nobody was sleeping

Liner Notes

I think if I'd written this song earlier in the month, I would've spent a few days working on a fuller arrangement but a scratch demo will have to suffice for now - don't worry, I've still included some unhinged madness.

I've just noticed that I drifted into the wrong tense in the last verse, so I'll fix that when I come back to this.

#noir #one-take-ish #tremelo

Lyrics

nobody was sleeping nobody at all the neighbour's curtains drawn tight their families all safe inside how could they not know?

nobody left breathing nobody at all they came in the dead of night jackboots echo outside the home, the home we shared

nobody was helping nobody at all they all stood idly by guiltily averted their eyes praying they weren't next

we were pulled apart like a concertina insurmountable the distance between us

nobody was sleeping nobody at all they're all wide awake why didn't they come to our aid? why didn't they help us escape? nobody at all

Your vocals are really masterful on this! Great control of your vast range and with so much emotion conveyed! It's haunting!! in a way that should make us stand alert to what we need to/can do to help!

you cant beat a minor key murder blues played on tremelo guitar with a spooky vocal and even spookier effects. makes me think of august 8, 1969.

Oh wow, this is stripped-back in the most compelling and effective way - makes me want to lean closer to the speakers to not miss a whisper.

Wow, what a haunting and prescient lyric. The tremolo and the gentle vocal performance set such a dark tone and mood. The synth garble at ~2:00 that just cuts off to go back to the verse is too good.

Ooooh, this simple tremelo guitar is the PERFECT accompaniment to the melody here. I absolutely love the synths that come in after the second verse. This feels like it belongs in a Tarantino movie or something.

Chills. Incredibly haunting. Delightfully disturbing. I was almost done listening for the night. Glad I dropped by. Absolutely loved this.

I guess "they're" could be short for "they were" technically couldn't it, or am I stretching? I'm big into my tremolo right now and I love your use of it here. The synth that creeps in at the 2 minute mark is a cool textural touch. The concertina simile is great. I'm kinda wondering about when this song is meant to be set, and the fact that it's not clear worries me.
