We've Become Disconnected

Skirmish: The Anaphora List Song Ch... (@tarahenton)

Liner Notes

@beto says: I've been wanting to a collab with Ken for ages, but for some reason it would never happen! This FAWM the stars aligned and we worked on this collab for @nadine's #inthestyleof challenge, where she challenged Ken to:

how about something electronic / new wave? The 80s were full of great voices, and I wondered, how your voice would sound on something in the style of Talk Talk, Soft Cell or Ultravox?

I listened to some new wave before working on the music, but I'm not sure if I followed the prompt super well. At some point the song definitely took a life of its own, but I hope we pass the challenge!

@beacon says: Finally I've got a collab with Beto, and this was far more amazing than I thought. In coming up with the lyrics, I looked back at the skirmish that @tarahenton did on Anaphora and List songs, and you can sort of tell the subject matter from the lyrics. I can't help but to be a "glass half full" kind of guy.

I've never attempted to do anything like 80's Synth Pop so thanks to @nadine for the push!

Lyrics

Lyrics ©2025 Ken Mattsson/BeaconBeats Music Music ©2025 Beto Dealmeida

[Verse 1] I don’t know what’s become of this world Other connections have now come unfurled

[Verse 2] What if it’s the banks & funds What if it’s the shots & guns What if it’s the thoughts & prayers What if it’s the moral tears What if it’s the judging panel What if it’s the Fox News Channel What if it’s the hate & greed What if it’s the social feed

[Chorus] We’ve become disconnected From our bodies and our minds We’ve become disconnected And we can’t see the signs

[Verse 3] Fear - Mistrust Hate - Combust Cheat - Slander Lies - No Bystander

[Verse 4] We can talk and we can share We can laugh and we can care We can sing and we can dance We can trust and take a chance

Help a neighbor, help a friend Help until the troubles end Help a father, help a mother Help a sister, help a brother

[Chorus] We’ve become disconnected From our bodies and our minds We’ve become disconnected And we can’t see the signs

[Bridge] We have the power We have the power We have the power We have the power

[Chorus x2] We’ve become disconnected From our bodies and our minds We’ve become disconnected And we can’t see the signs

We’ve become disconnected From our bodies and our minds We’ve become disconnected And we can’t see the signs

This does have a strong '80's feel to me, so mission accomplished. I really like these lyrics. We live in troubled times and so this message of trying to look out for each other in our families, neighbours and friends is an important one. Great melody and music mix in this. I really enjoyed this one.

I'm a big Information Society fan, and this doesn't sound like Information Society exactly, but I like it for a lot of the same reasons. I was definitely grooving along to the beat. Satisfying!

@briggs

You really nailed the 80’s New Wave feel! So good! I appreciated the optimistic encouraging tone shift in Verse 4, as well as the “we have the power” mantra, something that I need to keep repeating in the months and years ahead.

@aflinner

Good collab with a hopeful message :-) The promise of the internet is that everything is connected, yet so much of the result is that we're often driven further apart by how it is used and presented. But technology remains a tool: We have the power! Fun synth pop arrangement.

So many swirling memories with the sounds here! I immediately thought of Ultravox! Great work capturing the 80s sounds and vibe. The lyrics are timely and I like the messages of hope interspersed throughout.

This goes on a bit of a journey! Diagnosis then treatment. I know that a lot of people assume synth music is cold or sterile but I hear life in this song, it amplifies that emotion of seeking connection in a world that devalues that (frickin’ Musk saying on Rogan that ‘empathy is the downfall of Western Civilisation’). I adore synthpop anyway and you do a terrific job of it. I really enjoyed the faster rhythms with its parallel construction, gives it a sort of ‘power to the people’ chant. I really enjoyed this.

@markg

I'm thinking Devo-like and then read the comments to see this song is bringing many back to the techno robo times Very cool sound and lyrics.

Fab! Sounds like a lost Gary Numan track! Great response to the challenge.

[avatar]

Like a lost Visage track!

@siebass

Eurythmics vibe to open on that synth and drum machine. Layered vocals fit well with the spacey vibe. High speed cadence of vocal delivery is nice in the verse, especially contrasted against the slower delivery in Verse 3; high speed again in verse 4.

Lyrically musings on the disconnect of modern life, and realizing we have the ability and capability to change if we can remember.

