We Got My Grandma Stuffed

Liner Notes
Well hello there all you possum lovers! This here song is 'bout my dear old Grandma. Her name was Emmylou Stinkbug but we always jes called her Grandma. Last year she got sqooshed under a Kenworth 18-wheeler (we kinda wished it woulda been a Peterbilt because that's funnier to say but you take what you get, ya know!) Well anyhoo, I don't wanna spoil the surprise of what happened to Grandma so here's that story in a new song called "We Got My Grandma Stuffed"!
Oh yeah, I wanna mention too, as all y'all know, family is very importent to our opossum clan! So this here song features my twin half-brother, on my father's side, twice removed, singing harmonious vocals! Y'all prolly heard of him, Budd Whole Opossum and you'll be hearing more about ol' Budd when I release my new song, The Ballad of Budd Whole Opossum! So stay tuned!
Lyrics
We Got My Grandma Stuffed February 7, 2025
one morning in December I will always remember how my grandma got runned over by a truck she was tryin' to cross the highway when much to her dismay a big ol' 18-wheeler changed her luck
we got my grandma stuffed and put her on the mantel dressed her up in red flannel lit a tiny tea light candle placed her next to grandpa so they'd always be together two dead possums stinkin' up the house forever
I tried to help my grandma but it clearly was her last hurrah I put her in a box and took her home we sent her to the taxidermist with a coupon we had purchased they stuffed her up and saved her funny bone
we got my grandma stuffed and put her on the mantel dressed her up in red flannel lit a tiny tea light candle placed her next to grandpa so they'd always be together two dead possums stinkin' up the house forever
now the moral to this story is to know your territory and crossing roads can really be quite rough if you insist on being a rover and you get yerself runned over we will dress you up and then we'll get you stuffed
we got my grandma stuffed and put her on the mantel dressed her up in red flannel lit a tiny tea light candle placed her next to grandpa so they'd always be together two dead possums stinkin' up the house forever two dead possums stinkin' up the house forever two dead possums stinkin' up the house forever

I just love those comical lyrics! and the contrast between the sad story and the super happy cheerful instrumentation. I get Weird Al Yankovic vibes from it.
All the lovely fiddle solos / improvs / instrumental parts add to this contrast. The background rhythm with the banjo and the soft percussion is just awesome and really sets the style. And it's VERY catchy. Earworm level catchy.
I also like how some lines end in very short words (truck, together, home, rough) which is kinda opposite of what I'd expect somehow.
You take Opossum Rock and make it Possumble. At one point in humanity it was Ompossumble. I love the homage to "Grandma Got Run over By A Reindeer", whether intentional or not. You whisked me back to my childhood regardless! Love the banjo and the tasteful strings. It's a story that demands attention, and you got mine. #tit4tat
I love the opossum rock so much! I’m mad at the truck not having the courage to be a peterbilt. And your twin twice removed had me laugh out loud which spooked my dog whose sleeping cuz he lazy.
RIP grandma glad you can still hang out with the family!
Thanks for your #tit4tat - I was drawn to look at this one because of the title and I'm glad I picked this up - you must have had so much fun with this and it's a great listen. Good story and banjo playing. Fiddle playing is superb.
Love the banjo and the violin here ! Still dig that hunor. My favorite rhyme : "if you insist on being a rover / and you get yerself runned over ".
Hahaha so glad #tit4tat led me here! love it, and the humour 😄
This is such fun to read and listen to. I also really like that the story has a moral!
Did you know your New Zealand cousins have very bushy tails - must be a song in that!
Thanks for coming by and reading :"Catch you later" .😊
#tit4tat.
Catch you next year!
Condolences for your loss. I’m sure your grandma was a lovely possum. Sounds like a good wake was had with lots of good music to get her into the next passage.
ha ha ha! The whole song from the introduction forward is absolutely delightful! Great fiddle and banjo! Poor grandma! Fabulous images!!!
well played and quite fun to listen to.
A wonderful set of lyrics! Well played, too. I think you will be the first person I follow.
Dear @opossum, Thanks for following me! I love what you do with possums! Yur fiddling and clip-clopping percussions work pretty good too. I wonder if you might consider doing a collaboration with me on my "Uncle Billy's Sing Frog" spoken word poem. It's actually a true story about my brother- in-law out in Ogletown, PA in the heart of Appalachia. Your voice would work better than mine. You might even look at my spoken word poem "Paleo Man's Dilemma. It is also a true story about a compelling and memorable dream I had in my youth
So touching. A wonderful tribute to your grandmother. I'm sure this will get you on the Grand Old Opry stage soon.
A cautionary tale! Glad grandma got to be next to grandpa on the mantle at least. It's kinda sweet albeit super sad. Loved Budd's harmonies. Glad you got those laid down before he went the way of the Orkin man.
Instant friggin classic. Possibly my favorite Ray D Opossum tune. Emmylou Stinkbug would be proud.
I think this is the bestest ole Ray has dunn yet!!! And Budd's harmonies were spot on and right enjoyable. Grandma was a nasty old scarfer anyway!! Hilarious stufft (typo intended) Brilliant writing (for an opossum)
Oh no! Sorry about your grandma but at least you got a good jam out of it!
Doesn’t get old, still fun! This is so funny, not taking away the real musical skill here! I laugh every time I visualise you with the banjo.
hilarious. so creative. an refreshing piece of original work. keep up the good work!
What a wonderful production. Best lyrical write I've seen this FAWM. Thanks for sharing.
How do those litter fingers play that banjo, let alone the fiddle, so well...amazingly talented group. That inter-generational or what ever genes are shining through on this song. Heee Hawww!
Haha, you continue to amaze and entertain me! SO. MUCH. FUN!
Well the chorus is an earworm, and I'm still cracking up from PANTLERS.. I'm gonna bust a gut if I don't get out of here. I can see this all unfolding and can't help but sway along. Really great music, aside from the humor.
Funny enough I pictured a whole human on the mantle, but of course, we're possums here! That makes this all make more sense.
