A New Leaf

Liner Notes

#piano #oldtime #postcardchallenge

I haven't actually received the physical postcard yet but @catetaylor and I exchanged photographs in the meantime (turns out half a world is quite a distance to travel!). I'm a horrible sight-reader but I tried to noodle around whatever this melody was, and together with the prompt, and the beautiful art, this little tune popped out. I feel like everything I'm writing lately is tinged with impending doom, but I suppose these are the times we're living in.

Lyrics

I’m turning over a new leaf Might as well, since the forest is ablaze Yes I am becoming a new me Bringing my best self to the end of days

Like the band on Titanic There’s no need to panic And no reason not to be at your best Yes the trees are on fire And the flames climb higher But maybe it’s not as bad as the evidence suggests

So I’m turning over a new leaf Old habits die hard, or so they say This’ll all be over eventually So why not embrace the brand new day

Yes I’m turning over a new leaf My destiny lies beyond the compost pile And there may be some who disagree But if I’m going out, I’m going out in style

Love the production here, with the vinyl crackle, the EQed voice, the old piano! So good, Carley! And what a beautiful postcard! 💚

I'm imagining couples whirling round the dance floor to this happy/sad tune! This postcard challenge is so much fun isn't it?! Can't believe I only just discovered it this year. I always love your vocals Carley! There's a beautiful nostalgia to them and the crackle adds so much charm. Well done!

Great postcard! I can't read sheet music so I wondered if you used the melody somewhere

The crackle and filter really gives the old school vibe. I like that you used leaf in a figurative way. Turn over the leaf of a book....

This is so clever Carley. All the elements you’ve weaved together fit so perfectly…your singing style, the piano performance, the olden day melody and yes, the crackle. So good. I like that you’ve brought out something positive in amongst the doomsday times too. I agree, it’s hard to write cheery songs just now! This is so lovely.

The lyrics are something else - so fitting for the time. And I love that you’re bringing your best self to the end of days. Not letting the impending doom get to you! The war-time vocal sound and melody is just perfect with the old fashioned piano making this timeless. Great postcard Cate, and great song Carley!!

oh this is so . . . . . delicate - i love this so much there is nothing else to say.

…this somehow reminded me of ‚Que Sera, Sera‘ - very sensitive presentation, exceptional vocal performance and a really great production - i like it!…

Oh I love this. The vinyl crackle and the old sounding recording is perfect for the song. The doo doo bit is wonderful. Such a well written song, beautifully sung and performed. Listened twice.

Ahhh this is such a great postcard collab! I love the vocal style and the nature imagery. Love!

Truly wonderful sound! I love the static sounds and old-fashioned-ness of this. The dichotomy in the lyric phrases is brilliant, and with such happy-sounding music too. Bravo! Great collaboration!
