This is tape 5 for FAWM 2025, leftover tape 7 from 50/90 2024

@squirrelhavenstudios: acoustic guitar and drums @beto: bass @nancyrost: vocals and lyrics @whispermouse: electric guitar (and "ooh")

whispermouse: The tape came to me with guitar, bass, vocals, and drums. I couldn't bear to record over the drums since they worked so well. Luckily I just picked up a cassette deck for my stereo (seriously last week), so I was able to do an external bounce and keep the drums as well as add my own piece. I hope my collaborators will forgive me for taking advantage of my position as track 4 to make that decision!

nancyrost: I'm glad you did make that decision! I thought the song sounded pretty complete with the drums when finished track 3, and now I think the backing vocals and electric guitar are the perfect additions. Also, I love how low my voice sounds on this recording - one of the surprises of working with multiple four-track machines!

Lyrics

Butterscotch kisses and licorice whips Candy cigarettes and wax lips I can't remember what I came here for Once I start, I just want more

Ooh, I wanna do better Wanna be a limit setter Wanna be unfettered I wanna be a better - quitter

Afterglow? More like aftertaste Wishing I hadn't caught what I chased One more fumble in the dark One more series that jumped the shark

Ooh, I wanna be better Don't wanna let the sweet turn bitter Don't wanna be a fence-sitter I wanna be a better - quitter

New day Clean slate Deep breath Meditate

A true calling, a true friend I'll stick with those until the end Here's a moment I want to savor Now I've found my favorite flavor

Ooh, I can do better Take a moment to consider What to lose and what to protect I'm gonna be a better - quitter

Sounds like the last band practice before the show, very groovy and the lyrics are terrific. The first time I heard, I want to be fettered. :) Sliding into a second listen...

Catchy little tune here. And the solo part towards the end really fit. I like the lo-fi hiss here.

This is really excellent, all the tracks complement each other so well and the lyrics and melody are superb - love that chorus in particular. Such a great vibe and a perfect advertisement for the four-track challenge (loopholes and all, haha). Great work all!

@wacha

I would never have guessed that this was not recorded together, you all did a great job of sounding like a band that's been playing together for a long time. It has a chill bar band vibe that I dig a lot. Great choice on leaving those drums in there, they tie everything together so nicely. Well done to all of you!

This might be my favorite 4 track collab I've heard so far. That hook line, oooh, that's so good. Nancy, this is a fantastic lyric -- great imagery, catchy bits, growth through the story, and did I mention the catchy bit? The arrangement of everyone's contributions works really well, I'd believe this was friends in a room together. Whispermouse, the lead has a lovely Dead vibe, but I really just want to say nice touch on the "oooohs!"

I love the way this turned out. @nancyrost your lyrics and vocals definitely turned what could have gone almost anywhere into a VU and Nico extravaganza. Really nice work. And @whispermouse your guitar playing also cemented this in my mind as the Velvet Underground. The tone you got on your electric is just great. I also like that, because you bounced the whole thing, you freed up enough tracks to also put on a background vocal. That was a nice touch. And @beto, nice work on the bass! I'm very happy with the end result here. Great work all.

@siebass

Nice groove in this. Relatable inability to quit delicious candies and sweets. I like the arpeggiated guitar and light vocal. Clever lyrical germ to try to be a better quitter as well.

@pooka

I think this song is a grower - like the sort of thing that'll come back to you at midnight when you're lying awake. Annoyingly catchy!

ha, another 4 track slice of pop goodness and endless fun. love it! the whole thing came together so well!

[avatar]

This is superb! It really sounds like you were all in the same room jamming. Clever lyrics and great production choices. I second the kudos for bouncing to tape instead of a DAW. Well done all!

@driftwood

This came out great. Props to all involved. "Gonna be a better quitter" will be in my head all day.

Another great 4 track collab, wow. The whole feel of this one is great, and those lyrics are great too, those opening two lines with the butterscotch kisses and the candy cigarettes just grabbed me!

[avatar]

Totally Velvet Underground. Sweet Jane-ish. Great collab!

[avatar]

Ooh yeah, all the Lou Reed feels. Really cool sound and the chorus bits are so catchy and memorable. Great lyrics and I love the line, “I wanna be a better quitter”. Great collab, all!!

@nancyrost you did such a good job on the lyric and melody for this one. It’s been stuck in my head for two days!

It's still amazing to me when these 4 track collabs come together. It's awesome to hear. The backing vox to Nancy's lead vocal is indeed a great additive. The guitar solo is all kinds of killin' and yes, the drums definitely needed to stay. It has a more organic vibe I think. To me, the bass is holding it all steady with the rhythm guitar reinforcing. This really came together nicely, y'all.

@boz

Really great VELVET UNDERGROUND vibe to this (showing my age). Great vocals and instrumentation - great collaboration!

[avatar]

Absolutely classic sound - modern-vintage and it sounds so sweet. I love that chorus. The last line gave me such a big smile. Definitely a style I love and you all put things together to make a gem! :)

@peccary

This came out really well, I love when stuff comes together like this. It's a big part of the beauty of these collaborations. I'm getting some serious 90's Lucinda Williams vibes from this.

@burr Mod

this chorus reminded me of the ernie banks quote, "the only way to prove you are a good sport is to lose..." until i realized that's not what the song is about at all! 😅 but it's a great hook regardless. this one has some nice 70s-roots-rock meets velvet underground kinda vibes, and the solo at the end was a nice way to cap it all off! i love how all these tapes turn out...

@kosch

It often surprises me just how "complete" these 4 tracks can sound - this one sounds like you were sitting in a circle in your rehearsal space running through your latest songs together. Bravo.

[avatar]

This is awesome! It never ceases to amaze me how making music like this delivers such coherent, well-written songs. It’s like magic. Or skill and enthusiasm, but I prefer magic. This totally works - all the parts sound great, particularly the vocals, which are brilliant. The solo is superb. Great thinking to bounce down to make more space, with bonus points for bouncing to tape and not to a DAW. That is commitment to the premise. Top work by all!

[avatar]

…wow! - what a great collaboration! - a really nice song this is and sounds like you were playing together every other week for a couple of years now - well done!…

[avatar]

Amazing collaboration! I love the lyrics - well sung! The guitars are wonderful as well.

@beto Mod

Oh wow! What an amazing surprise, I had already forgotten about playing this, and now it comes back like this lovely song? Amazing lyrics (that line "Don't wanna be a fence-sitter / I wanna be a better - quitter"), and all parts playing together so nicely! Listening to this made me happy and proud, well done everyone!
