It Doesn't Get Better Than This

Liner Notes

This is co-write with my friend Cory. We've known each since we met back in the days when we were both hopping from coffeehouse to coffeehouse playing our songs and shared the night a few times too. Always a pleasure.

Cory sent me a title phrase and I wrote a set of lyrics and sent back. He did a couple sketches and I sent back some feedback... and he revised, reduced, rewrote some lyrics, etc etc... and here we go.

Just a phone voice memo of Cory playing and singing for now.

Lyrics

It Doesn't Get Better Than This By Cory Glover & Dan Vaillancourt

You pull your hair up When we run late It’s a quarter til’ We try to leave at eight I hear the sound of those little feet Down the hallway, keep it on repeat

CHORUS: And we dreamt of perfection When we were young So bright-eyed, but near-sighted Now we take is as it comes and never forget It doesn’t it get better than this It doesn’t it get better than this, darling

We’re sick again But we still stay up too late I’ll take the first shift After bets are placed Made it through the day, barely In my arms, sleeping I’ll always carry

Bridge: Some days we’re heroes With no regrets The sun rises and sets We hit reset

This is great and I love the co-writing process that you describe. I love the acoustic delivery - it feel like an intimate concert setting. It’s a lovely hook and the verses develop the warmth of the sentiment so well. Wonderful insight and reflection and great guitar and vocals.

classic acoustic sounds - well sung, well played! great dynamics indeed. could be a little more fleshed out lyrically if you like, but the title is strong enough to carry the song even like this. good one!

Nice song and great for you to write with your friend. Cory has a great emotive voice. It would be nice to see this developed further and have some harmonies between the two of you.

Thanks again for your kind comments on Sell The Difference.

Well, that's two-for-two on great results finding your old musical buddies -- so here's to doing more of that! This is a great co-write and performance. The guitar walkdown after "doesn't get better than this" really sets the hook. I think there's some internal rhymes you could lean on in the phrasing in a few places, but this is really strong -- beautifully resigned ode to parenting and growing together.

Beautifully played, sung and written. I like the dynamics in the performance, which adds to the emotion. The lyrics ring very true. Instead of striving for perfection and focussing on what is missing, people often lose sight of what they have.

Nice mellow country rock song - the simplicity of the recording adds to the overall feel.

If that's a voice memo I don't want to know how the studio version sounds. Such a good performance

Dang! What a voice and only on a phone? Love this line: So bright-eyed, but near-sighted. This is a gem that needs to live beyond this page. Please!!

I love the strength of those captured moments. Both so tangible and somewhat blurry, with room for interpretation. And how it can contain some deep secret on life, purpose, happiness and all the rest. I like the ideas that come back with different meaning : chiaroscuro (sun rises and sets, up too late, bright-eyed & near-sighted) echoes (keep it on repeat, hit reset, again) and bedtime (dreamt, stay up, sleeping). The simple voice and guitar fits nicely and underlines the ideas of sleepyness and half-day.

Wonderfully reflective lyrics. The simple phone recording matches them perfectly.

Thanks for kickstarting this collab! Had a great time puzzling this one together.

So much that's great about THIS. The open tuning leans into the epicness of the emotion. It's all about the path. The path is sometimes one that you never imagine you'd be on but it can be magical and rewarding in ways you can never imagine - especially when you have someone special to share it with. Cory's got an amazing voice and a keen ear for melody. Along with your eye for detail, Dan, this song was bound to be great. You both 🤘 !
