Every (new) Country Song You've Ever Heard

Liner Notes
#country #humor I like country music, really. But at some point "three chords and the truth" became four chords and forget the truth part. Anyway, there are hundreds of hits that use this chord progression--and these images. Special thanks to Florida-Georgia Line for the inspiration.

Every (new) Country Song You’ve Ever Heard © Mark Greenberg February 26, 2025
V1 Cruising down the road, roll my windows down Got some cold ones in the back as we head out of town My gal’s looking cute in her baseball cap With her blond ponytail laced out the back Won’t you tell me, have you ever heard this song before? V2 Got my brand new jeans with the ripped out knees Spotless work boots on my feet Sporting my favorite faded shirt The one that never ever seen a day of work Won’t you tell me, have you ever heard this song before? PRE-CHORUS Now comes the time to sing the pre-chorus Cause that’s what the pros in Nashville taught us CHORUS We start with the Tonic, gonna make it a G Then a Dominant Fifth, that’d be D Minor Seven then go to the end With a Four Chord C and do it over again (repeat) Won’t you tell me, have you ever heard this song before? V3 My friends got a boat, I got a girl Seems like I’m living in a country song world Let’s turn up the tunes and head to the shore Tell me, have you ever heard this song before? CHORUS We start with the Tonic, gonna make it a G Then a Dominant Fifth, that’d be D Minor Seven then go to the end With a Four Chord C and do it over again Won’t you tell me, have you ever heard this song before? V4 It’s every country song that you’ve ever heard Just play the chords and plug in some words Hey Bro, it’s a sound we all adore Tell me, have you ever heard this song before? Won’t you tell me, have you ever heard this song before?

So clever Mark! Very meta. Great writing here. I really like the repeating line...and you could have even faded it more times!
I think you've cracked the code! Really clever and well done.
Well done! Fun and clever, and so true. I like the change from generic story lines in the verses to the literal play-by-play in the chorus and pre-chorus.
Ha! I've definitely heard this song before! Amazing how you made it so sarcastic but so catchy at the same time. I'll have this one in my head for a while.
This is such fun Mark! That chorus is precious - humming it my head now over and over. Also perfect is: "just play the chords and plug in some words"- sort of like what i've had to tell myself a lot lately.
The repeated line at the end of each of the first verses is a great touch! Your usual subtle humor comes through well, specially with the chorus 'explanation'!
That chorus is brilliant, if not familiar! 😀 I'm thinking I forgot how well you structure narratives. A good country listen, indeed.
hmmm I think maybe I HAVE heard this song before! maybe 10 years ago or so peak bro country someone stitched together all the hits of the time... it really is all the same. but that chord progression manages to hit even when it's recycling the same ideas. very clever idea you had hear and a great write
I especially like those spotless work boots. And the Nashville paint by numbers prechorus and chorus. And still you’ve got me singing along. And I want to go steal that chorus chord progression. The Amish kids who worked on fixing up out porch and barn told me that Florida Georgia Line was their favorite group. Maybe I can write a song about Sunglasses and Strawhats and a hired driver.
