She Likes The Sad Ones Best

Liner Notes

#altcountry #fingerpicking #dropDtuning

I played my wife "Yellowknife" and her response was "I like your sad ones the best."

Duly noted. That said, this is not about her - she likes the funny ones, too.

Musically, this feels like the kind of songs I played steel on in alt-country bands around New York in the 90s, and it was hard to steer clear of that Lucinda Williams song the chords remind me of.

I wish I'd nailed the phrasing at the end of the second verse, but what can you do? And I just realized, as I write this, I should have used "Leonard Cohen" instead of "Nebraska-era Springsteen" anyway, so that's an easy fix going forward.

Drop D tuning, my second complete take, on a Martin 00-18 with a third string that has seriously unraveling issues.

Lyrics

She’ll listen to the rest But she likes the sad ones best It’s always been that way I never knew what to say

So don’t bother putting on Anything by Mose Allison She says if it's all the same She’d rather hear Elmore James

It’s not my problem now But I’m telling you anyhow If you want her to say yes She likes the sad ones best

She likes to feel the weight Of the world when its served up straight She’s got no use for clever rhymes If it’s not about hard times

You won’t get anywhere Without plenty of despair Nebraska-era Springsteen and Almost anything by Townes Van Zandt

Ch.

She’ll listen to it all But the ones about alcohol Heartbreak and love gone wrong Those are still her favorite songs

So don’t try to play it smart Cole Porter or Lorenz Hart If nobody’s crying in their beer It’s not what she wants to hear

This is right up my alley - very drive by truckers, but with a much more enjoyable voice, haha! Very catchy, very fun, great playing.

after the liner notes, the first chorus was a shocking twist :) fittingly sprightly tune, now that she's not your problem anymore, and great promenades along those double and triple stops... i'll go cry in my beer now.

I love this @hamiltonpoolhall. Needless to say, your technique of throwing in all those musicians is very Cole Porter of you.

Wouldn't work with my wife. We used to dance in the kitchen to "Cheek to Cheek." And, yes, I've already used that line in a song. Play it for you sometime.

Of course, now I have to go listen to "Yellowknife." Damn you.

This groove is effervescent! Just bursting out of its own skin. And it’s a great hook, I bet you smiled when that landed in your lap. Your lyric are alway rich and clever. Bravo!!

Gretchen Peters used to have merch that said "sad songs make me happy." I agree with her. This is witty and charming, a happy song about sad songs. Whoa. Springsteen or Cohen, I love that you set up the Townes rhyme with "and."

There's a Leo Kottke vibe to the opening guitar figure that I dig, especially since it's on only 6 strings 😂

So glad to you posted another…And what a lovely one at that. Gotta love the inspiration for the song. Man, you gotta way with words. Combined with your playing and singing, just a killer combo. The guitar motif that starts the song and comes after the choruses is just perfect. It’s like sipping fine wine in between bites of a gourmet meal. I like the dynamic change you make during the last verse.

On a side note, being a subscriber to your emailed newsletter, I quite enjoyed reading the email I received today. You expressed such a healthy and heartfelt perspective about FAWM and keeping things fun. That really resonated with me and it left me inspired. I couldn’t partake in FAWM the way I wanted to this year but your words have me yearning for more next time around. Thanks for that…

My wife can't stand my sad songs. Actually she can't stand most of my songs 🤔 . Anywaaaaay. This has a really fun upbeat energy (which I presume is very deliberate?) with the nimble picking and the subtle hand claps. The central 'She likes the sad ones best' is a wonderfully catchy alt-folk hook. Could really see this one working for you live. I also feel like Nebraska-era Springsteen is pretty strong in this context (I think you'd probably have to specify the era for Cohen anyway, right? He did some pretty fun stuff in the 80s, or is that just me misremembering?!). In fact all the little nods to other artists work really well. Another great tune.
