Who Is Like You (Psalm 35)
Liner Notes
Jon: last FAWM Hannah and I did a #gospel #choir collaboration. I asked her to do another this year, based on a Hebrew #psalm, which she graciously accepted. What with scheduling conflicts and a bit of sickness, we came down to the wire for writing and recording but we made the deadline! I had an idea to put a beat box, bass, B3 etc., but time didn't allow, and frankly I like this with just voices and piano. Reminds me of an old Edwin Hawkins Singers recording. I hope we've caught a bit of that spirit!
Hannah: lyrics and music; soprano and alto voices, soloist. Jon: lyrics and music; piano, tenor voices.
Lyrics
Taken from Psalm 35 (34), verse 10.
Choruses:
Oh Lord, who is like you?
Oh Lord, who is like you?
Delivering the needy
From him who is too strong
Oh Lord, who is like you?
Oh Lord, who is like you?
Delivering the poor and needy.
Verse: There is one who fights for those With no weapon to wield There is one who knows their pain And attends every cry There is one who is their rock And their strength and their shield Yes he sees every tear Their salvation is near
Pre-chorus: When I see that day All my bones shall say
Oh Lord, who is like you?...
Verse 2 There is one who stands against All the lies and deceit There is one who saves the poor When their foes overcome There is one who will repay Those who prey on the weak For he treasures each one Saves their lives with his own
When I see that day All my bones shall say
Oh Lord, who is like you?
Oh Lord, who is like you?
Delivering the needy
From him who is too strong
Oh Lord, who is like you?
Oh Lord, who is like you?
Delivering the poor and needy

I saw your 2 names and had to listen! I remember the last song as well! beautifully done! this is just an absolutely excellently done song. bravo
Well, I definitely remember your gospel song last year, it was one of, if not my actual, favourite at the time. This is equally wonderful. Two insanely talented people making gospel-infused loveliness. Classy piano playing. Stunning, soaring vocals from Hannah (I love how you can essentially play all the parts in a gospel choir, including doing call and response 👏😂). Genuinely uplifting and total comfort food for the soul. Thank you both!
I'm not religious as such, but I enjoy spiritual experiences (including through music) and your choir delivers (pun intended). Glory be!
Listening to this, I immediately thought of gospel choir directors I know that would love to have this for their choir! Nicely done! Enjoyed the vocals and the movement of the song in general and the way the theme was emphasized in the chorus. I can hear an even heavier, thicker piano accompaniment on this.
Glorious in every regard. What an inspired vocal performance, the lead, the harmonies, the melodies…Inspired, all of it. Wonderful piano setting the bed for all the rest of it too. Congrats on this one…
Oh this is absolutely wonderful! A perfect listen for Sunday morning! I love the question in the chorus that calls us all to reflect on our actions. The verses are beautiful. The melody is lovely - gorgeous vocals are harmonies!
I was singing along with the chorus by the end, definitely an effective hook! Of course top notch vocals and an effective piano accompaniment 💚
I'm not conventionally religious, but I do love a bit of gospel. I'd say resist the urge to over-complicate the instrumentation and let your magnificent two-person 'choir' shine through. Maybe some brushed drums, some upright bass in the latter parts and some churchy Hammond... but really, not sure it needs anything. Spine-tingling stuff.
solid gospel song that develops a line from the psalm into a memorable worship chorus.
This is amazing, and there's really not much else I can say that hasn't already been said below, except I am again blown away by your musicianship (both of you), and your hearts that love to worship and share it with the rest of us. Thank you! (And, Jon, I'm definitely getting an Edwin Hawkins Singers vibe here!)
