Two Flints

Liner Notes

ZeCoop: I am always trying to write music that I have never written before - something original. I can honestly say that I have never written a polka until this FAWM! When Ken asked for a collab, I sat down at my Farfisa pianorgan (which sounds very much like an accordion) and started by pushing the buttons (bass notes and chords) and suddenly I was oom-pah-ing away and it was fun. I added some regular chords and sent it over to my brother who added his drumset, bass, shaker and tambourine. Then it went to Ken and Kate, who worked together to come up with lyrics/vocals. I took all of that and mixed it together, using the lyric as a guide for swapping between vocal takes. I think it turned out fantastic and it is completely different than anything I've been involved with! Thanks everyone!

Beacon: I've always wanted to collab with ZeCoop, Guatecoop, and Kate, and so why not do it all together. We didn't know what we were going to get as a backing track, and in the spirit of FAWM, we just rolled with it, and it's pretty cool. Kate and I brainstormed of what the music was speaking to us, and we had a fun time coming up with a concept. I hope this isn't the last collab I have with this great group!

1970's Farfisa Pianorgan (wind organ) #polka #windorgan #harmonies #oompah #Bavarian-waltz?

Lyrics

Verse 1 I still picture in my mind Where the light was soft and kind We were dancing through our days Like this world would never change

Verse 2 Corporate Grabs & Corporate Greed Religions with empty creeds Forest fires & rising tides Why must I always choose a side?

PreChorus 1 Do you have an answer to this problem? We can figure it out!

Chorus The answer lives in many pieces But together our chance increases It takes two flints to start a fire Only together do we get higher

Verse 3 - Conversations, open hearts Show we are not worlds apart We all seek the same respect, and Need a future to protect

Verse 4 See into each others’ souls And show we have the same goals Make our town a place of peace and Only there we’ll find relief

PreChorus 2 If we are to take a chance Only then will we learn to dance Together

Chorus The answer lives in many pieces But together our chance increases It takes two flints to start a fire Only together do we get higher

@hanley

Wow this is so different to anything I've heard this FAWM, or any other to be fair! Always love me a Farfisa/air organ. Mesmerising waltz feel, the vocals sway and swell over the rollicking instrumental. It has a slight seafaring feel about it, like I'm on a rocking ship way out deep in the ocean. A grand voyage!

Oh yeah baby!! i am addicted to the accordian polka type sound this year, so love that you guys have all collabed to create what can't be a polka, surely its just a classic experimental indie style mega song. And i adore the vocals and how they flow between the parts as well as that classic chorus which brings it back to a european dancing feel. Top work all round everyone

A fun work with a serious message, quite a catchy polka work!

[avatar]

ha, nice work everyone! its a polka! no, its waltz! its a floorwax! no its a dessert topping! its both a floorwax and as dessert topping (anyone else remember that SNL routine?) this is really wonderful and has a wonderful message that needs to be absorbed by so many folks out there... there is a european feel to this (the polka-waltz thing) that gives it a wonderful gravitas and its a fine fine song- in another world it'd be a hit!

@bijou

Oh polka! You all did a great job to get the polka sounds with a bit of attitude. This reminds me of the move James and the Giant Peach and I could see this song in the movie for sure. Cool song!

[avatar]

O yes. Very cool that Kalamazoo sounds so cool! This takes me back to my grandpa makin me pierogis and playing his polka records when I was a little dude…those pierogis are a big reason I’m a big dude now. It’s minor which is cool too.

[avatar]

But it's a waltz! A minor-key waltz! And a lovely one at that, well suited to the serious lyrics. You all get such a big, dramatic sound, and the duet structure makes it even better. A great new FAWM supergroup!

@gm7

OK, a polka, why not! Super group structing out theirs stuff. This is something i can relate and dance to without spilling by ale! The vocals blend so well...like you guys/gal were in the same room. I am not sure at the beginning of FAWM you had a polka on your to do list!! Awesome. A Farfisa pianorgan build in Kalamazoo and 2 sons from Michigan...thus the song title, I assume?? Awesome collab.

Sorry, I don't like polkas. Yep, I just don't like 'em! Sorry. But I will take a listen...

Wait, WTF is happening to me? As I am listening to this I am feeling something stirring inside me. Oh no, my life has been a lie! Because, apparently, I DO LIKE POLKAS! WHAT???

So, first, I have to recognize that this may just be the Best FAWM Band lineup ever! I mean C'MON... ya got @zecoop AND @guatecoop AND @beacon AND @katestantonsings ??? What? Yeah, this is what we in the music business (I'm NOT in the music business) call a SUPERGROUP! Eat yer heart out Wilburys, Highwaymen and CSNY!

Next, the music is actually good! No, Great! (OMG, I LIKE POLKA!) I am intrigued and delighted by the waves of sound as they wash over me and tickle my earbones! That pianorganicalodica sure sounds sweet and it is supported oh so well by all of that sweet percussion (didn't Zappa say "the bigger the percussion the better the pushin"?)! So, yeah, I enjoyed the music very much! A LOT more than I expected!!

Finally, after two or three listens I decided to actually pay attention to the lyrics and DAYUM, this is NOT yer basic beer hall bit of mindless polka-ing! Nope, this song has deeper meaning and messaging. That is a brilliant hook and it forms the foundation for the big message here that we can (and must) find ways to work together if we're gonna put out this fire and get this train back on the tracks! These lyrics offer hope that we CAN do something! And I hope we do, very soon! (I'll admit to being in more of a France 1789, heads-rolling mood lately!) Kate and Ken do a superb job of singing this tune...kinda the icing on the polka cake if you will!

So yeah, I discovered something new today! POLKA! Thanks to all 4 of you talented folks! #tit4tat

Gotta love the waltzing polka and a song about the importance of learning to dance together. Wonderful, creative and unique music and vox. An all star crew getting it done. Most importantly, this seems like a quintessential collab….Having lots of fun, just going with it and exploring boundaries. What a great result…

@nadine

I know songs from all of you, and you managed to write something completely outside your box. Maybe it's the accordeon? Farfisa? Maybe the waltz? The drama in the lyrics?

[avatar]

What a cool central instrument -- and, a polka! I like (and hate) verse 2. And I agree that "The answer lives in many pieces."

[avatar]

Haven't listened to this but I'm unreasonably excited for it

Fun fact, this is one of only two #polka songs on the site, the other one being an AI track

Edit: What a fun track

I love that you just happen to have a an instrument for this #SongWritingGoals

This is a fun track. Never thought I’d hear. Kate singing to a polka. Ominous and eerie; great lyrics about dire times and the need to work together. Beautiful sung and harmonized.

[avatar]

What a fabulous collaboration with fantastic music and incredible lyrics. Fantastic message that is so well developed! I love the layers of music with the accordion sound and percussion. The vocal exchanges and harmonies are really amazing and create such a gorgeous and engaging sound! I love everything about this song! Kudos to all!

@cts

Pretty inspired move that you decided to explore polka territory. You've enlisted all the folks more than able to join you on this exploration. This is one of the more positive "sign of the times" messages. Positive in that there's more strength in restraint and it's more inviting to hear. The musical arrangement is perfect blend with the vocal arrangement. This is indeed a winner.

Love this

@markg

What a mashup of sounds. Spooky and carnival organ, sweet harmonies. toy drum, And then a the lyrics spanning from forest fires to hope and cooperation. My head is spinning, but in a good way

This turned out awesome!! I've never participated in a polka :) I love love the vocal harmonies and organ throughout. Thanks guys!!
