Patrick Mahomes' Lament

by @jeff9

Liner Notes

#Football #NFL #acousticonetake #humor Apologies for the morning voice, clumsy guitar and sketchy iPhone recording. Couldn't resist a Super Bowl hangover song, though, and needed to get it done before I completely lost enthusiasm for it. It's an unabashed ripoff of "Mick Ryan's Lament", written by Robert Emmit Dunlap and popularized by Tim O'Brien.

Lyrics

Patrick Mahomes’ Lament (To the tune of Mick Ryan’s Lament by Tim O’Brien)

Well my name’s Pat Mahomes and I’m lying here still In the lonely spot where my Chiefs were killed By the green Eagles from Philadelphia There’s no joy in KC this morning

I admit that I didn’t play worth a hoot But my offensive line didn’t execute Flat on my back from another damn sack Their blitzes blew in without warning

And it’s over now, the whistle’s a-blowin’ Up there in Philly the beer will be flowin’ I swear if I had only known I’d have traded my linemen to Pittsburgh

We had a good run going for three in a row But this was a brutal curb-stomping, though Our matador blocks and my crappy reads Now Taylor Swift, too is in mourning

Well, the aftermath can be the saddest part ESPN analysts can’t wait to start No doubt they’ll be picking our game plan apart We sucked is what they’ll be reporting

I’m young but I may not catch Tom Brady Still one more and I’m tied for second place, baby With Joe Montana and some old fat guy Who won a few games up in Pittsburgh

But it’s over now, the whistle’s a-blowin’ Up there in Philly the beer will be flowin’ I swear if I had only known I’d have traded my linemen to Pittsburgh

Ha ha! I don’t follow football, but my partner is from KC (MO), so I played it for her . Musically, this flowed nicely. As to where the beer flows, I’m pretty sure the losers drink their sorrow while the winners drink to their team’s success.

I didn't watch the superb owl, but glad I caught this recap. Funny stuff going on here. I laughed out loud on the last line of the first chorus, well executed. The first verse is excellent., love the imagery about the chiefs lonely spot, and the green eagles. Gives it a feel of an old western, and that continues on with "blew in without warning". The second part heads more in the direction of name dropping, which is definitely more of what i would expect from a song like this.

The song I needed this morning.

Hilarious...absolutely love this. Great to hear you playing guitar as well. This was so on point and entertaining. Made my day...

I was rooting for the Eagles, but loved how the Chiefs handled the 4th quarter like good sports. This is incredibly creative, witty, and fun!!

This is how I find out who won! After my Lion's Chief'd it (I'm going to make that a thing now, ok?) I just lost interest. Lions/Bills next year!

I love the "ESPN analysts can’t wait to start", good Lord I wouldn't want to be a Chiefs fan between now and the start of free-agency.

i cant imagine a better recap of the super bowl, and dont worry about where the melody came from, tim o'brien stole it from paul brady and it was a traditional tune to begin with

F**KING BRILLIANT. "But it’s over now, the whistle’s a-blowin’/Up there in Philly the beer will be flowin’" I didn't have a dog in this fight, but by the third quarter I was genuinely starting to feel sorry for poor Patrick. You captured that so well, and "Mick Ryan's Lament" is the perfect template for it. Fantastic work!
