Everything Bagel

Liner Notes
Stephen Wordsmith: Wordsmithing Beacon: Composition, Triple Vocals Nancy Rost: Composition, Piano, Virtual Tuba and Clarinet, Mixing
Nancy: Ken asked me to collab on the music for Stephen's delicious lyrics and I couldn't resist. We worked it out over Zoom, singing all the way through to get the right meter. (At first it seemed to work in 3/4, but later on we needed room for more syllables.) We were going for kind of a music-hall vibe here. I think we succeeded, and now I want a bagel.
Beacon: When I saw these lyrics by @stephenwordsmith (https://write.fawm.org/songs/305020), it immediately thought Tin Pan Alley or Music Hall vibes to me, so I needed to make that happen, and I knew I needed to have a pianist who got it, so of course I asked Nancy to help me out.
Stephen: Sometimes a genre fits like a custom-made glove. Any initial uncertainty I had as to word choices vanished by the time I got to 'poignancy'.
Lyrics
Chorus 1 Intro: D7 G7 C I bought an everything bagel today It was too good a window to waste The deal would be nice at quadruple the price Given all it put forward for my tastes
Verse 1 It began with a bagel of poppy and poignancy Sprinkled with sanctity, scandal and seed Baked with a crust of delirium dust, full of Nuance and nuts for nutrition you need
Chorus 2 I bought an everything bagel today From the van on Victoria Lane I was just in the mood for adventurous food Something more pond’riffic than plain
Verse 2 'twas a sweet little torus of torpor and turpitude Coated in couthness, cold cuts and collabs Infused with infusions of ichor and innocence Fresh from the brains of the boys in the lab
Chorus 3 I bought an everything bagel today It just struck me as nice for a change And although, my dear sir, I'm a bread connoisseur I was taken aback by the range
Verse 3 There were rings of resplendence and raw rationality Layered with liquorice, languor and love All distilled and compact in a saccharine snack With a taste all but worthy of heaven above
Outro I bought an everything bagel today And my tummy this ev’ning has all hell to pay

What a great song! We need more of these 3-way collabs. This one is so fun and whimsical. Love the 3 Kens singing, the lively piano, the silly lyrics. Great work everyone!
Ye olde bagel ode! Digging the barbershop harmonies old timey bop! This line, love it “ torus of [C] torpor and turpitude”
My wife walked into the room as I was listening and said, that sounds like a very old recording. Indeed it does. And you've nailed the spirit of a vaudeville or English dance hall song.
You all hit that Music Hall / Tin Pan Alley vibe, for sure. It's the calmest song about an everything bagel I've ever heard - actually it's the only one I've heard. 👏 And now I want an everything bagel (and we've got great friggin' bagels in these parts.) OH and thanks @nancyrost for all you do for FAWM 🤘
Very funny to hear how differently we heard and interpreted it, like the layered vocals, and the instrumental sounds very spot on for the style, this fits the lyrics perfectly in a way, speaks to the quality of Stephen's lyrics they work well in very different musical styles and settings
This is so fun and I love everything about it. The musical style fits perfectly and the instrumentals are also very fun. (And no surprise that this bagel caused tummy troubles - that's a lot to digest and a lot of people are ichor-intolerant.)
Oh what a delight to listen to this! Such a mood-lifter! ❤️
I’ve never really thought much about the etiology of everything bagels until now. I like the call and response of the piano/horns during the interlude. Fun!
wow! this is quite amazing on every level! First, those perfect barbershop-style (?) vocal harmonies and the musical backing are so damn entertaining and fun and accomplished! (what a solo, too, the orchestra going wild!) .
Then, of course, is that wild lyric (which I think i read when it was originally propogated by our wordsmith of the southern hemisphere... ha, wild, and while not how I'd enjoy a bagel (where's the cream cheese? and maybe the lox, tomato and onion?) it works, --- and it hits at an interesting time- sadly, absolute bagels on broadway and 107th near my home here in NYC just closed for good, sending shock waves in the entire upper west side of manhattan which cut deep thru the population.
bravo to da three of youse (!) for this fantastic yeasty confection !!
Bravo, people, bravo! I marvel at how folks can use Zoom to make all kinds of awesome music. I appreciate learning how this came about. I think going the tin pan alley which I'm guessing is in that barber quartet sound, is the perfect approach for Stephen's lyrics (guy - you are freakin' amazing). Ken has that seasoned stage vocal that lends provides life to the words and Nancy, as creative as ever, adding the right balance of nuance, quirk and expertise. And I love how you've incorporated other instruments at just the right moments. Brilliant, all of you!
