◼︎◼︎◼︎◼︎ TAPE 7 for the #Cassette #4Track #Collab challenge! https://write.fawm.org/forums/2947

T1: @peccary - bass T2: @nancyrost - electric piano T3: @yarimurray - electric guitar T4: @burr - drums

burr says: this tape arrived TODAY, so i decided to turn it around ASAP! i'm not really sure what kind of life it lived before it got to me, but i had a hard time figuring out what to do with it. everyone else's parts were super-awesome, but there didn't appear to be a click track anywhere (maybe it was accidentally erased?), and tracks 1+2 were really quiet — i could barely hear them even cranked all the way on my deck, so i had some macgyvering to do...

i "cheated" a bit. i imported tracks 1-3 into logic and used plugins to boost volume and clean things up a bit. while i was in there i tried to use logic's "smart tempo" to find the BPM and make a click track for me, but to no avail... it couldn't really make consistent sense of it either. i decided to be brave and make a stereo mix back to the deck with the bass panned left, piano right, and drone guitar sweeping randomly from side to side.

then i recorded live e-drums in stereo on the other two tracks. amazingly, i did it in only 3 or 4 segments, punching in where i lost my way. it's not perfect, but it's OK and better than i thought i could do under the circumstances. i could only lock on for 4-8 bars at a time, so the drums are kinda stop-and-go, but hopefully that adds to the sonic interest a bit? dumped everything back in to logic, dirtied up the drums a little more with a distortion plugin, and added some plate reverb in the final mix to glue things together.

to me, the final result feels a little bit #AvantJazz like "on the corner" era miles davis, but filtered through #IndieRock #Instrumental groups like "unwed sailor" — so that's why i titled the piece the way i did.

This kept me company through some drudging computer work. Like a sea shanty for the laptop class. Interesting without being distracting.

Late night lounging if not actually lounge. (Oh how hungrily I looked at teh 4-track Tascams lo these many yers ago!) Gentle and sleepy feel to this, i'd be happy to own it. A challenge that ended up sounding like an organic whole.

Really cool, atmospheric sound. One of the fun things about this challenge is how setbacks can turn into strengths and that sounds like the case here! Really fun listen.

The slightly janky tempo kinda works in your favor, there's an organic vibe that makes me want to get real high on the couch while y'all jam on the other side of the garage. There's movement, groove, and interest the whole way through. Great work, y'all.

The last few of these 4 track collabs I've heard make me nostalgic for the 4 track I wanted years ago but never had.

@cts

For all the Frankenstein-ing you had to do to complete this, the end product is very good. Good move to pan things L&R the overall mix has more color and clarity (I have a feel for all instruments involved). Interestingly enough, this reminds me of a demo this cat I knew who worked at Toys R Us with me in the early 90s let me hear. It was the first time I heard a song recorded with a 4 track recorder. My world was rocked! This rocks! We're all rock solid! Peace! Haha...but lest I forget the other contributors to this piece. Peccary, Yari and Nancy...y'all held it down like jazz pieces should. That's what's up!

No click track and drums last 😮 Could have fooled me, the piano and guitar weave together beautifully. I feel like I am about to enter bat country 😎

Dang, this is taking me places…. Awesome production on this guy!

@wynia

It’s a whole mood. My favorite thing is the organ/keys. Just vibin’ and hanging out. Also really like the effect of the occasional clip, it works in this soundscape

[avatar]

Oh wow this has a serious mood! I like the way that everything demands its own space but also plays nicely in a really groovy way. Mind altering in a way. Love it!

@cathreu

Woah. Those vibey keys and grinding phased guitar are great. The drums hit hard. This has such a solid groove. Very ambient and spacious, while the drums and keys keep pushing us forward. I love when it breaks into an expansive wash here and there. Great work!

…the hard work was absolutely worth it - this very nice piece reminds me from its vibe to pieces i heard in the last quarter of the last century in London ‚underground‘ bars - well done…i‘d say the comment classifying this as ‚avantgarde‘ is not wrong 😉…

This is a great piece! I agree that it's reminiscent of jazz, so it's well-named. That electric piano really does give off some avant-guard vibes, and a bit of fusion too. The bass and guitar create a great bed for the piano and the drums sound great, especially given the technical limitations that @burr talked about. Well done, all.

What a chilled out cool sounding tune! Lots of interesting textures with the drone guitar being broken up by the gritty drum breaks and grooving bass. Interesting to read afterwards this was due to the click track being lost along the way, and borne out of a struggle to follow the backing track.

It’s come together a treat though and loving the warm tapey tones, great stuff everyone!

Wow! Amazing recovery without a click track and with such disparate levels. I wondered about the click track and just went with a drone guitar with an interesting effect so I could stay in time with the other tracks. Funny story. I just realized my tape machine was set on high instead of normal so I recorded my track at double speed without knowing it (I thought the song was a little short). I think it adds some mystery to the shimmering drone guitar and the panning sweep adds even more intrigue. Well done everyone and I'm proud to have been a part of it!

Love the title. It does feel kinda avant-jazz, which fits with drums that are more give-and-take than backbeat. Yep, oops, didn't see the click was on track 2 and recorded my part there, mystery solved! I appreciate the thought and effort that went into finishing a puzzle of a tape!

@peccary

Holy smokes, that was GOOD!

I had the idea to send a pretty traditional chord structure on guitar and when I want to record it I pulled out my Jazz bass, which I almost never play, and this little droning riff came to me, and that's what I went with. I'm glad I canned the chords!

@burr I put the click on track two, so it's possible/likely it got recorded over before it got to you. I didn't make a note on that, my bad. But if I remember correctly it was recorded 4/4 at 130 bpm.

I don't know what's up with the levels, though. That's wacky. I have a tendency to push it too hard, usually.

You recovered incredibly, though! Playing drums without any ideas of the time is just nuts - well done!

And the electric guitar and piano are killing it! I just really love everything about this song and can't believe I'm a part of something so rad.

Thank you all who contributed to this, I'm super pumped to have been a part of this song and I can't believe what you all did with this and how much I love it.

I remember listening back to that bass line after playing it and thinking "You've been listening to a lot of Young Marble Giants lately, haven't you?" 😂

I feel like that tracks with the path this took and how it finished.

@nancyrost I think that the click being recorded over was fated and that the world is better for it.

What a cool vibe! I am really digging the eclectic avant garde feel of this one. The drum breaks add a ton and really give it some sections. But as others have said, this could have been planned from the start - way to overcome technical difficulties and create new art. Fun song!!

This is wild. Demonstrative of the magic of the FAWM 4 track collab

@george

yeah, this is coooooooool ....

[avatar]

I agree with @beto, this all feels planned. This made the perfect soundtrack to the final exchange in the chess game I just won.

@beto Mod

Oh, my! I like listening to the song before reading the liner notes, and I would not guess that this was not planned. Great way of tying everything up, it's an amazing atmosphere — I would love to listen to a full album from this band.

@tspoon
