Lyrics

Lyrics: Patty Lakamp 2025 Music: Mark Fulwider

V1 Well, I don’t walk so steady any more Takes me ‘bout all day to read the news Sometimes I can’t follow all that’s happenin’ in the world Or appreciate my children’s views

V2 I don’t drive at night, it bugs my eyes And my food doesn’t taste the way it did It’s hard to put my socks on and I’m slow to get around I never had that problem as a kid

Ch But sometimes in my mind I’m seventeen again Just itchin’ to be twenty-one In my mind, my life is all ahead of me Instead of feeling almost done I’m seventeen again

V3 Well, I bristle when them tadpoles, they laugh at me They say, “Hey, old man,” the way they do Then it hits me how I used to say the same And I tell them, I was once like you

V4 I don’t recognize me in that lookin’ glass That face got way too many lines Well, I was never fool enough to think I’d never age Yet somehow, it caught me by surprise

Ch But sometimes in my mind I’m seventeen again Just itchin’ to be twenty-one And in my mind, my life is all ahead of me Instead of feeling almost done Yeah, seventeen again

Br I remember seventeen I was a rocket, ready to fly Nothing but the big wide blue In a boundless sky Life was ready So was I

Ch Sometimes in my mind I’m seventeen again Just itchin’ to be twenty-one In my mind, my life is all ahead of me Instead of feeling almost done I’m seventeen again

17 again is the way my wife makes me feel. That brought me to your song. You had me chukle a couple of times. I did relate. I remember I heard it said in a movie by an old lady glancing at a young man : "the trouble is our body gets old and our mind stays young !"

Oh and graet blues rock. Would have gladly played some harmonica on it !

Great lyrics! The tadpole reference is a perfect fit for the idea, which is so recognisable and I guess ubiquitous amongst the over-50s ... that mind-body gap phenomenon. Enjoyed the nice and easy rolling rhythm of the song, and the twanging guitar and powerful and mature voice really combine to do the song justice.

That is some true and blue country music and vocal delivery right there. Sounds very authentic. The lyrics describe the aging process wonderfully. It really does take everyone by surprise.

@sycophant

This is amazing… great collab, the lyrics match your voice perfectly. That second verse reminded me of conversations with my grandfather. Very cool so my thanks team!

tell it like it is. your voice is perfect for these lyrics, love the arrangement and production. you can make it to 65 without much change. then at a certain point , everything starts to fall apart. you laid this out without a doubt. still thinking like a teen, but knowing you just cant pull it off anymore, nowadays i spend more time checking out my blood pressure than i used to spend checking out the girls.

Love your natural delivery, Mark, and also sounds like you're having a good time with it. Perfect choice for this and especially like your delivery of the last line of each verse (and its harmony). @greengrassgirl, what beautifully crafted lyrics. Favorite lines: In my mind, my life is all ahead of me Instead of feeling almost done" Great collab!

Great collaboration! Nice arrangement and feel to bring this great set of lyrics to life. Can relate. 😬🎶👏

Nice collaboration! The country feel is legit here and the vocals are great as is the musical bed. And the lyrics are really clever. There are plenty of songs about wishing you were young again, but I don't think I've ever heard one before where the singer imagined being so young that their imagined youthful self wanted to be a little bit older ("itchin' to be twenty-one"). I really like that conceit. Great chorus. Great work!

What a wonderful collab! Really good tune, excellent performance & production. Bravo! 👏 🙌🔥🔥

@hbusse

Such a fun and catchy collab! The music and lyrical styles match each other really well. I had to laugh at the “tadpoles” lyric. Also relatable - I often tell people I feel like I’m just always going to be 26 in my mind, lol!

@sheslin

The twang and attitude in these vocals is awesome! Excellent use of harmony also. Great beat, cool guitar fill, nice melody - and I love how you treated the last line in the verses - and also the last line of the chorus - so good! I absolutely love the song concept and you really captured a moment we all feel from time to time when we are long past seventeen. Wonderful contrast between the content of the verses and the chorus + bridge. It really transports you to those moments in the chorus and bridge. Excellent writing and a great collab!

@gordon

This sounds like a newly discovered country classic that someone found in a vault. Excellent stuff, great collaboration

This is what a great cowrite should be. You each took your strengths and the synergies combined to make a compelling production that made me smile, laugh, and maybe cry a bit. Fantastic production of a well written lyric. Loved it!

[avatar]

Nice production! A song with a message. I’m enjoying the lyrics + vocals + guitar + percussion.

[avatar]

Great job to you both on the production of this! Patty the lyrics are on point and the thought very relatable. Thank you for your kind encouragement on my songs as well! Mark, you really did an excellent job at making this sound so country. Love the sound! :)

[avatar]

Great guitar, lyrics, and vocal delivery! I really enjoyed the stacked vocals, production, and sentiment of the lyric.

[avatar]

Great lyrics, delivery and production! I'm only 34, but man - where are the years?! Though if I'm being honest, I wouldn't like to go back.

@andrea

Love the country vocals for these lyrics. Brings a perfect attitude/vibe. Nice collaboration!

[avatar]

Well, you can't go wrong singing over @greengrassgirl lyrics. I think this is the first song of yours I've heard, Mark. Great job! I usually do some country myself (about 20% or so), but this FAWM I think it's all pop. Great, great vocal! ❤️

[avatar]

Ha ha, I could recognise myself in this. Does that mean I'm not 17 anymore? Fun lyric!!

[avatar]

Fun, great sound and great lyrics!

@bee

@kosch

As a 62 year old teenager ... I feel all of this. Great - relatable - lyrics brought to life wonderfully - it is a perfect blending of lyrics and music. Sweet job guys!

[avatar]

Great story telling in the lyrics and I can relate to this one! Nice pace to the tune too and love that little Rolling Stones style riff that pops in occasionally.

[avatar]

Smart move mate, Patty does cool lyrics! Nicely done , very trad. Like the lyric!

[avatar]

Yup, definitely relating to a lot of these lyrics. I really like the vocal, fits it well. Tadpoles...haha that's a good one. Enjoyed listening to this one! Made me smile.

[avatar]

Oh, I think I can relate to this one! Actually, I tackled the same theme with a song called "Twenty Years Past Handsome". I can't show it off here because it was done beyond FAWM.

So much for my song history. This song deals with the theme of aging in fine fashion. The lyrics are perfect and the music is spot on. Commendations to the team of Patty and Mark.

Thanks a million for letting me work on your song Patty! We’ll do it up right when FAWM is over! Blessings!
