Flugelhorn is such a mellow sound. Love it. I like the vocal harmonies here a lot. What a great song!
the instruments blend so well behind the piano and the vocal harmonies are very unique for these times.
Didn't expect that rhythmic shift and its seamless return to the original. All with a lovely horn to lead the way. Normalizing heartbreak as a part of searching for love is a healthy thing, much more so than the delusions we are taught to buy into by Hollywood.
Ah, here's the pain of losing a first love, laid out on the page. "I tore myself in two for you // Disregarded my own wanting" captures an experience both common and tragic. I love how the music keeps changing! So cool when the cello comes in. I like the minor-->major switch on the word "redemption." And then the flugelhorn enters, yeah! A rousing catchy chorus with comfort chords.
I like the second verse, how it intimates a wiser perspective. Another good vocal and melody combine to bring out the lyric.
I remain so impressed by the collaborative efforts of this group!!
stacked staccato piano notes and cello notes establish a cool mood from the get go. I liked the slow build in of the acoustic guitar attack and subdued horn. Vocal doubling works well for this song with a light touch.
For the lyrics, very relatable exploration of giving too much of oneself into an unbalanced relationship.
That flugelhorn and the harmonies really make this one. I just love when the breaks hit and the horns is playing on it's own. This also makes me remember my first real heartbreak. All of you really do a great job conveying emotions in these songs.
Some neat harmony tricks going on here, I wonder if that was intentional thematically. Like starting out with essentially switching between C and E, kind of an odd couple but lovely nonetheless (see what I mean?). Anyway, sounds great!
@drivebylovefest I love the poetry of your comment! ❤️
i'm not crying, it's just raining on my face. love the crescendos of everything/one coming together! what a cool collab!
What a great supergroup treatment for a nearly universal experience.
@quadrivium I love your phrasing of your compliment on then pieces/thesis rhyme! In thought on that one long and hard!!!
I love the way the mediant movement in the chords (C to E) gives the verses a very otherwordly feeling. The pizz. in the strings make it so delicate too! The trumpet/flugelhorn is lovely—it’s got a touch of reverb it sounds like and that really blends nicely with the piano. The way it climbs up the scale and the guitar does the driving rhythm just picks up the energy so much.
Well done, you guys!
The vocal harmonies remind me of the Mamas and the Papas, loving this vocal blend. And that pieces/theses rhyme in the lyrics is chef’s kiss!
Everyone does have a first heartbreak - yes we do! And it always feels good to commiserate with other folks. Takes away the pain. This song does that. The harmonies are so interesting. The flugelhorn and other instrumentation is epic. It feels like it could be in a musical. Excellent work everyone!
This is quite beautiful!! From the piano intro to those layered vocals and flugelhorn, this song has everything! The lyrics tell so well a common tale we've all experienced. Excellent hook/title! As I listened I went back in time to my own first heartbreak and realized those feelings are still buried in the Bad Memory Cemetery! But I enjoyed the reliving and this song took me back for that! Awesome collaboration to create something so special!
I came for the flugelhorn and stayed for the song. Lovely indeed. On the technical side, I'd like the vocals to come up a bit in the mix. At times, the piano overpowers the vocals.
Flugelhorn is great in this. I really has a great chorus anthem hook. The verse vocal harmonies going into unison vocals in the chorus are super effective. This song really emotes the bittersweet feelings of a first heartbreak.
Quite the suite! This is a super addition to the "break up" sub-genre. I really like the pre-chorus lyrics!
Very polished and thought out. The intro piano especially tickled my fancy. The first pre chorus hit just the right sweet spot. The piano and horn break after the chorus was wonderful too. So much to like! Great success!
I love the instrumentation. Chord choices are nice. I like the dynamic shifts and changes in the feel of the melody between section. Yes!
This is a beautiful song, beautifully performed. The piano and harmonies are terrific. Very well done. And thanks for the nice feedback on "Lost at Midnight." I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment. Oh, and I love that flugelhorn.
Great piano intro which sets the mood for this song. Nice chorus , harmonies and instrumentation.
Love the build on this song, the way it develops throughout seems very natural. I think the horn part on the chorus is an absolutely wonderful touch. Really like the theme of the song and the hookline/title is really nice, lines that really evoke the rawness of the first heartbreak - lovely!
That's such a sweet song! The title itself is worth the price of admission, but then you follow it up with a great tune and lyrics. What I especially like is that you've managed to create a mood that is matter-of-fact–even thankful–rather than bitter.
Beautiful lyrics, love the melody and the sad feelings but with also some hope. Great voices and cool arrangements! Congrats!
I love the harmonic strength of the song - C and E major great combination and then such a lovely Flugelhorn sound - so full and rounded compared with a trumpet. gorgeous.
Everyone does, but this collaboration keeps it fresh. The chords never go where I expect them to, and the phrasing is so intelligent!
Oo, that is a really cool verse chord progression, very dreamlike. I love the strong duet harmonies in the verse. So effective how it kicks into a more rhythmic, grounded, driving feel in the chorus as the lyric comes more into the present. Lots to applaud here! Well done all.
what @metalfoot said; flugelhorn is so nice. we’ve all been there; part of life. The chorus is killer
