Boris The Fish

by @kristian · @wynia · @deena · @wildrainbow

Liner Notes

@kristian: For the second round of #randomcollaborations I got paired up with @wildrainbow ; a new FAWMer. I asked what kind of music she wanted and she suggested either something Green Day (which would require playing these strange stringy Guitar things I know nothing about) or rag-time (which I know very LITTLE about except learning The Entertainer when I studied piano).. so I listened to some rag-time stuff (did you guys know there is a whole community on YouTube that takes modern pop songs and "ragifies" them?? kinda cool! and horrible. but cool) and came up with this after some twinkling. @wildrainbow then returned with the lyrics but got hit by a nasty case of sore throat so she wasn't able to sing it. Luckily, @deena had time to help out (such a star) with her silky vocals

#randomcollaborations #rag-time

WildRainbow - just to add in that this a true story which I came across some years ago and which just seemed to fit!

@wynia says : there was demand for some tinny trumpet so @kristian sent the call out in the wilds of the forums. I put a lil' something together; can't forget to give props to my better half and @briansmith for his help with audio engineering 🫶

@deena says: This was so much fun to be a part of - a complete surprise and a total delight! Now, with the addition of the @wynia's trumpet, we have a parade!

Lyrics

In the centre of Buxton, a Derbyshire town, A rumour went around that something was going down An opportunity, that no-one should miss And so began the legend of Boris the fish.

In the garden greenhouse pool, there was a new resident, His spine was broken, battered and bent. He swam upside down, he jerked and he twitched, Such were the injuries of Boris the Fish.

Never knew how he got there One day he just appeared The townspeople loved him, Visited and cheered To see this hero Was their greatest wish And so began the legend Of Boris the Fish

The vets said he was fragile, that he couldn’t live, But Boris kept on going, he had so much to give, He was a fighter and a showman, swam to glorious praise Till his little heart gave out and ended his days.

Never knew how he got there One day he just appeared The townspeople loved him, Visited and cheered To see this hero Was their greatest wish And so began the legend Of Boris the Fish

whimsical and carnivalesque - and wonderful performances all around. well done all!

This is wonderful. I’m just up the road from Buxton, so I will think about Boris every time I take a drive through High Peak. I do wonder how Kristian manages to nail every single genre thrown at him, with aplomb. I just love the trumpet as well, it’s so perfect. And the vocal hits all the stylistic notes provided by that wonderfully jaunty piano. I feel like I need to be in a dusty old bar listening to this.

What a spectacular story of a random collaboration that turned into a potluck jam session. The quirky music and the quirky lyric and the convincing delivery just had me hanging on to hear every word. @lbrewington - it made me think of your Squid and Worm / Legend of Murfreesboro song even though the music is so different. They both inhabit the stories with so much force

@cts

How can anyone NOT like old timey? This has such a nice, whimsical feel to it. I've got to figure out how to get @wynia's trumpet expertise into a collaboration. @deena's vocal is the perfect compliment here. The production sounds great on this old Mac Book Pro I'm using. And lastly (but not least) @kristian has once again shown us just how versatile and gifted he is. Bravo everyone.

@beacon

This is a lovely collab. It's got such an old timey feeling to it. Love the lyrics and so silly, and appropriate for the style.

@aeye

This is stellar. You all just absolutely nailed it.

[avatar]

@ragbag - thank you, loving that you love it!

@ragbag

Back again. Can't get enough of this. :-)

@hanley

Oh this is pure magic! So much charm and wonder in the whole package, a brilliant contribution from everyone. The story suits the ragtime style perfectly, and the treatment of all the instrumentation is absolutely spot on. I'd love to play my trad jazz banjo over something like this next time the lot of you collab!

Everything about this song is wonderful, the lyrics, the vocals, the music and the happy sound that is the whole.

Very much something that needs to be played and listened to regularly.

I vibe with it. At one point ragtime was the pop punk of its day so the connection makes sense to me.

@siebass

Wow, the music is great on this, really captured that ragtime vibe. That poor plucky Boris, broken spine and all, pushing through it all. Fun tune, I enjoyed the silly humor, and that muted horn really expressive.

@gm7

This music is a major flashback and I like it for sure! Piano trumpet great lyrics nd those sweet vocals. great collab all #tit4tat

@jamkar

Awww. Gotta love Boris. We don't often hear this kind of music at FAWM. I had visions of a dance hall filled with people. And you guys were the band! Thank you for being the entertainers of my listening space!