Hell Yes!!! I LOVE this one!! Such a perfect 80's vibe!! Reminds me of Talking Heads or Devo. (I loved em both!!) The lyrics are absolutely outstanding. The repeating lines that morph as they continue.. just brilliant writing. The melody and cadence are awesome and perfect for the genre. Awesome vocal performance, and loved the synth, the 80's drum beat. The vocals are as outstanding as the lyrics...the harmonies and background vocals...perfect!! This may be my favorite collab of this FAWM... Outstanding, Fantastic... I'm on my third listen and every time I listen I hear more details I love... Just.... BRAVO!! @beto and @beacon and thanks for this gem!! #tit4tat

ooh i am so glad i didn't miss this one! What a great collab and in the style of challenge response. Ken i love your 80s style singing, you nailed the features, as did Beto with the synths, the tune is sooooo spot on of the style... i wish you could see the image i have in my head of you two with hairdo make-up and blousy shirts with corny vt editing

[avatar]

What a great collab! The cadence of the "what if" and "we can" verses is so good -- reminds me of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" in both meter and the way it drives the song like percussion. The chorus is great, repeating it to close it out was the obvious but perfect choice.

And, most of all, I love the tone and message of the lyric. I adore the protest song spirit that pervaded so much of this FAWM. Go us.

[avatar]

The synths are fire!! Total 80s vibe -- lemme go fish out the Jordache jeans and Swatch watch from the back of the time machine! The vocals here are perfect for the style -- I love that FAWM takes us out of our comfort zones! That chorus will be bopping around in my head for awhile! Oh, and nice to hear a topical song with some hope sprinkled in!! #tit4tat

@dudachris

The message, the hope, the art.... Its so good; I love it so much ❤️

[avatar]

wow, this is quite the collab! great work both of you, and that whole 80s synth vibe is done so perfectly-- and ken, its wild to hear your vocals on this type of style! you both 'have the power' indeed! the lyric is smart and on target and a great social observation..... way to go!

[avatar]

Words and music completely fit each other.

[avatar]

That chorus is straight outta Gary Numan! I like the texture of synth guitar(?) over the cleaner synth.

[avatar]

This reminds me of something specific that I can't quite place. Anyway, the lyrics are spot-on, and I love that they don't stay in that dystopian space. The synths are a great combination of eerie and poppy, and the open harmonies really send it over the edge for me.

[avatar]

Super cool! I'm getting hella Devo vibes.

Perfect synth tones, and really dig the motion in the vocal melodies. Much fun!

[avatar]

Oh man..... I'm having flashbacks, and I need to see this on MTV when I get back from school this afternoon! This is an excellent message, and the genre provides a perfect tableau/arrangement to make the point. I absolutely love it!

@liz561

I have an urge to puff up my hair and put on a jacket with big shoulders! The music really sells this beyond the lyrics. Good collab!!

[avatar]

Well played! This is great! I would never have picked Ken’s voice for this style! It’s so obviously Ken but also sounds spot on the genre! The music is right on the money! A real catchy number! Kudos!

@nadine

So happy my prompt made your stars align 😊 You definitely got the 80s down in the music and lyrics, both. Oh yes, they had many repetitions back then, so the anaphora skirmish seems to be a good way to start. I also spot a bit of social commentary on the topic. The chorus is sooooo catchy, just wondering why I hear myself singing "we become disconnected" under the shower. Mission completed, both of you!

[avatar]

This is a kicking rad song and I loved listening to it. The cadence in the even-numbered verses is amazing. Both lyricist and composer tackle some varied line styles with aplomb. I'm no new wave connoisseur, but this sounds authentic to me, with only a few subtle anachronisms (fox news channel, the worn-out-to-the-point-of-irony mantra of 'thoughts and prayers'...) letting us know that it's a modern homage. You deal with a difficult and ever present subject with even-handedness and lyricality. This is a kicking rad song and I loved listening to it.

[avatar]

I love that it’s in the style of Nadine ❤️vocals are so lovely 😊 production is so fun and catchy!! Great work you guys!!!

[avatar]

I love this! It's a chair-bopper. Ken it's so fun hearing you stretch into these new genres, and Beto the music is so perfectly retro. Glad the stars finally aligned for you two, it was definitely worth the wait!

[avatar]

This is amazing. Just the right amount of 80's. The enunciation/phrasing is a perfect call back. I like that it's a sort of combination of 80's styles but works completely all on its own while sounding more modern. It wears its influences well. This is a very good collaboration.

[avatar]

if i like the chorus more than the rest of it, the reason is that the music on the chorus is the kind of music i liked most from this period. im not so enamoured of the robotic jerkiness of the devo crowd. beto's music is so wild it cannot be contained in any faddish rage.

[avatar]

I think it fits the challenge well enough. I had nostalgia for the 80's listening. Cool challenge, and a great collab.
