I Want To Believe

Liner Notes

HFO cranking out three songs in a day? And managing to pull off a nice middle eight and even some half-decent #vocal_harmonies? That's unpossible! Bring on the #trainbeat, baby.

The fact that this is a #country #filk song constructed around quotes from the X-Files might suggest that I'm becoming increasingly unhinged as we approach the finish line.

I couldn't possibly comment.

Edit: @sbs wins! She got the reference in verse 2: https://billymeierufocase.com/asketdeconstruction.html

Lyrics

Funny how each midwest town looks just like Vancouver Makes me think that someone Might be playing fast and loose Flying saucers crashing down No room to manoeuvre Mulder's in the dog-house And somebody's cooked his goose

There's a lesson to be learned here Though I have to say it's tough No matter how paranoid you are You're not paranoid enough

No, the truth's no longer out there Each new crazy theory falls through Even if it is in its underwear The Internet is never good for you

That poster on your wall is Swiss A guy called Billy Meier The picture that he says he took Ain't what it's claimed to be A punchline you won't want to miss His beamship was no flyer; The aliens he photographed Were dancers on TV

A member of your family Who's outside evolution? You might be missing time But it cannot be denied: Plot lines that are constantly Evading resolution Are just a sign that you are being taken for a ride

This is really delicious! It's got such a catchy beat and I love the vocals so much. I don't get all the references but I think I'm going to have to play it for my mom because she probably will. This has such a madcap groove to it and it makes me want to dance.

The internet is never good for any of us. I enjoyed the snare driving beat behind this. Following along with the crazy plotlines of the X-files. Is the smoking man in this one? Taken for a commercial ride to never resolve. Nice open solo too. My fav part was the drums and unhinged sounding guitar sliding and staccato notes.

Really creative idea and well-executed!

Really Cool! Love the feel and the lyrics. Great job!

Don't recall you doing country before! This is some awesomely twisted prog rockabilly (progabilly?). Sweet guitar work, as usual. Big X-Files fan way back when.

I decided to subtitle this one Confabulation on Avocado Toast. I’m going to have it running through my head whenever I think about a family member who has lost most of his memory and replaces the missing bits with snippets from the news.

So cool, creative, fun and fantastic song, singing and playing. A true ride. Thank you so much. Love the dynamic feel here and clever lyrics, instrumentation and your vocals. You smashed it.

Love the little touches of production in the background, the long tail reverb works nicely in the choruses and I like the rubbery bass and generally the kinda-80s stylings, but not 80s if you mean. It's a really interesting melding of genres! I think my fave part is the middle 8, melodically and tonally within the narrative of the song. Great write!

Came here for the trainbeat tag. Stayed for the fun of all these references and lines.

Laughed out loud when that first chorus hit its final couplet.

Enjoying the busy bass as well and the echoey guitars in the instrumental bit ~ 2:00.

I felt like I was taken for a ride on this song -- but in a good way. Lots of great lines and a super fun musical vibe.

Okay; you had me at the Vancouver/manoeuvre rhyme! Love the train rhythm underpinning this and moving it along. Also, right now, I'm definitely on board with "No matter how paranoid you are/ You're not paranoid enough."

@burr Mod

that squelchy-but-muffled bass line underneath a trainbeat is a cool juxtaposition. i gotta admit, i'm not up on all the theories referenced because i'm not deep enough into any fandom for this kind of stuff to surface. but then again, that's kinda the point the song is making isn't it? great listen.

Key takeaway; the X-Files were not nearly out there enough because internet conspiracy theories c. 2025 are so nuts.

This is country in the way Dire Straits do country, so good that it sounds like prog rock doing country.

@beacon

Surprisingly, the thing that I noticed first is the amazing rhyme scheme. Really well done. The rest is the standard amazing HFO production. And good on the harmonies!

Rollicking country style work, like the X files connection in the lyrics and bouncy feel to the work.

@sbs

Definitely has a country vibe - lol! But mixed in with some groovy late 60s GoGo dancer vibes.

CHRIS! This is very silly indeed. But it's catchy as hell and LOADS of fun. I'm not quite sure how but that C&W approach with your lovely big proggy sounds slapped on top really really works. Love the little step-up in the pre-chorus. And then up again into the chorus itself. Really clever. And a great song.

@sapient

I came for the tags and left with a big grin. I'm a sucker for a good trainbeat, and pinning it under lyrics about the X-Files? Yup. I'm here for that! There are some really pleasing chord changes going on in the chorus, and the last 4 lines of that last very just sum the whole thing up perfectly. 🤪🤩

this sounds great on my monitors. I love anything with flying saucers ;) great job

I'm on season five watching nightly with my 11yo, so had to click through... thanks for the reminder of Mulder in his underwear (or was it speedos? Same difference...)

@dhiatt

Incredible rhymes here. Super fun lyrics, extremely evocative of a particular tv show. Fun, active bass line and cool spacy vibes guitars. Really fun!