[avatar]

YES! Love this! So upbeat, catchy and fun. And the trumpet takes it way over the top. So good!!

[avatar]

Inspired collab - what a story behind it! And the song is such a showcase of your various contributions. Yay, Boris!

@ragbag

I keep coming back to have a wee listen to this. It's like a little happiness lift to your day. You need to make this available to listen to forever somewhere. I can't bear the thought of not being able to hear this again after the 15th :-(

@brownium

I can't stop being amazed by the things that people come up with on FAWM. Wonderful work!

[avatar]

This is just lovely! Evokes a total vibe! And what a fun lyric as well.

Great job team!!

[avatar]

This is fantastic, total time travel, the muted horn is perfect. Great story.

[avatar]

Timeless beauty with fun, sunshine and happiness. A perfect weekend song. Love it. What a fantastic collaboration. Awesome job all around, each and together. A treat to listen to. Jazzy and charming. Now I need a movie with your song in it.

[avatar]

Love the story, some great couplets. Definately have the ragtime feel down, the trumpted is awesome.

@cathreu

This was super fun! That ragtime horn and bouncy piano is a blast.

[avatar]
@wynia

@wildrainbow youre welcome but it was so easy with this great tune you and @kristian and @deena already laid down! So fun 🎺🎹🐟

[avatar]

@wynia - wow! thank you - that is perfect and adds so much extra to the song!

[avatar]

This just oozes personality. You gotta love a town that visits and cheers for a resilient fish named Boris. Love the Betty Boop-ish vocals, tack piano and 20s-style trumpet. A great collab!

@mctown

Big Smile.... so coooooooooooooooooooooool.....

@sapient

YAAAAS!!! TRUMPET!!! That is now just PERFECT! 😀

[avatar]

Oh my god I love this so much!!! Definitely one of the best songs I've heard this month,

[avatar]
@wynia

@sapient come back for another listen! I added tinny wobbly trumpet 🎺

[avatar]

Great job learning something new and applying to a lovely song. Bravo!

[avatar]

This is utterly joyful. Everything about it is great. Jangly piano, funny lyrics and excellent vocals. Love it.

[avatar]
@ryuu

Love the record crackle. Hilarious story, great delivery, perfectly wonky piano tuning – it's perfection!

[avatar]

I’m obsessed with this quirky lil bop! It’s proficient and charming at every turn!

[avatar]
@ragbag

This is terrific. Really catchy tune, great vocals and a wonderful lyric. Super work. Great cheerful fun. Most enjoyable. :-). EDIT - the addition of tinny trumpet since I first heard it elevates it to a whole new level.:-)

[avatar]
@leencha

@robynmackenzie, you love that slightly detuned piano? Well, actualy I do too… That’s maybe a reason to not let mine tuned! 😄

[avatar]
@leencha

These sounds like live drums. Nice piano playing. Sounds fun, because of the musical style and the lyrics.

[avatar]
@nadine

Mad respect for writing a song on a style you never played! I would pass when I hear ragtime cause thats quite hard on piano. You nailed the typical sound. Playful riffs, cool lyrics and just the right voice.

[avatar]
@sapient

Oh, a trumpet would be absolutely magical on this! I know almost nothing about ragtime, other than the entertainer, so I'd be going out on a bit of a limb to say with confidence that you all nailed the vibe, but what the heck... You nailed it! (And c'mon, you know who to ask if you ever need guitars... 😎)

[avatar]

Oh this turned out so great!! Love that slightly detuned piano and those rolling drums. @deena’s vocals are sooooo good and those lyrics are delightful!! Amazing job to all!

[avatar]
@negasi

Well you know when the @thewalrusking sees a song about a fish, especially with one as cool a name as Boris, he has to listen. Quite happy am I that I did listen because this is just a beautiful example of 3 people coming together and creating a seriously catchy and beautiful song. I love the music its got me dancing, the vocals are silky smooth and the lyric tells a story that is absolutely touching, straight to the heart. Amazing song and a place in walrus halls of honor for Boris The Fish!

[avatar]

Oh heck yeah! The humor, the story, the ambience, the music...damn you nailed the ragtime feel. All of y'all. I love the piano break to celebrate Boris. I would've loved seeing Boris - such a resilient, buoyant, and inspiring fish!

[avatar]
@kkd

This collaboration is great! Love the rag-time which goes so well with the vocals. The title Boris the Fish drew me in to listen and I'm glad I did. The singing is also perfect for the ragtime feel. Great collaboration!
