Morena

Liner Notes

@beto says: for some reason I'm writing a lot of songs in Portuguese this FAWM... well, 3 songs, but it's the first time I write songs 100% in Portuguese for FAWM or 5090!

I had this chord progression that I really loved, and some lyrics that I wasn't so sure about, so I decided to ask @cairobraga to work on it with me because they are amazing and it was more than time for us to do collab together! 😊

@cairobraga says: I was so happy that the awesome and lovely @beto invited me to this song! to me it fits in the long tradition of Brazilian Popular Music telling stories about a love that's not unrequited but it's still "out of your league", but with an electro-punk edge to it, which to me adds to the feeling of anguish and resignation. I contributed the DnB drums aiming to solidify those feelings. and we do need more songs in #Portuguese in FAWM (or any language that's not English, tbh)!!!

Lyrics

Translation:

Oh, morena, you who are strong, who are made of the sea, Who embrace the world, who know how to fight, Who understand life and the secret of love, Oh-oh-oh...

Oh, morena, you chose me to be your partner, To dance through life’s road together, Knowing what is just, fighting for what’s right.

But I don’t know if I can keep up with you, If I can follow your steps, if my way of loving Is far too small.

And I don’t know if I can dream your dream, On this journey for two, you are more than I can be, You are so much greater.

Oh, morena, you who are strong, who are made of the sea, Who embrace the world, who know how to fight, Who understand life and the secret of love, Oh-oh-oh...

Oh, morena, you chose me to be your partner, To dance through life’s road together, Knowing what is just, fighting for what’s right, Oh-oh-oh...

But I don’t know if I can keep up with you, If I can follow your steps, if my way of loving Is far too small.

And I don’t know if I can dream your dream, On this journey for two, you are more than I can be, You are so much greater.

Clockmaker, who never stops turning, Do me a favor and turn time back, For life teaches us what love is, Even when love is no longer there.

Oh, morena, you who are wise and made of the sea, Who carry in your thighs the power to give life, And in your open mouth, the salt of tears. Oh-oh-oh...

Oh, morena, you who are a mother and know how to forgive, I just want you to know I will carry with me forever Your light, your scent of the sea. Oh-oh-oh...

But I don’t know if I can keep up with you, If I can follow your steps, if my way of loving Is far too small.

And I don’t know if I can dream your dream, On this journey for two, you are more than I can be, You are so much greater.

Yes! First Portuguese song that I recall hearing for FAWM. Love attitude, driving drum track and catchy punky melody. 👏🎶

Those drums really drive the song hard, and the vocal matches its energy! The words are quite poetic, romantic and inspired.

I saw the names and though I'm in for some Portuguese abd here it is.! I remember once you guys talking about the language! this is really cool, that is banging music! and great phrasing over it! the missing portugese song from Pulp fiction.

fantastic! love that insistent vocal phrasing, and while I don't understand Portuguese (thanks for the translation!) it registers loud and clear... great music to back up the vocal, too..... excellent collab and great to hear this! go go go ! (and note the narrator, dont sell yourself short- anyone who can go toe to toe with that rhythm and keep up has got something going!, lol)

This is great! I feel like it plays to both of your strengths. Musically you totally nailed the vibe of the lyrics! Awesome collab!

@ryuu

Interesting contrast here between the guitars and the drum & bass percussion. Yay for songs about complicated love, too!

(Português cortesia do Google Translate)

Love the punk guitars against the drum'n'bass, it absolutely works. There is a breathlessness to this that I love, but the chord changes between sections keep it fresh and interesting.

Oh man this is so good, I love the crunchy electric guitar mixed with the beats and electronics for one, and then I don't know, singing in Portuguese always gets me, your language is the best language I think, I listen to a ton of Brazilian music and I love the vocals even though I don't know what the hell they're saying, but it's so rhythmic. But now I can read the lyrics and I love them too

What @nadine said, I love so much how tender and plaintive the lyrics are, set against the relentless drums and growling guitar, it gives the song such an urgency to the pleading! Fantastic Portuguese too — I love the way singing in this language sounds. Ótima música!

Oi! I did not expect to hear more Portuguese in FAWM. I understand everything just cant write and soeak fluently enough to comment arg!

Your song has a lot of energy. Its like punk and electro clashing together. And yet the lyrics are typical brasileiro. The longing and yearning... Interesting match of styles and ideas!

Guess there is no appropriate translation for the term morena. Girl with dark hair? Don't know if there's a special term in English.
