The Refrigerator Of Souls

Liner Notes

I'm flexing my #soundDesign muscles a bit today with Korg Wavestate, Heavyocity Damage 2, and lots of #WarrGuitar.

This one is inspired by Jeff VanderMeer's latest novel in the Southern Reach sequence, "Absolution".

Lyrics

Hefty alligator Hundred fingers in a bowling ball How much for the faculty? Hunted down and died

Nothing happened later (Nothing very much at all) Nothing what it seems to be Nothing left inside

Sitting at a standoff Stealing from those more deprived Selling tape recorders Screaming bunny hugs

Running with the lights off Running fast to catch the tide Running for the border Running out of drugs

Some wild imagery here, hundred fingers in a bowling ball, big alligator; very abstract and odd feeling. Music gives a pumping up for war vibe. The spoken vocal lends to an ominous and dangerous vibe.

Ha, right from the start this was rattling things in my car. I'm not really sure what the first two stanzas are actually about, but they were filling me with chills and dread LOL. This feels like am 80s horror movie and I love it. I love the treatment of the spoken voice here.

@bijou

Yes a really cool sound design! I think the spoken word works really well and adds so much depth to an already interesting track!

@arcane

Such a dramatic intro didn't prepare me for the more hopeful vibe that comes afterwards. I am getting a cyberpunk movie soundtrack feel, and envision a character who is so determined that nothing can stop him. Awesome sounds, and of course, the guitar is excellent!

@edwinb

Well this is sounding very big indeed. Bonus points for the rhyme scheme and especially rhyming "bunny hugs" with "drugs"

Getting some Hans Zimmer vibes with the composition. And when your voice comes in, it totally made me jump. The "Sitting at a standoff" line feels like the essence of the song. Epically lovely! ANNND thank you for all you did for FAWM!

This is epic! It's giving me action sequences in my head, which is always a good thing. The lyrics are disquieting and your delivery makes them even more so. It all works so well! Awesome sound design too, love the textures in a lot of the sounds. I've had this series on my reading list for awhile, this makes me want to pick it up ASAP! Phenomenal composition!

Epic build-up to the point where the vocals start. Then the vocals gives a bit different but fitting direction. This is a masterpiece!

@leencha

Wow!!! This is great! The build up at first, the instrumentation, arrangement and producing. The voice that comes in, quite unexpectadly… Sound like from a movie scene. Very filmish. Unexpected brusk end, wanting for more… Really enjoyed this! Well done!!!

@hmorg

Very nice sound design, there's a cool spacey feeling throughout. I agree with @heliosonorous that the voice fits well like a warning.

Cool sound layers and the percussion is well done, the sticks stand out well in adding to it all, voice in here fits well like a warning.

This is indeed some pretty epic sound design! Love that sort of explosion fx that closes the instrumental opening. Then how dry you've got the vocal, so it really sits at the front of the mix and contrasts with the more ambient, spacey synth textures. You also can't really argue with a title like "The Refrigerator Of Souls", or lines like "Hefty alligator / Hundred fingers in a bowling ball". Great track!
