Confidence Is King

Liner Notes

David says: I had the chorus for this one floating about at the start of the month, and it seemed to demand a #reggae treatment, which is sadly outside of my skillset. But that's ok, because this is FAWM, where you get to rope in talented folk like @oddbod, who provided not only an awesome reggae arrangement but also the verse music, several of the lyrics and - most excitingly of all... #tinwhistle!! It's been really fun bouncing this one back and forth, and hopefully that's reflected in the final #collab!

Thematically, it's another rather tongue-in-cheek, post-truth #lifecoaching #satire for my children (I did something similar last 50/90). I wish I didn't have to keep writing these...

Lyrics

Gracious child Meek and mild Hide your light under a bush Do what’s right So polite You don’t hustle, you don’t push But your morality Won’t help you climb the tree Let me tell you what it’s really like

Be confident, because confidence is king Say it with authority and you’ll always take ‘em in Some losers will believe whatever lies you spin So be confident, because confidence is king

If you fib Then go big Be outrageous, be absurd Say it loud Say it proud After all they’re only words Don’t be emotional The truth’s negotiable Don’t get hung up on what’s fair and right

Be confident, because confidence is king Say it with authority and you’ll always take ‘em in Some losers will believe whatever lies you spin So be confident, because confidence is king

Now you’ve got To the top And you’re taking in the view The world is sweet When it’s at your feet People dancing to your tune (tune tune) Who needs to walk the walk When you can talk the talk All you really need to do in life is…

Be confident, because confidence is king Say it with authority and you’ll always take ‘em in Some losers will believe whatever lies you spin So be confident, because confidence is king Be confident, because confidence is king Be confident, because confidence is king

Love the reggae treatment. There are too many actual truths in this one… unfortunately. And tin whistle solo is icing. Arrangement is tops. Super fun. I am afraid that this will accidentally become an anthem for the wrong people. Haha.

What a full sound, amazing arrangement and oh so fresh. Is there any style you're not willing to take on @oddbod? Great message too, except perhaps encouraging the kids the lie! Nailed the reggae vocal too, and all the little in between 'Woahs' and lead ups to melodic lines are a nice touch. Fun collab gents!

Ah, this is lovely. Warm buoyant arrangement to help the smartly satirical lyrics go down, and I really layayike the vocal approach. Definite bonus marks for the tin whistle. David & Tim live band for next FAWM?

Oh dude…yes…this is tight. Closer to strummer than sublime with the pop sensibilities of ub40 but with sweeter vocals and your horns are wonderful…and that flute/recorder thing is soooo cool. This gives me the strength to go out in the world today

clever lyric. this is classic regaae and I know my regaae. so well done! some lovely musical touched including thr trumpets/ horns. good message super rippling.

A refrain we should all take to heart for sure! But even when paddling in genres you're not immediately comfortable with you should have confidence because you always put so much heart and invention into everything you do, and they're always a joy to listen to. Love the tin whistle in this. Love the chromatic up and step down modulation in the chorus, which I'm now thinking of as "trademark Taro". And, and... just all the little bits that kept me smiling from beginning to end.

incredible that you were able to do a reggae song and still make it sound very much you. that is impressive.

love the “let me tell you what it’s really li-ii-iii-iiiike” thing you do. very nice. the “tune (tune tune)” part was a real nice touch. and that chorus is on point, as usual

There's a real swaggering beauty in two white boys pulling off an infectious reggae jam about confidence. What's the Etsy totebag? "Carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre white man." Not that either of you is mediocre, it's just a perfect illustration of the song's central point, a theorem that proves itself.

I love the multi-syllabic delivery of the word before the chorus, I love the tin whistle, I love the sad-but-true life lesson that confidence really is king. It opens doors for us, and, once you know the trick, it can help you to spot a charlatan. Or, well, it should help spot a charlatan. But the charlatans are so confident, let's make them king...

Not joking about that tin whistle. It slaps! This is a big huge beautiful mix. The catchyness of the chorus is almost too much. Hell to the yea folks

@b3nut

Are we allowed to dance in our cubicles? Because I totally was. ;) Fun, upbeat, bright and sunny tune! Nice work!!

I do love some reggae--did a "reggae-influenced" (at least I thought so) song myself earlier this year, that folks didn't hear any "reggae" in. Oh, well--you definitely can hear it in this one! Nice job!! ❤️

I actually love this lol. That tin whistle is key! As is the melody on "confidence is key". Here's hoping my son never relates to my music 😅🤣

This is an instant sing-along dance party, so catchy...ebullient really. Love the tin whistle, though mentioning the tin whistle sort of gives short shrift to the horns and all the rest of the delightful adornments. Hats off

DT, nothing is outside your wheelhouse…Well, at least I haven’t seen it yet. Such a fun song. Love the raggae style, particularly those catchy guitar lines that tie this all together so nicely. Great vocal performance and message. No doubt though that the tinwhistle is what steels the show. That fact will not be disputed!!!

@sbs

So much truth in this … sadly! Excellent production!

@nadine

Which parallel universe did I enter, where @davidtaro and @oddbod do Reggae? And a tinwhistle that actually works in this arrangement o.O You even managed the typical percussion / snare. And the slight bluesy treatment in Davids phrasing brings some fresh wind. Now I'm feeling better thanks!

@trebled

The sad truth wrapped up in an insanely catchy reggae masterpiece. Loving the tin whistle too! Great work guys - love it! :-)
