A Love Like We Had

Liner Notes
Not much to say about this one except that it is sad and I'm running out of gas. This one started as a few lyric notes and suddenly it was a song. Maybe not my best song but a song nonetheless!

someone forgot to tell those pretty songbirds to refrain from singing their happy melodies while I'm drowning in pain
the afternoon sun warmed me as I stumbled down the path found my seat, lost my mind the good things never last
today I cried for you and I guess I cried for me perhaps I cried for everyone who'll never get to see a love like we had a love like we had
the service went for an hour or two I can't remember much but I'll never ever forget how much I miss your touch
today I cried for you and I guess I cried for me perhaps I cried for everyone who'll never get to see a love like we had a love like we had
I held you you held me that's the way it's s'posed to be now I've got nowhere to go cause our home no longer feels like home to me
today I cried for you and I guess I cried for me perhaps I cried for everyone who'll never get to see a love like we had a love like we had a love like we had

At the beginning I was so sure this was a love who had left that the service hit me hard. I found I wanted the next line to tell me that the death was a while back - that this so fresh feeling grief is already years old. When I find myself tweaking lines in someone else’s song I know I’m completely hooked. The service went for an hour or two I guess it’s three years now. Of course you don’t need anyone rewriting your lines.
This is so stirring: "today I cried for you and I guess I cried for me" These lines feel so familiar [because I often do this], it's almost as if you've given voice to grief. The sense of loss is so palpable, I'm crying here.
Thank you for this wonderful work, I'm downloading this.
something in the air, more sad songs everywhere! got lots of the emotion of loss into this!
Very touching tribute song with obvious love abounding. Thanks for sharing the emotion. Some really impacting lyrics. Cheers
Amazing arrangement. Your vocals shine on these words. "The good things never last" is a "Sad But True" sort of thing that I've tried to see the positive side of. It's hard...but it's possible. I'm sorry that you've been through this, but I'm grateful for you sharing it with the world.
Maybe once the low hanging fruit is out of the way and we're running on fumes, our better creations can reveal themselves. Or at least different creations.
Anyway, I love the vocal tone and delivery; it sits beautifully over the flowing piano and plicky-plucky™ guitars. The enjambment (I think that's the word) between "...get to see"/"a love like we had" is wonderfully subtle.
The overall sentiment has echoes of Auden's "Stop All The Clocks", which is a lovely space to be in.
Sad, perhaps. I do find the first two lines of a chorus a humerous juxtaposition. The music is calming and steady but not too sad, it feels like an end credits scene of the main character walking back home. #tit4tat
When it comes to picking which song of yours to comment on for #tit4tat - it's hard! I like so many. I settled here because I was reading it and was caught unprepared by the line "the service went for an hour or two" - it was an almost jawdropping moment of understanding the song. Oh. You have other songs about painful relationships ( like Ice, my next pick) but this one is not that. As a reader/listener I think the sudden realization at that point in the song echoes the shock of love lost too soon. These lyrics are raw and beautiful. You have captured the reality of grief hitting home. The overwhelming intensity of it - I found my seat, I lost my mind..... Then for your delivery, youve chosen not to be as intense, its unexpectedly light - which I find a huge plus - it's very accessible for more people to relate to, and they will. I like this very much, all aspects of this song. Thank you for writing it. #tit4tat
Beautiful poignant song, such an amazing experience to listen to. Magical and sincere. Love the feel of nostalgia with your unique flavour, John. Gorgeous singing and playing.
This is a very lovely sound from the first notes. Really enjoyed it. Nice melancholy paean.
A sweet tribute and sad song. The feelings hit extra strong as a friend just posted a tribute to his wife that was gone from his life too soon. You captured loss well. Thank you! - Natalie
Yes it is sad, but it's also true. Somebody somewhere will hear this song and think: 'That guy understands how I feel. Not everyone does. He's captured it.' True things are always good. -- The music is smooth, the melody gentle and sure-footed, and your voice fits the song perfectly.
Oh, so so sad. You really make us feel it. The good things never last, never last long enough.
I am here for the sad songs! Beautiful instrumental track - so lush with the keys and guitars. Really pretty melody, and I love the slight lift in the chorus. Oh goodness this is really sad - lovely story telling here. Love how you use the title line in the song. Such a beautifully sad song.
Wow, John, this is so beautifully moving. The hook and chorus are compelling and haunting in the best way. The lyrics reach so deeply into my heart and your heartfelt tender vocals deliver the sentiment so gorgeously. Truly a wipe the tears from my eyes song!
