Missouri River Lullaby

Liner Notes

A kind of #cowboy #nostalgic #nature ballad that Joe sent at the beginning of February. I told him it sounded like it should have a western style tune and he said: Exactly. As it is, it came out more like Brian Wilson's interpretation of a cowboy ballad. Music written and recorded this morning, Feb. 28.

Lyrics

Find me a river with a slow winding course Lead me to the unexpected source Sing me the song that that you sang at the start The song that got lost in my heart

We were singing a tune beneath warm summer skies The Missouri River Lullaby

I was born in mountains when the springtime was young I was raised in the meadows where the meadow lark sung I drank from the snow melt and leaped with the trout I nourished the truth, never had any doubt

We were singing a tune beneath warm summer sky The Missouri River Lullaby

Oh I would float through the hills to the plains Feeling the sun and the warm summer rains I’d sing through the oxbows and treasure each turn What marvelous things I would learn

I’ll be far from city when my journey is done I’ll lie on my back and I’ll soak up the sun I’ll kneel in the river and watch as it runs I’ll build a simple altar and worship the one

I’ll be singing a tune beneath warm summer skies The Missouri River Lullaby

Just beautiful, the singing, the lyrics, the whole loving feel of the heartland...I hear the echoes of Harry Nilsen and I really love the chord changes..... really beautiful sir... I'll put this repeat.. Thank you so much.. Pearse

That’s absolutely what it sounds like! And I love it! To get a Brian Wilson comparison the melody has to be masterly, and this one is. When you go into the “We were singing a tune beneath warm summer sky” line, as a listener you just feel your whole body lift. The words feel like an old standard, and have that Mother Nature’s Son bucolic idyll vibe which fits so well with the Wilson-esque melody from Jon. Classic and classy collab, gents.

Those vocals are VERY Beach Boys! A wonderful lyrical story that didn't need the usual 'cowboy' sound at all!

I totally hear the Brian Wilson influence, if he'd grown up in the heartland. Love the chord choices accentuating the beauty and wonder of the landscape. Gorgeous bridge, and I love that descending title phrase.

Love all the scenery you paint with this song. Great example of creating a mood through imagery! That gentle pad in the background is a nice subtle touch, too.

Such a yearning. Wonderful descriptive elements of life in the natural surroundings of mountains, meadows and the river. Those words set a scene of peace and tranquillity….and home. Who wouldn’t want to go back…lovely paying and singing.

Dripping with nostalgia. You paint such a picture of a time remembered fondly. The music supports the lyric perfectly. Fine work.

this really does sound like a song brian wilson might have written for a mellow western movie..one of those family homesteader movies with gregory peck as the patriarch. it is a gorgeous song with a melody that effortlessly shifts through the lovely changes. the vocals have a relaxed surface that belie the intensity within.
