Tape 3b T1: @nancyrost - tambourine T2: @peccary - bass T3: @harryklippton - organ T4: @beto - lyrics and vocal
@beto says: another tape that I received during 5090 last year, but life got on the way and I couldn't finish. From what I remember this tape was a replacement for tape 3a. The original got lost, the group started again, tape 3a should up (was mailed back?) and we decided to finish both. So here it is.
I think I might've bitten off more than I can chew on the vocals for this one, but I really enjoyed working on it!
Lyrics
I never told you that I love you I never thought that I would find -- hold on! hold on! I never thought that I would find myself alone I never told you that I love you again
Show me the money! Show me the money! Show me the mercy only a mom can have Show me the money! Show me the money! Show me the peace only a son can have
I never told you that I love you I never told you that I love you again
Show me the money! Show me the money! Show me the mercy only a mom can have Show me the money! Show me the money! Show me the peace only a son can have
I never told you that I love you I never thought that life would be so much pain I never thought that I would live it all again I'm going to be the last one to die I know
I never found myself a way outside the door I never found what I was looking for Syncopated Emasculated Regurgitated I'm feeling all alone
Show me the money! Show me the money! Show me the mercy only a mom can have Show me the money! Show me the money! Show me the peace only a son can have
But over time I finally learned the truth And I surrounded myself again with you Hit the wall Paint your door Catch your breath As long as you can do
I never told you that I love you
I never told you that I love you I never been into a house, a house of cards I never been not good, not good enough for you I never told you that I love you again
I never owned a house, a house of cards But I brought it all down -- you know! you know! Dilapidated Decapitated Amalgamated The dreams, they don't come true
I never told you that I love you I never told you that I love you

Cool musical stage with a great bass line and buzzy organ with that sparse percussion. I love the cool vocals and phrasing to deliver the pointed lyrics with those great punchy lines and hook. I like the use of repetition with the great verses and fun rhyme lists. Glad you all revived this 5090 tape for FAWM!
i barely recognized beto's voice at first because i assume they're using their "new" tc helicon voice processor! 😃 such a raw and conflicted-feeling song... full of joy and love but also dark imagery and confusion, which works really well over the almost pell-mell instrumentation that built up on this particular tape's journey...
If the 80s electropop folks in Sheffield had taken a leaf out of Devo's book and followed a more experimental, avant-garde route, they still wouldn't ever have managed to come up with something this cool. What an amazing combination of sounds and textures. And what a great song!
Really cool vibe and great use of all of the components. It always amazes me how these come together and turn out and the stories of how they were created.
Psychedelic! That is a wild organ sound. The bass is holding it down, and the vocals are other-worldly. This feels like a demo for a talking heads tune, but from 30 years prior. A very unique space.
…great song - great vocals - kind of a ‚minimal‘ feeling when listening to it (for the third or fourth time - i thought i had commented on this before?) which works really well - well done!…
Ooh, this makes me think of some kind of late 90s low-fi discovery - in a shoebox in a tragic attic. Great song - it is a really nice rounded - and weird! - popsong. That repeated refrain is really infectious. The vocal delivery I really like - I'm getting a dash of S. Malkmus and D. Byrne. The instrument choices really come together too. I'm kind of in awe about how people make music together in this way - this is another belter. I love how it just finishes too - that seems very in keeping with the DIY aesthetic. And its also a great way to end a song anyway - sometimes a song just needs to end so you do, codas be damned.
I love the tapey vibe here and the vocals sound awesome @beto! Nice touches of falsetto and the short delay effect works well. That keyboard is tantalising filthy sounding and combined with the bass really drives things along nicely.
Interesting choice to start with tambourine too, but that’s a great way of setting the mood whilst leaving things open for the next participants.
I love this sound! The lyrics and vocals really pull this together and I especially like the phrases in the higher range - so much fun! Hard to believe it started with a tambourine beat, but that's a beat and the bass picks it up, and the organ goes with it. Nice work everyone!
Interesting how sparse the track feels. I liked the way the word Money sounds a lot like Mommy - made me think about whether making money stands in for love we wanted but didn't get. It became such a different song for me in the second section where the mother son relationship comes in. Like this isn't a lover who is gone, but a mother who always could have been enough, but maybe never was quite.
Wow, the first track on this one was tambourine only? That's a bold choice! The bass and organ make an unusual and compelling band, I love how fuzzy the organ is! Vocals tie it together perfectly, great fun!
Wow this turned out great. That bass and synth move the song along. Great lyrics with the repetitive lines and Beto your singing is off the scale on this one...cool
Oh, man. I like this one! This sounds like some crazy demo from Devo or something. I love the lyrics and the vocal effect. You really tied this one together @beto !
I actually played bass on this as well, that's no cajon!
And the official story as to why we have two tape 3's from 50/90 is because I packed the box that @nancyrost sent me inside another box that I sent off to the next person.
On it way to @harryklippton , Nancy's package turned cheat-burster and popped out of my box. Since it still had my address on it it was sent back to me. So it worked out!
I love listening to these. It fascinates me how these grow and change as more people add to it.
If we had A.Eye Valentine’s would they say “Eye love you?” Hahaha.
I am so impressed with the four-track challenge in general, and especially in this case where you are resurrecting a lost tape! What a story! Starting with tambourine laid down a distinctive canvas to be painted on with the other layers. An interesting juxtaposition between the title and the lyrics (which are heavy!). The layering of each track creates a texture that matches the story. Nice work!
Interesting that 3/4 of us took the same role as in Tape 3a. Starting with a different instrument and rhythm took it in a very different direction, though! I love the bluesy chords on the organ, cajon played with a rock beat, and the way the vocal melody keeps landing on the seventh. An ambitious lyric, too, and a completely different, and cool, vocal sound. I dig how this came out!
Sounds like a lot of fun came together in this one! And a lot of love added. The elements come together in a great production.
I like the tambourine with that line show me the money, sounding like coins dropping into a big pile! I can hear some drums being added to this. And I hadn't realized it was Beto singing until halfway through! Sounds good!