Great collab! Funny lyric, well-songed by Nancy and Ken. The slight use of tuba is funny, too! Favorite line: "Something more pond’riffic than plain"
I would never have thought of this take but man, I love it. All the parts are perfect parts but even more perfecter (did I mention I have an BA in English?) put together. Lovely wordsmithing here, as well.
I read these when they were lyrics only and now they are ‘coated in couthness, cold cuts and collabs’ ‘worthy of heaven above’. Lots of fun. Thank you!
I commented on the bagel lyric! Ken you are a bunch or barbers! Nice music Nancy, cleverly done, so visual I see 3 Ken’s singing and Nancy hammering the keys behind him!
A bagel of poppy and poignancy, that is definitely a first for any song I've heard! Love the harmonies, I think you guys nailed the music hall vibe for sure, and these lyrics are like the gift that just keeps giving, rings of resplendence and raw rationality...yes!
so much joy in this performance! i LOVE the vocal harmonies and sprightly keys (punctuated with emotive tuba). fits the lighthearted tone of the lyrics to a T. this is truly "one with everything"!
This is really delightful and fun! The lyrics are deliciously quirky and the music is absolutely wonderful! Love those keys and your vocals! Fabulous collab!
This is wonderful! Truly an Everything Bagel!
This lyric is so good - so clever! I love the music hall vibe with jaunty piano and full harmonies! And the fun instrumental breaks are perfect. (I literally laughed out loud when the tuba came in)
A fantastic collab! Well done!
Delightful! As others have pointed out, perfect genre choice to let all the fun words in the lyrics shine. Makes me want a bagel. 😄
Great collab!
Funny. It makes me feel even MORE positive about getting Everything bagels (my favorite kind). Really, I didn't know that Everything bagels had such depth and so many emotional layers. Love this, youse all.
Musically, I like the old feel and vocal arrangement. Nice job!
The style, group vocal delivery, and accompaniment all lend such joy to the delightful wordsmith wordplay. What a fun lyric and collaboration. Everything, in moderation... (and even a moderator!)
Wonderful (I clicked on it, perhaps in part due to a little hunger... haha) Some of these lines are gold "It began with a bagel of poppy and poignancy" Very old tyme vibe - I'd say "barrel house-y" Very much fun!
what an utterly delightful collaboration! Those lyrics are such fun, had to google ichor! The musical setting is so spot on for this. Great harmonies Ken, and Nancy that instrumentation is a joy, love the interlude, Top collab!
Yes, this great! The clarinet and tuba really set off the old timey piano and barbershopalike singing. The lyrics were fab - the listener was set to thinking this was a song about an ordinary bagel until the first verse. I'm glad it went so deliciously weird. Like a steampunk number you'd hear in a computer game about Edwardian mad scientists. Bravo all!
Oh man this has an old-timey vibe like an old 78! "Torus of torpor and turpitude" OMG I'm on the damn floor!!!!HHAHAAHAHAHAHA!!!! You guys...thanks I really needed the laugh! Great work!!!!
Vocals sound amazing, Ken!! The piano & production throughout is just wonderful. Lyrics are witty and creative 😊well done everyone!!
Sometimes the genre my collaborator sets my lyrics in immediately allays every fear I had about my word choices (and there were some... adventurous... choices in this one). This is one such moment. What a world of fun.
You nail the vibe. The composition is so energetic and cheeky - a song that revels in the joy of nonsense and the flavour of weird words for their own sake. Some of the lines are even more delicious than they sounded in my mind's ear - the delirium dust/nuance and nuts lines are so euphonious it's impossible not to smile.
The instrumental is fun and every bit as fruity as the fulsome snack itself. The comic timing with the punchline is perfect - and the secret to great comedy is, afterTIMINGall.
The tuba cracked me up, laughed out loud. This entire production is classy and hilarious too. Just entertaining and fun. Fantastic harmonies and the progression worked perfectly. Great lyrics!
Perfect genre choice for the lyric! Allows every delightful syllable to shine forth in delight.
I do believe I can picture the outfit of said bagel consumer and I see what Stephen means about the match of music and old time worded lyric. Delightful, quaint in all the best ways, a genteel curio of a tune for a gentler time, that time being bagel time. Sad about the ending though.
