I Can Write A Hat At The Drop Of A Song
by @b3nut
Liner Notes
I was playing off the idea of writing a song at the drop of a hat, and mixed it up as is my inclination LOL...I wanted to try a quasi-Beatle-y chord progression but kinda messed it up in my own way, but this was fun!
I wasn't happy with last night's vocal track so I fixed some lyrics and redid it, and replaced the Modern kit in EZ Drummer with the Vintage kit....should have picked that one from the get go! Oh well... ;)
But the larger point...making art is the highest expression of what it means to be human...it's what makes us human. Celebrate it! My noisemakers: EZ Drummer Fender Jazz Bass Squier Classic Vibe 60's Jazzmaster Taylor 314ce acoustic Roland XP-80 (with Vintage Synths card, has the Mellotron flute and string samples on it) Hammond B-3/Leslie Vocals
Lyrics
Sun is up, the coffee’s on Another day about to start - muse awakens inside I wander into my magic room No telling what the day will bring - just come along for the ride
No preconceptions or specific plans I’m just gonna roll - I can write a hat at the drop of a song Project my heart into the air Hoping I can spread a bit of love - I hope it don’t come out wrong
Turning thoughts and ideas into sound It’s intoxicating To take that soul flight into the universe Liberating
Find inspiration everywhere, could be good, it could be bad Sharing all of life is a part of the game We share our sorrows, share our joys, and share our fears Expression of the joy, contemplation and pain
Turning thoughts and ideas into sound It’s intoxicating To take that soul flight into the universe Liberating
Turn your mind and heart towards the light A life worth sharing Our wounded world is in dire need To make art is daring
A soul in tune with the world, the light of nature’s grace Willing to give it full voice There is no more deeply human expression, it’s the soul’s life’s work Making vital art is the obvious choice
Turning thoughts and ideas into sound It’s intoxicating To take that soul flight into the universe Liberating
Elevating our shared humanity Joy of creating No fuller manifestation can be found Of human Being.

I've been meaning to listen to this song ever since you brought it up in the zoom a few weeks ago, and here I finally am! I can't believe it took me this long, I've been missing out!! Those chords, as well as the overall production, are tasty. And the guitar solo navigates that progression with aplomb. "Making vital art is the obvious choice" YES. I just want to listen to this on repeat and drive through the desert with the top down.
Could be the FAWM theme song! The title line grabs you but the whole thing has a great message and the music is fire.
Yes! Rock and roll at the purest. Just enough of the Beatle chord progression vibe to offer a nod and go your own way. Great tones all around. Many truths in the lyrics. I like the mix of longer vocal notes mixed with the quicker lines.
Thats one of my favourites from you this year. I love the chord progression and the vocal melody is good
Ok, damn. I thought I'd just randomly pick a couple of your songs to check out while trying to do a little payback. The first one I heard was extraordinary. Next, I stumble upon this borderline masterpiece like something off a long-lost record by (aaarggh! The band's name is on the tip of my brain) and realize everybody else is just gonna have to wait while I work through your whole list. Clearly, there's an embarrassment of undiscovered (by me anyway) talent in this little FAWMworld. Need more than half a March for listening!!!
Another absolutely killer song! Powerful message sung with soaring conviction. Love it!
I agree, the joy of creating IS intoxicating. Great lyric that, I'm sure, all musicians and artists can relate to. I really like the full, rich sound of this song. Sounds professional. Great melody and performance. Really great song!
To make art is daring, indeed. Great song.
Really digging how this one gains momentum, and the deft handling of dense lyrics into neat melodies, it’s also got the fresh “how are they pulling this off?!” feeling of an improvised piece and so it’s a fun listen too
What a wicked chord progression! So revolutionary in this day of 4 chord monotony. I love the key changes, too. It is intoxication to make music. I like to think of myself as a musicvore - someone who lives from the nourishment of music. This is definitely the meat and potatoes of that for me.
Wasn't expecting a song with cool chord progressions and a nice vocal melody with a title like that! Mix sounds really good here.
This feels so liberating and free; just listening to it inspires me and makes me want to stop procrastinating by listening to others' songs (as wonderful as they are!) and get back to creating my own. Thank you for the musical, toe-tapping, groove-filled kick in the pants!
I agree with all my esteemed Fawmers below - the opening chord progression is as hooky as freakin' hell! I could listen to this all day, mate! Brilliant!! 🙌😍
Making my bed this morning listening to this song made me feel like I was involved in an epic human endeavor. I want to put this on my inspirational playlist called “Go Ahead and Write Another Song” The song itself feels like a masterclass in contrast and leaving space and singing like you mean it - and for all the things the instrumental part can make you feel.
Dreamy progression! Very cool take on the transposition of that phrase. Transposition? Or spoonerism? I'm not sure lol. But great write to make a song out of it! Very smooth production, it sounds so good!
Love that progression! That alone will lead you interesting places. There’s so much going on and you balance layers so well. Great topic and fun delivery! I enjoyed this one a lot.
Very cool chord changes! It's especially satisfying when it finally resolves to the 'I' chord on the word 'sound' in the chorus - gives that key word a lot of weight. I agree: creating is the closest thing to being godlike, fulfilling our destiny.
Didn't really hit the Beatles progression here and thats great. I usually go for the first listen on fawm song without reading the notes. And my first though was that the chord progression felt really good. Bit more speed and you would be in some weird brit pop-Cardiacs place. Well done! When everything is this well done it opens doors to gripe about the small things, the bass drum snap was a real turn off for me. It really pushed through the whole mix. But mixing real drums is a pain in the ass, and with a schedule. Ooff.
Beautiful and inspiring words. The chord choices are ace, I especially enjoyed the long descent going out. As always, I enjoy the full and rich sound that you create with the Hammond organ and the bass work is remarkable as well.
couldn't miss out on that title. Great intro! my type of song! sort of stuff I bought plenty of once! was my regular evening listening. awesome guitar! top stuff mate.
Really enjoyed this, its a really good song! - turning thoughts and ideas into sound is very intoxicating. Particularly enjoyed your bass playing
nice! this is appropriately just Beatle-y enough, with great instrumentation and arrangement- fun lyric and performance too- a fine soul-meta -slightly-psychedelic journey, and a mission statement for all of us. (and I was inspired a bit by your 'im going back in the studio' line at that tuesday chat- i did the same thing myself, tho for far more modest results.)
oh and, what a great title!
How could I resist a title like this – and the song itself turns out to be a total groove. Love the progression.
