly conveyed in the lyric and so gorgeously delivered. Makes me think back to all of the cats that were such a big part of my life journey. Lovely song!
Sweet loving song, singing and playing. So wonderful to listen to. Beautiful take on the prompt.
The way some of your words hang (e.g. "jour-nals") is really pleasing. What a great hook! What a touching sentiment without being too maudlin. Difficult task, Great job.
This was quite emotional for me. I thought of writing about my first cat who had a name that's a little similar - Pumpkin. We found him (at Halloween) in a pile of fire wood up by our house's side gate. He used to climb up onto my top bunk to sleep beside me. And like your Pushkin we had him for too short a time. Lovely song!
Awww. How priceless! I just love everything about this! Beautiful!
This is such a gorgeous ode to a beloved pet. I love how your voice flows so seamlessly with the lyrics and music. I felt tugs on my heart listening - especially on that emotive chorus. Nice stop time strums on that last one.
Awww this is so sweet and full of love. Beautifully sung and the sparse-ish accompaniment leaves the emphasis on the words, which works really well.
This is such a beautiful portrait of the close observing third grader who will grow up to be a songwriter who can wrap the external sights and sounds of life around the big feelings inside. Beautiful writing and singing and loving.
