Liner Notes

I needed to do a skirmish for my 14th, so looking over the last few prompts the one that caught my eye was "Shapeshifter." I was after the appointed time, but wrote these lyrics in slightly over an hour.

Lyrics

Verse One:

I saw you in the shadows Like a secret never told It wasn’t very long Before your mystery’d taken hold We went to bed that evening I thought I had a clue When I woke up in the morning It’s like you were someone new

Chorus:

You’re a shapeshifter First you’re a hero and then you’re a grifter But no matter who you are tonight I’m loving you with all my might You’re a shapeshifter But I’m here to stay ‘Cause I can’t help loving you anyway

Verse Two:

Sometimes you’re a stranger Sometimes you’re alone Sometimes you seem far away Sometimes you feel like home Sometimes you’re the riddle And sometimes you’re the guess Variety is thrilling But this seems like such a mess

[repeat chorus]

Bridge:

You’re turning like the seasons You’re changing like the moon You’re shifting like the ocean tides You break from your cocoon

[repeat chorus]

This is such a unique take on a love song. It gets me thinking. Would it be a positive or negative to be in a relationship with a shapeshifter. I suppose it could be a bit of both, but I would certainly be complicated. I really like the outro. Cool write! #tit4tat

Variety is thrilling But this seems like such a mess...I like this line. What are the limits that we can handle in a relationship and we all do talk to ourselves and question if it is worth it or will work or not. #tittat

Love me a good contradiction!! We're complicated creatures, aren't we? We need to love and be loved, sometimes at the cost of our own sanity. We tell ourselves things and end up believing them rather than face the truth. I get all that from your excellent lyrics -- I love the juxtaposition of opposites (Hero/grifter; Riddle/guess) and how the singer is arguing with themselves in a song. Story of my life! Well done!

I like how you've used the prompt to inspire these lyrics. You tell the story of a difficult relationship with someone who isn't stable really well - and of the love that keeps going back for more - the ambiguity of whether this is a chore or exciting is well written and the ending is really open to interpretation which I very much like. These are a fab set of lyrics and would be great to set to music. #tit4tat.

Okay, this didn't go the way I expected. But I like it nevertheless. Great lyrics as always.
