All My Friends

Liner Notes

I was talking with my friend Scott the other night, and he was telling me about the things he values in the people he wants in his life. Basically, his thought was that just being smart isn't enough. Intelligence can lead to some pretty dangerous places if it isn't combined with other qualities. His trifecta was: smart, open-hearted, and silly. I really liked those ideas, and they inspired this song! I wanted to give it a bit of a 1920s feel. I'm not sure it ended up there exactly, but I like how it came out.

This is my first non-protest song of this year's FAWM, so everyone clap! Of course, looked at in another way, it could be a bit of a protest-ish song...but still!

Lyrics

Verse 1 Let me introduce you to my friend John. He can always put his finger on The funniest words and the best song To cheer me up when it gets long. (My face...when my FACE gets long.) Have you met my friend Louise? She's the one who really sees All my better qualities And helps me when I'm on my knees. (Metaphorically speaking - get your minds out of the gutter!)

Chorus All my friends are silly, And that's a very good thing. You'll catch them dancing in the grocery store. (If there's music playing.) And all my friends have open hearts, And that's a beautiful thing. You'll find them doing kind deeds galore. So let's turn the world into one big dance floor.

Verse 2 Let me tell you 'bout my pal Joe. He's the one who really knows All the bestest places to go To cut a rug or to see a show. (Not that kind of show - geez!) Let's not forget dear, sweet Marie Who showed me how much fun life can be Even when I'm folding laun-d-ry Or doing my taxes or taking a pee. (OK, I'll give you that one.)

Chorus All my friends are silly, And that's a very good thing. You'll catch them dancing in the grocery store. (OK, there doesn't need to be music.) And all my friends have open hearts, And that's a beautiful thing. You'll find them doing kind deeds galore. So let's turn the world into one big dance floor.

Bridge Imagine how much better the world could be If it were more like my friends and me. Instead of chasing profits, We could point out where it's off its Rocker. Intelligence devoid of any heart and joy Can lead to harm with the methods it employs. Add some silly to your smarts, though, And you'll see the world will start to Come together, not apart, so Please take these words to heart, yo, And watch all the good things grow.

Chorus All my friends are silly, And that's a very good thing. You'll catch them dancing in the grocery store. (Come on and join us!) And all my friends have open hearts, And that's a beautiful thing. You'll find them doing kind deeds galore. So let's turn the world into one big dance floor.

Fabulous performance. I do love how you manage to combine the serious and comical. We need to be able to laugh right now more than ever. Thank you, Dave!

This was SO much fun! I was reading the lyrics while listening, but I had to keep scrolling up to see your expressions during the spoken word parts. Too funny! We definitely need more silliness to stay sane in the current climate.

This is great! I love how the melody keeps rising and your intense rhyming in the verses (and the spoken asides). I want to hang out with your friends!

That tippy toes part increasing speed is fun, and the spoken off the cuffish remarks to slow down the climb....Nice too, to call out friends by name, and remember that friends make the world go round. I wanted one more verse that speaks directly to me, and tells me I'm great, if a little bit too prone to have my mind in the gutter.

The spoken parts are great—really charming and fun. I like how the melody climbs with the chords, gives it a nice lift. Great job of capturing the joy of friendship and the little moments that make people special!
