Crossing the Finish Line

Skirmish: The Finish Line (@robinleaf)Liner Notes
#skirmish #singersongwriter #guywithguitar #folk #meta February - the shortest month, and often the grayest and snowiest. And this particular February has been full of delightful surprises as well as cringe-worthy moments - the former on FAWM, the latter as reported by main stream media. I'm grateful to FAWM (and to FAWMers) for the welcome distraction. Well, we're about to cross the finish line in less than 15 hours now, so this may be my last post for 2025 - though there is one collaboration out there waiting on an OK to post. Cheers, everyone. It's been a fun month, and congratulations on crossing your personal finish line, wherever that might be.
Lyrics
CROSSING THE FINISH LINE (c) 2025 raspberry33
VERSE 1: We’ve been driving this car for nearly a month Though it feels more like forever Crossing rivers and mountains and desert flats Throw your hands up, or whatever
Lyrical prompts and musical romps And new friends in every skirmish Juggling demands and putting off plans Posting like a whirling dervish
CHORUS: How many ways can you bare your soul? How many words can you combine? I’m going to post that last song tonight As you cross the finish line?
VERSE 2: Dust clouds should be kicked up out on the road Not from moving around in my studio All those times that I’ve been told I could have stayed back in the shadows
The weather is starting to warm up a bit As the sunset time grows later But I’m determined to do one more song For the next one will be greater CHORUS:
VERSE 3: Farewell to FAWM, I’m exhausted, but feeling fine The sprint’s almost over, the ribbon’s right there Across that finish line
OUTRO: Goodbye to FAWM – see you next year!

My fawm month was actually the last 6 days, so I certainly get the whirling dervish reference (I actually saw the real dervishes once, but that's another story!) This flows along beautifully and I love all of the spot on fawm references. Haven't been able to bring myself to admit it's over in just a few hours, so no fawm farewell from me yet, but I thoroughly enjoyed yours!
Very beautiful, relatable song. Such a gorgeous take, sincere, passionate, beautiful and gorgeous. Love your lyrics, music, vocals, instrumental part and the solo part. So warm and inspiring. Musical theatre vibes which are so wonderful to feel. Thank you so much for your beautiful song, you've brightened my evening (no, it is actually night).
Thanks, John. I have to say I was blown away by your contribution to this skirmish. I just got back from a post-skirmish walk, and your tune was playing over and over in my head.
Lovely acoustic folk tune! And then...some synth! Yay!!! Love your vocals quite a lot! Beautiful lyrics and I'm trying to write more today! Great skirmishing!
Great track! I love any tune that can use "whirling dervish" :) Congrats on a great FAWM. I really love the little synth line hidden back there.
Drop D tuning, but capo'd up to E. And stealing an old Neil Young trick of sliding up the G (now A) and B (now C) strings. The synth patch is Screamlead in GarageBand, but tweaked with a bit more portamento. So, it's a nod to two of my favorite artists: Neil and Keith Emerson. Being lazy, I set up a template and used the same instrumentation for several skirmishes this year. And yes, it's very literal, very #meta. I wasted 10 minutes starting on another political diatribe after watching the White House attempt to humiliate Zelenskyy today but I'm guessing he'll cross his finish line with or without help from the oligarchy.
A splendid write, as I've come to expect from you and I have to say I agree with all these sentiments, I've grown so thankful to FAWM over the 5 years I've been doing it. Loving those chords - is it an open tuning? And the synth is an added cherry on the cake, bizarrely reminded me of The Rockford Files 😂
Such a great musical theatre type setting - I love what you've done here. It's very literal with FAWM, but I like exploring this theme! FAWM really means that much to me, too! Well done, and congratulations!
What a great way to describe the quest that is FAWM. I'm smiling as I'm listening and feeling warm and grateful to be a part of this wonderful community. This is a wonderfully easy-listening melody and message. Really great song.
