Mission To Mars
by @davidtaro
Liner Notes
A friend recently posited a theory that Elon Musk's end game was to amass ALL the world's wealth and then hop off to Mars. While I don't necessarily agree (I'm on the fence), it struck me as a decent angle for a song. The lyrics spilled out in the space of about half an hour on Sunday morning, but I had to wait a few days to book time in with the orchestra š I'm once again leaning heavily into my love of Randy Newman here... (thank you, Randy).
Lyrics
Iām on a mission to Mars Gonna see me some stars If this planetās gonna snuff it Iām better hopping off it But the money is tight You see, itās not just the flight Iāll need a colony too In a style that Iām accustomed to And that aināt cheap, bro But I really wanna go
Aināt disingenuous To call me a genius You think itās easy making friends Try being in the 0.001 percent Itās always bugged me That no oneās ever really loved me But, hey, I love myself And take some comfort in enormous wealth Because Mars aināt cheap, bro And I really wanna go
So I made me some green With a business or sixteen Each one makes you corrupter Itās cool to be the great disruptor You can always stand tall When you own the townhall Just modify the algorithm āTil suddenly you are the system Because Mars aināt cheap, bro If you really must know
{Kazoo solo performed by Mark Zuckerberg}
Oh, trying to keep this smile from off my face āCause when the Lamestream News gets hold of it Theyāre guaranteed to lose theirā¦
Now thereās a plan in place Iāve got my rockets in space Found a pretty dumb mark Have you heard the thing about the sharks? Now Iām a parasite Hiding in plain sight Preaching efficiency When really itās just cash for me Because Mars aināt cheap, bro And pretty soon I gotta go
So goodbye

David - this one feels like it should be one of the singles along with last FAWMās song about leaving earth with the rest of the oil barons on an album where Ziggy Stardust and Randy Newman orbit the earth nd record a live show. I love how your brain delivers these incredible concepts and your orchestra shows up wi th the chops to deliver.
Haha. This is great. I love the serious and grandiose building feel mixed with the clever and humorous lyrics. I laughed over and over at the wordplay, little references and clever lines. Fun but too much truth. ;) Zuckerberg on kazoo! Mars aināt cheap⦠bro! Good bye! šš¶
The kazoo solo performed by Zuckerberg :D I love the satire it is very spot on. Fun and at the same time poignant. Great!
This is a great song. The perfect t ending for a musical or album. I habe so much fun in the Bridge. Especially the kazoo solo. the problem with a Mars mission is that you need a colony right? I have so much fun!
Glad to see you finally got onto the important topics this FAWM! I'm sure you could write a song about anything, David, and I like to think you've got a notebook that you take everywhere with you jotting down increasingly bizarre ideas for songs. Beautiful pianoing, and hats off to Mark for finding the time to drop some kazoo for you.
Somehow orchestra and kazoo are symbolic of this entire enterprise. Fantastic Newmanesque lyrics, killer rhymes and irony.
This is so right up my alley I can't even tell you. 100% getting the Randy Newman thing - this is about the closest thing I've ever heard to Political Science. I was laughing out loud at the "naught point naught naught one percent" and absolutely love the kazoo solo and the ad lib lyrics underneath. I actually had kazoo on one of my tunes this year and pulled it off because I didn't think it worked, but it works flawlessly here. So you've inspired me to give it another try next FAWM. Great, great work! Looking forward to hearing more of your stuff next time around!
Love this so much. The "aināt cheap, bro" refrain throughout is absolutely hilarious. This provides so much comic relief from my constant despair from reading the news.. The last verse is my fav, though the whole damn thing is so clever. Geez, man. I don't know how you do it!
That is a great take. The thought of someone taking all the money to be alone in a place where money will be as valuable as toilet paper is just so hilarious to meā¦a king of nothing type story. Youāre a mad musical genius dude, constantly just blow my mind and leave my jaw on the disgusting floor. And that kazoo goes in.
this is incredible. you do this style so well. nice piano playing. sweet kazoo solo! i enjoyed that you made the kazoo sort of talk like it was gizmo from gremlins or something. nice touch there. such a cool song
Hey! Randy inspiration! Let's deffo throw on some Randy records together some time :) you're nailing that conversational delivery and the swelling chord structures! Loving that rhythmic March of the guitar. That kazoo solo is just genius! "Blow Zuckerberg blow" is inspired š you really nail the villainous tone. You are striking hit after hit this year. I love: "You think itās easy making friends. Try being in the 0.001 percent. Itās always bugged me. That no oneās ever really loved me" incredible track man
Great idea for a song! Clever lyrics and great choice of instrumentation. I hear the Randy Newman influence you mentioned but also a bit of Tom Waits - you canāt choose better inspiration for a song like this. Great job!!!
somehow those slightly corny lines are just right for this. I had this vision of the man himself singing it. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry, i choose laugh! well.now the kazoo is in its obvious laugh! very clever
You might have won the coveted [prize to be decided] with this song. Excellent stuff with magnificent kazoo.
Man that's hilarious. Great tune. Glad the orchestra could make the gig. Blow Zuckerberg blow!
Haha, this is great. Some cracking lines, and clever rhymes. And what a cracking solo! He's welcome to go there as soon as he likes...
Such Randy Newman vibes (in the best possible way). So many great lines, among which are "Iāll need a colony too/ In a style that Iām accustomed to" and "Just modify the algorithm/ āTil suddenly you are the system." This is perfect.
This hits close to home. I wrote a song last week about this with a different, more direct take :). I appreciate this vantage point. Love the Zuckerberg kazoo solo - hah! And then the little kazoo riffs after that seem to say, āwhat!?!ā, āam I still important!?!ā The full orchestra backing your vocals is perfect. Thank you for writing this. It is good not to feel alone.
If Randy Newman and Ringo Starr had a musical love child, it would likely be this song. HILARIOUS!!! This is such a hoot! Bravo!!!
This just gets better and better and better with each unfolding line. The lyrics are sardonic AF and I can only imagine the ocular twinkle going on as you recorded them. Love the mid 8 break "Lamestream News" is brilliant, and the little modesty jump into the last verse is perfectly timed. Great playing throughout too. And the arrangement. The crash into "Have you heard the one about the sharks" is just superb.
And Marky Mark on kazoo really lets his joy out doesn't he? Inspired.
For me this is easily your FAWM 25 zenith. Or maybe it's just my favourite. Here's to Randy!
hehehe i listened to this while i was washing up so didnt see who the brilliant soloist was! Still had me smiling though all the way through, what a delight. yeah all the asides are so well placed, great pitch, not in the musical sense (or the football sense) great stuff as ever!
I didnāt even see your liner notes and was three tones in when I thought Randy Newman! Nailed it! āMars aināt cheap broā - genius hilarious hook. And a KAZOO solo, I lost it. Yeah marky mark! Loved all of this š
Pure joy listening to this. Half and hour? Man you are good. Such a wonderful production and composition. Favorite part has to be the Zuckerberg kazoo solo and your little asides. Although, that's just barely ahead of hearing you sing those lines that end in "bro". This is a ten out of ten on every judging category. Maybe an 11 in humor and entertainment...
Howling with laughter. "If this planetās gonna snuff it / Iām better hopping off it" is worthy of Randy Newman himself. Wonderful stuff!
This is genius! Had me proper giggling, and how did you get hold of Zuck?! He's a busy guy I heard... your vocals and musicianship are outstanding! Brilliant pieces of musical satire.
