I Know You

Liner Notes

Posting my first collaboration on the last day of FAWM :) @carolga reached out to me to see if I'd be interested in adding music to her lyrics. I am a huge plant person, so I was more than happy to oblige.

When chatting about the tune I wrote "Music, cats, and family buoy me in life. Plants too. I have killed so many plants, but I also have plants that have been with me through my depression journey that are somehow still alive. (Even a few of the finicky ferns!) I think that’s one reason I resonate with your lyrics. I’ve heard “pets are the new kids and plants are the new pets” for my generation 😂 It’s true for me!"

The track turned out a bit moodier than expected, but that was probably the energy my thirsty plants were sending me.

@carolga: I am so excited about this collaboration! I was from the moment I heard @alyak72's music and voice and thought what a great fit they would be for the words I had written - which I never expected to hear sung! A tentative ask and a willing reply and we were away. @alyak72 , I can't thank you enough for your beautiful interpretation. I love your sound, your voice, your sensitivity and the evocative song that has been created. Have really enjoyed our connection through this too <3

Lyrics

(The Internal Monologue of House Plants)

I hear you I hear everything you say I'm not listening but I hear you

It's in my blood The blood I have To hear your words I hear you

I take it in I know you Your words flow through my veins

Discuss, explain, expound, chitchat I hear you

Endearments, cusses, news and verse Fall on my leaves I take them in

I know you

Oh wow, this is kind of haunting! I love this melancholy piano and vocal line. The lyrics are wonderful and the music elevates them to something really profound!

Hooray for first collaboration on last day. I was listening without reading first and imagined a child of any age singing to a parent, but then on reading the notes thought about my own philosophy of plants which is “You’re welcome to live here as long as it works for you” and amazingly many do survive - including the beefsteak begonias who somehow hibernated for 4 months when we took off for COVID. Glad to be finding your music in the waning hours of FAWM. See you next year!

Lovely piano playing and vocals. Poor plant, hearing everything and unable to respond, well, except to breathe out oxygen so you have more air to sing with. Talk about unconditional acceptance.

Nice lyrics. Beautiful vocals. Nice, controlled piano playing too. Less is more is the approach here. I love how there is space in the lyrics. This emphasises the impact. #tit4tat

I think the dark and heavy piano chords contrast very nicely with the 'light' vocals. Makes a great combo. The reverb on the vocals sounds great too. I like the melody a lot, especially the 3-syllable lines such as "I know you". It sounds 'simple' but it's hard to make something sound simple and good.

I also like the very short lines of the lyrics, together with the relatively slow melody. Another great detail is the stereo variation in the bridge.

1st COLLAB...CONGRATS. What a great piano sound .. spare arrangement but it's perfect for this clever topic, IMO. It allows the vocals to be the center of the song and "I do hear you". wonderful. #tit4tat

Congrats on your first collaboration! This is a lovely, moody piece. Your music and vocal delivery are a perfect match to the tone of the lyrics. Brava!

What a fascinating idea for a song! The piano and melody really set the atmosphere beautifully. Great collaboration! The idea of endearments and curses that “fall on my leaves” is so haunting. #tit4tat

"I'm not listening, but I hear you" sounds like something my human kids would say just as much as my plant kids. Lovely piano treatment and ethereal vocals = moooood. #tit4tat

Great vibe to this. Serene, quiet and intensely compelling at the same time. The words convey a sensitive patient ethereal feel and the vocals and music enhance this extremely well. Great collaboration and total result. Cheers
