All Shall Be Well - a cappella 4-track Song 1

by @elainedimasi · @hornesgiftshop · @guitargabe · @ericalbert · @savvyaz

Liner Notes

Eric: The lyrics started when the couplet "All shall be well . . . // . . . last hotel" came to me. I first saw "all shall be well" in the gorgeous poem "Little Gidding" by T. S. Eliot. He got it from Julian of Norwich, a medieval anchoress whose writings are the earliest surviving English-language works attributed to a woman. Other things from her writings, such as the hazelnut, are sprinkled through the lyrics.

Lyrics

The wildness of this winter brings down branches from the trees We maunder through the darkness in our tempest and dis-ease Where walking's almost falling, and falling's almost death The only warmth, a neighbor’s window ghosted by our breath

We kneel beneath a lamppost on a piece of frozen land We rise to find a hazelnut lies sheltered in our hand A little thing, a little thing, as simple as goodbye And yet it holds a field of corn beneath a summer sky

All shall be well, and all shall be well,
When we meet at last in that last hotel
We will nod and smile while we wait in line
We will check our things and our me and mine

We'll gather round the table with its phrases carved with care We'll place our favorite orders and we'll say a simple prayer In the manner of our making, in the love with which we're cast We will recognize each other and we'll know our place at last

All shall be well, and all shall be well,
When we meet at last in that last hotel
We will lay us down in that endless bed
With a heart of sleep and a peaceful head

All shall be well

Right (thank you @nancycunning ) now the sound's working for me. What a spectacular auditory experience! (already commented on the lyric). Makes me wish I could sing! Espeially the All Shall Be Well series: it's a serious bar-room quintet in the old style, wonderful! APPLAUSE!! (what a great last hurrah for my FAWM listening!) And the musicianship displayed by you all--tack a serious pat on the back!

Oh this is so rich and lush and lovely!!! The lyrics are so beautifully poetic with so many wonderful sensory images! The chorus is so warm and brilliant. The melody is gorgeous and the harmony layers create such warmth.

Oh, my goodness - to think I could have missed this one. It is so amazing. Like a whole spiritual history of the earth. I just want to listen to it over and over again. This old gospely feeling, this ancient chanting, and that moderner sliding. It’s like an advertisement for heaven. @timfatchen - the sound is working now. I hope you get to hear it.

Eric: I gave up the fight a week ago and I'm now waiting for a volume of Julian's writings to arrive in the postbox. Much to my rage, the player isn't working, so this is on the lyrics only: AND I wish I'd seen this lyric two weeks ago (wasn't following skirmishes) because I would have rushed in and...umm..as a mod I'm not allowed to run off with people's lyrics, but I would have begged most prettily, beautifully and convincingly to set this...

Reminds somewhat of steeleye span's 'all around my hat' or at least the first part of it...and also seems to have somewhat medieval feel.

Some lovely lyrics and well put together.

Very medieval sound and beautiful harmonies. I love the discord on death and goodbye in particular - makes the words of sadness really stand out and the last section is really good. #tit4tat

This captures something akin to a sing-along at a Tudor inn, everyone singing with gusto after a few tankards of ale, finding their parts and even improvising tags and responses, in true folkloric style, recalling a hazardous journey when safely around a table before a roaring fire. At the same time, it has some modern touches: 'we'll check our things and our me and mine' -- lovely line! 'Where walking's almost falling, and falling's almost death' -- superb poetry! Love the description of a hazelnut as a little thing, 'as simple as goodbye'. Lots of gems here.

Wow, this is gorgeous. I love acapella and you guys smashed it. The lyrics are well written and beautiful. I agree with @robheron1 , this would be lovely at a funeral. Superb collab!

Stunning! Those lyrics are gorgeous and timeless and some much-needed comfort during this rocky time. This feels like the song that all the regulars at the local tavern sing on particularly jovial nights. Harmonies gave me chills, love all the unique voices working together so beautifully. The arrangement has so many wonderful parts; the unexpected note on the last word of the third line, call-and-response, key change... that chorus made my heart swell. Downloaded this one so I feel obliged to say "yoink!"... and thank you. 💚

Lovely! There are lots of intriguing lines and images in there. Nice change of pace in the "all shall be well" part. As a life-long non-singer, I'm always a little in awe before things of this sort

[avatar]

That's really good. Congrats to you all! The lyric is nice and hopeful and I hope it's not too much of a contradiction to say it could be sung at a funeral. Nicely executed vocals, with some challenging harmony changes..like the 'almost death' line. I love the highlighted 'All shall be well' line. I think a key change at the end even! Thanks!

A beautiful lyric, and I like the unexpected melodic turns that resolve back to safe places. But really, I love this for the magic of voices singing together. Human and joyful.

[avatar]

this has such a traditional folk feel, carol-like, a nice mix of voices and i like the way it sometimes weaves and sometimes moves in blocks in the more hymnal chorus. I like the unexpected progression at times. the way it grows and develops in the last chorus. very rousing! cool backstory of the lyrics so this feels like a tribute song too. great collaboration!

Wonderful lyrics! I very much enjoyed the four part harmony! Delightful! - Natalie

[avatar]

Beautiful poetic lyric and a very talented group of singers and kudos to the stitcher of all things too. Yes! 📝🎶

Woah! I would love to hear this performed live, with you all standing on a piece of frozen land, beneath a lamp post. Ideally, I would be inside where it's warm, maybe with the window cracked open a bit hear you. Seriously, it's got a wonderful Dickensian vibe, full of classic literaturish imagery. It would fit in very well on a Steeleye Span album. And it truly leaves me with the feeling that all SHALL be well!

[avatar]

What a beautiful madrigal sound! I especially loved every time you launched into the All Shall Be Well chorus, which is a beautiful phrase all by itself. Bravo!

[avatar]

In doing this project, I learned a lot, especially from Eric and Gabe. Eric provided a lyric to which a lot of musical depth could be applied, and Gabe with a compelling melody and lots of distinct music sections supported that lyric really well. Thanks for the experience of this, all!

[avatar]

Wow. What you four did with my words is amazing! Nothing like I expected. Thank you so much for the care you put into your melodies and singing. I'm touched. And thanks again to @elainedimasi for her wrangling of all this.

@wynia

Immediate caroling vibe! I think this might be the first vocal a capella I’ve seen on FAWM and it’s really tickling my fancy! Some really interesting harmonies in here! Was there an intentional nod to Julian of Norwich with the “all shall be well” line?

[avatar]

God I LOVE how this came out! I haven't seen this since it was just a melody, and you all really did something beautiful with it. Thanks, everyone!

@savvyaz

Stunning!! It turned out so pretty! Thank you, everyone. :)

@beacon

Awesome job! Some really cool chords too and a key change!!!!!!! Very inventive, and the singing is quite tight. This was worth waiting for, and very ambitious. You can tell you all had a good time with this!

[avatar]

Fantastic! Love how you coordinated some non-obvious harmonies and a modulation. Wonderful use of sustained notes, echoes and doubling. The lyric is well suited to a vocal ensemble, too. I'm learning how the first-person plural shapes these pieces ....
