Lyrics

The Forgotten Feast lyrics and tune by Natalie Rogers; harmonies by Char MacKay Special thanks to @richardmasters(Love the way you manage to combine the themes of high fantasy and everyday shopping - and I certainly wasn't expecting that particular character to take centre stage in your song!), @laurenoxford(y'all's harmonies are just glorious <3 i love the soaring, held out notes!), and @beacon (Is that a glockenspiel I hear?) whose #commentsfirst on a blank song sparked this. We hope we hit the mark.

Verse 1: Near the village in the hills, where the meadows softly lie, A hobbit sat down by the hearth, with a twinkle in his eye. He handed his wife a list a mile long, of food for their next feast, “Remember the carrots, the bread, the cheese, and don’t forget the yeast.”

The forgotten feast, what a tale to tell, She sets off with courage, but it didn't fare so well. The hobbit sat at home, with the list still in his hand, She ventured on her quest, losing track of the plan.

Verse 2: Through the woods and over hills, she roamed with sword and shield, Searching for herbs and mushrooms - all the forest would yield. While foraging she pondered “Did I get the cheese for tonight? I forgot the yogurt, eggs, and peas, oh, the dragon is in sight!”

The forgotten feast, a list she can’t keep, She battles through quests unfazed, but forgets what to reap. The hobbit waits at home, hairy feet up by the fire, Hoping his wife returns with all she must acquire.

Bridge: At the town’s butcher shop, a voice called her name, A man in yellow boots said, “You’ve forgotten the game. You need spices, veggies, and flour too, Without them, you can't make a tasty stew."

Verse 3: With a sigh and bashful smirk, the wife she did confess, “I’ve forgotten much, the list at home, oh what a terrible mess!” She hurried back home, with basket half-filled and much to her surprise, Her hobbit just laughed, as her adventure she shared, with mirth in his eyes.

The forgotten feast, what a nice surprise, She might have missed some things, but not his favorite pies! Using the ingredients at hand, the lovely feast is set They laugh at the chaos, no new regrets to fret.

Outro: So, if you ever set out with a list in your hand, Remember, dear adventurer, to follow the plan. For the hobbit at home, who you will always hold dear, Awaits with a warm meal and a smile so sincere.

@owling Thank you for your kind words on The Forgotten Feast. As for cosy fantasy books, I highly recommend Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree! -Natalie

This is very fun, sweet, and I like a lot the end. I guess it could be labelled as "cosy fantasy", a genre I heard about recently (and wish to read). I feel sympathy for this absent-minded character !

Well, that's fortuitous—I was just going over Pi Day ingredient lists before listening to this slice-of-life adventure. What a sweet story, and relatable, too.

This is lovely and sweet. We all need a hobbitly chef at home!

Another sweet fairy tale reimagining. I like the vision of the hobbit at home. Imagining Rosy who Sam comes home to at the end of the journey. I think the Hobbit at Home might be how I start to think of myself.

Oh, I really enjoyed this. Whimsical lyric with some great storytelling. Love the glockenspiel. I'm impressed with how you managed to incorporate all the comments-first comments and still create such a nice melody and story. Well done, and a great take on the challenge. Very entertaining song!

i love how stories unfold from the initial comments like this — the combo of fantasy and everyday tasks ends up clever and charming. the glockenspiel actually ads an air of mystery i didn't expect!

Of course I love this - I have read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings dozens of times (and seen the movies as many times too!) What a fun tale, and presented with the uke and intertwining harmonies gives it the hobbit sound!

Very good combination of things here. The glockenspiel at the beginning is lovely.

A truly epic tale of shopping and dragons - the moral of the tale is an important one. Good write!
