Your Haunted Eyes (Once More)

by @carleybaer · @stephenwordsmith

Liner Notes

This whole thing started when I read Stephen's lyrics and heard the bridge in a different time than the rest of the song. For me, the bridge took what was otherwise a pretty particular pain out of its specific context into the broader spectrum of human experience. I mentioned when I first read it that I found their reunion so hopeful, even despite the horrors surrounding it, and I'm currently very drawn to anything that gives me hope. The line about Budapest unlocked some memories for me as well, and I could imagine standing in front of Nyugati Pályaudvar seeing a pair of old eyes I never expected to see again (which actually did happen to me once, albeit in a different European city, but that's another story). I probably shouldn't have spent so much time on the production in these waning hours of FAWM but the heart wants what it wants.

Lyrics

You were cradling a glass Of warm life that would pass At the world-worn cafe cross the street I watched the steam rise Til it lit your grey eyes As my own they would suddenly meet

You had chanced to escape In the grey morning paper A greyer world outside your door The news of the week Ever typically bleak Yet so better than years gone before

CHORUS And I thought I'd die I thought I'd die I thought I'd die Before I looked you in Those haunted eyes Your haunted eyes Once more

We once without quarrel At point of a barrel Embarked on our journey to loss You taking path A And I the path B Resigned for them never to cross

I dreamed of your fate As you passed through the gate With its promise of work making free While I laboured among Falling souls, old and young Counting down to the final of me

CHORUS

BRIDGE But sometimes, in the fires of hell The ghost clings tightly to the shell And what is forged within the heart No mortal man can tear apart Then nightmares rip at straining seams And give their way to waking dreams Which carry prey of blood and grime Across the mists of space and time

Now we're pushed in a trance By the firm hand of chance To the midst of a Budapest street I watch the tear form In your eyes grey and warm As my own they unthinkably meet

This is beautiful and powerful. Lyrically, the bridge is a little unexpected for some reason, not what I'd expect from the SWordsmith but still holding all the skill and imagery I've come to expect. The harmonies are gorgeous.. yes, this is definitely a gorgeous collaboration from two of my favorite Fawmers.

Stunning chorus! Love it! This is a mournful yet totally engaging lyric. Beautifully sung too. Gorgeous song!

Wow, this is great! I love the noir feel to this track, which perfectly fits the imagery in the lyrics (haunted, ghost etc).

Blimey... this has more than hints of a Bond theme tune. Something about the every-descending melody and then those gorgeous long notes in the chorus. Plus the whole Eastern Europe connection... Ah. This is such a top performance of a set of gut-wrenching lyrics. A wonderful listen to start me off on the last day of this fawm...

Wow, this feels like an entire novel or a play compressed into song form. The story crosses so many miles. Absolutely fantastic work from both of you, I'm in awe.

This is just stunning, folks. Describing the production as "deceptively simple" is a cliché but here it's just true. It's exactly what the song needs. And the seamless switch from 3/4 to 5/4 and back is a stroke of genius.

Mixed meter, love it! I see these eyes, I see them! Lovely storytelling, lovely musical performance. Enjoyed listening 💚

I think it says a lot for the lyric how fantastic both versions are. that tales nothing away from Carly or Mike who we know are both tremendous deliverers of a song. as I said elsewhere! how could humanity go this way, but you know it probably will again. great stuff.

This is fantastic work. Haunting lyric and a masterfully-created musical superstructure for it to live in. Holy cow. This is glorious.

A third rendition, and a third title. Yes, the eyes are what haunts us here - a constant through times, that have survived love and what was thought to be loss - and survived suffering beyond our imaginations.

This is a rendition as gorgeous as it is sensitive. There's something that seems so contemporary about it, despite the historicity of the source material... a nod to the universality of the feeling, I suppose. The eyes are the windows to the soul, after all, and the world is full of souls with their own tales to tell, each infinitely rich and complex, and all too often imbued with calamity.

I am undone, UNDONE, by the twinkle that creeps in in the bridge. Ditto the little pause before the final chorus, where all the layers come together like a rush of blood to the heart, a rush of thoughts to the head, and a rush of adrenaline... from.. the pancreas, you know what, I should have stopped at the heart.

Don't you go anywhere, I'm coming back tomorrow to gush some more.

Lush, beautiful, emotional and such a wonderful slow burn. Amazing lyrics and an incredible attention to detail. So many beautiful details. What a masterclass on collaboration. Win for the both of you!

Stunning. Wow. Amazing. Carley has brought this exponentially higher than I would have expected. OMG. So good. Goals. Vocals, instrumentation, aching, (insert rest of word salad here.)

wow, this is fantastic.. one of those i need to listen about three times before it all comes into focus-- majestic, a great marriage of words and music and performance. great job all around! going 'bigger' at the end with the background vocals was a great choice and so expertly deployed too

I love the dark feel to the tune which brings out the note of loss and wistfulness inherent in the lyric. This is incredible work. I bow humbly before the masterful music creation here.
