Haven't done any "country" yet, and this is kind of "country", right? Good ol' drinkin' song! I hope you enjoy it!

Lyrics

DRINKING TO FORGET

Words & Music By Jerry Pettit Facebook.com/JerryPettitMusic

Neon lights flicker in this empty bar Whiskey in my glass, memories near and far Your laughter echoes, though you're not around I'm drowning sorrows, but I'm bound to drown

Chorus: I'm drinking to forget, but I remember more Every sip just brings me closer to what I'm running from The bottle's my escape, but when morning comes I'm still lost without you, and what's done is done

Photos on the wall, smiles frozen in time I trace your face with fingers stained with wine The jukebox plays our song, salt rim on my glass Tequila burns my throat, but the pain won't pass

Chorus: I'm drinking to forget, but I remember more Every sip just brings me closer to what I'm running from The bottle's my escape, but when morning comes I'm still lost without you, and what's done is done

Bridge: In the bottom of this bottle I'm searching for relief But all I find are shadows Of a love beyond belief No matter how I try To wash away the past These memories, they haunt me And the hurt, it's bound to last

Chorus: I'm drinking to forget, but I remember more Every sip just brings me closer to what I'm running from The bottle's my escape, but when morning comes I'm still lost without you, and what's done is done

I'm drinking to forget, but I'll always remember you

Definitely a country lyric, but this melody and arrangement are something else to my ear. Maybe something closer to a gentler type of power pop or something. I absolutely adore how you did the vocal melody over this chord progression. It maintained a delicious sort of tension all the way through that I always feel on some of my favorite Ryan Adams songs. Loved that stop after the next to last "done is done". That tiny dynamic moment really gave it a great bit of momentum. I think this deserves a spot on Jerry's Greatest Hits Vol XXI.

Drinking and country kinda go together really well as do the lyrics and music on this excellent JP song...cheers!

Country!! Love that guitar that first comes in during the break. It is subtle and works very well throughout the rest of the composition. Great lyrics and nice vocals, Jerry. BTW I don't drink, but as Susan basically said, maybe all us non-drinkers need to do so to forget.

Another fine song, Jerry. And, yes, you're edging toward a classic country theme. Now, if you could just add in a pickup truck or two, you'd definitely be there.

Classic JP!!! Thoughtful, and well articulated lyrics that paint a clear picture. You got yourself a nice country song here…

Kinda Certainly lyrically! Another good one, like the use of pause and the subtle keys.

It is songs like this that make me wish I drank - there is so much I want to not see right now! Great chorus. Fabulous lyrics so nicely written around your theme. Oh nice pause there - I love a good dramatic pause. Great transitions too. Nice work Jerry.

terrific country lyrics, but do people really drink to escape? i used to drink because the girls looked a lot prettier when i was drunk.

oooh, what a line: "Every sip just brings me closer to what I'm running from". Just hearing you sing that made me think of some powerful memories. A good song does that! I've always steered clear of alcohol 100% because I knew too many from my childhood who ruined their lives with it. I also feel like I get more done :) When the morning comes & reality hits, one must learn to face their probs strong & sober. I'm not judgy ;0) promise!

Classic line: I'm drinking to forget/But I'm drinking more. I don't think I've ever heard it said quite that way before. That kind of cleverness appeals to me.

@sbs

Like how the vocals jumped out of the gate as if they couldn't wait to be heard. Super clear! Appreciated the backing beat - really good this year! Nice write, stellar production.
