Already a Happy Ending

Skirmish: Happy Endings (@atornberg)Liner Notes
Decided to do a skirmish for the first time this month as number fourteen and I'm glad I did. The deadline helped me write the first thing that came and it felt like capturing the spirit and purpose of FAWM right at the end when I'm feeling wrung out. I don't do them often, but I'm always amazed at what can happen in an hour. Ordinarily, I'd learn the song better before I recorded it, but that's not the spirit of a skirmish, is it? 😂
The prompt brought out the cheese, but I do love watching rom-coms with my wife (less so the Hallmark ones), so why not write a cheesy Hallmark song?
Things you notice only an hour after the skirmish: I rhymed place with place.
Lyrics
I believe in fairy tales at least why we tell them in the first place we need examples of what it is to love and to find our place
it's the I know you've got me it's the choosing what life brings it's already a happy ending
I like the Hallmark ones where they fall in love on Christmas Day I love an old rom com with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks
it's our memories I replay it the decisions that we've made it's already a happy ending
We'll take turns driving who knows what we might see I'm up for the journey because you're with me
it's already a happy ending

Damn, Phil--you could sing the ingredients on a box of cereal and I'd be a rapt listener. Your voice is just platinum level Americana. Love the drop D guitar--the tone is delicious. This skirmish output sounds like something you might've really put some long work into, so good on you to be able to have something so good just fall out of your head, the guitar and your golden pipes.
I enjoyed this quite a bit. Impressive that you created it in an hour. Love the contrast provided by the bridge. Really nice work!
Sweet love song. This is the type of song that people have for their first dance at their wedding or use for slideshows of memories or the point of the romcom when they realize that they were perfect for each other all along. Nice! 🎶
I am a sucker for sweet love song. Your voice is so warm and inviting, the guitar is lovely, and I’m feeling the happy ending. This song belongs on the soundtrack of that Hallmark movie.
This is lovely and sweet and I'm amazed that it came from a skirmish. Love the title line (and I like the repeat of it.) Nice bridge melody, too.
Love that guitar figure, too.
Vocals, guitars, etc. are so warm and feel like a vocal hug, like things are going to be okay. Boy, do we need that right now. Tremendous guitar work. Impressive.
So beautiful! Everything about this is perfect, downloading this. Love the lines: "It's our memories I replay' and "It's the I know you got me"
I'm absolutely floored by some of the skirmish songs I've heard this year and in past fawms. This is amazing Phil... just amazing. The rhyme scheme and couplets going so well together. Fave one is how you were able to bend language and have "Ryan" rhyme with "com". I love when vocalists are able to do that with their voice. Wonderful.
I'm a sucker for a cheesy rom-com and totally a sucker for this song that meshes this and the rom-com that are those last two verses. So well done.
Also... your guitar sounds friggin' incredible.
Great way to sign off. No filler from you this year. Even this skirmish feels well formed.
What a sweet dessert to close the meal. And I am oddly heartened that even Phil can make a small flub on guitar. Maybe there's hope for us mortals.
You got the little dopamine trophy! Congrats, mate. A strong crop from you this year.
I really like how you record. You have a nice warm, full sound. You have the kind of feeling like you're not in a hurry to get the shit done at midnight. Of course, your melodies are are spot on and full of feels. Congrats on #14!
Sweet song! I love this message to choose to see the good and the possibilities and to commit to it. We create our happy endings. Wonderful lyric and melody and performance. Great song!
Holy hell your voice is nice. It's perfectly polished for Alt-Country/Americana right out of the gate, very nice. I'm really enjoying the picked-out chords, lending this a gentle, conversational vibe. Very nice melody too!
That descending lower string motif is a really strong choice of intervals that totally grabs the ear. Delightful the way you ease off the playing when the voice comes in. The harmonic choice of minor over the sweet theme of the lyric is a cool touch. The bridge is crying out for a big string orchestra! Great song to finish off with - congrats on the win!
Love the guitar. Great vocals! Really strong lyrics too. Strong arrangement. Clean production. Fires on all cylinders. Lovely song! Super well done! Cheers, Smudge
Ohhh… I really love this and totally relate to the sentiment. I get totally hooked on the Hallmark Christmas movies. Your tender heartfelt delivery of the lyrics with the wonderful guitar backing delivers the sentiment perfectly!
Something about this gave me instant goosebumps! "it's the choosing what life brings .. it's already a happy ending" it's the choosing and the knowing! I love this because it's clear you love your wife! And it makes me so happy because I love my wife so much. We were high school sweethearts in '95 still going strong! It's the choosing! To not give up no matter what! It's already a happy ending when you do that! Great fantastic perfect song! (Written in an hour!) Cheers!
This is a great, sentimental, and warm piece. The guitar fits great with the theme and I could see this being used in a Hallmark movie!
I love how a skirmish sometimes lets you admit to things like Rom Coms. My husband and I watch them on airplanes together. What a beautiful song you managed to pour out. Straight ahead love songs always feel hard to pull off, but you make it look easy. And there’s this gravelly hint that the narrator knows there are hard days in even the happiest ever afters.
