Liner Notes
1st track for FAWM '25! Excited to get out there with y'all and get another project done and dusted!
Last year after my first FAWM I hunkered down and decided to write an album trilogy about Nostalgia, Regret, and Loss, alongside the seasons I release them in. For 50/90 I completed my summer album (Memory Ln.) and my Autumn Album (One Step Forward & The Quiet Drive Back), and that leaves me with one final piece: the sad, mopey, introspective Winter album. My apologies for the upcoming month if I get too whingy.
I want this project to be about grief and trauma, love and loss, and moving through it all. This song in particular is just a sort of thesis statement for the whole thing and I hope it functions well as an opener. It's always hard to start things. Or end them. Or do any of the middle parts.
Anyways, this is also a sister song to a track called "waves // deeper" off of the first album in this trilogy, Memory Ln. There are a lot of references back and forth and wholesale lines from other songs in the trilogy and I just assume that's how this is going to be for the rest of the project, so I hope it doesn't get too "Snake Eating It's Own Tail"-y.

I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's work this month! Excited to be back! I'm also going to try to put tags on my songs this year, despite being one of those people who hates labeling anything lol
Lyrics
Verse: Here come the waves Pulling us deeper, Out from the shore And into abyss.
The rest of our days Dancing in darkness With phantom limb. (Days Darker)
No one will say It ever gets easy. You learn to move on With a hole in your life.
It never lets go, It just gets familiar, Like bumps in the night.
Pre-Chorus: For all the walls that we built And the calls we ignored, Conversations we could have had That we can't anymore,
We're the effect and the cause Of the sickness and the cure, So what is this for?
Chorus: These are the nights that I remember In late December When I'm stuck in my head.
(Deeper than the waves that pulled me down)
I know these thoughts are gonna kill me, The way they fill me, With a deep, dark dread.
(Darker than the days underground)

so many compelling vocal approaches throughout this song, and i love the spooky piano and the old cracked lp effect. the lyrics are so close to home, as my wife died last year and i am still ravaged by it, now bringing up my 9 year old daughter alone, and today is the first day i have been without my daughter, as she is taking her spring break in peru to visit her grandmother. her aunt took her there as i could not bear to return to that place that is haunted by her memory, this song explains why i can never go back there. https://write.fawm.org/songs/308794
Maaaaan this arrangement is incredible, but I have to mention upfront that your vocals are incredible! Your phrasing and stresses on these lyrics really kept me engaged. Lots to take in and this song definitely requires more than one listen. I'm going to swing back around and take another pass. This is an excellent find!
Damn, this is wonderfully deep and dark. I am just LOST in this song. It carries you along on waves of emotion. So, so good. One of the best I've heard all month. No word of a lie.
This is so my cup of tea! I would listen to this and wouldn’t sound out of place on one of my Bon Iver style playlists. So full of menace in the music but the sweet high vocals make it beautiful. Great unexpected heavy build to the crescendo. Awesome track! #tit4tat
I think the song perfectly functions as the kind of opener you were shooting for. The lyrics articulately express the theme (I particularly like "You learn to move on/With a hole in your life." The music matches them well. Great performance and production as well. Really well done.
What wonderful vocals. Feels like the lyrics are tearing you apart. The restless droning lead line in the background is quite something! Hard to put finger on. Mystical, insistent maybe a little provocative. Everything on top of very melancholic instrumentation. Quite a multilayered song.
I’m listening to this on a Monday morning at work and it fits my mood as I’m about to respond to the DOGE email about 5 things I did last week to feed into their AI. So that’s my mood as I listen to this awesome piece and your vocal. It’s perfect for today. I really like the production. The mix of metaphors confused me a little - waves, walls, etc. - but that didn’t really bother me since it was the phrasing of the words that gave me some comfort as I deal with stuff. #tit4tat
Damn, this is Very Cool! Awesome production bringing all of these elements together coherently and delightfully! My God, your vocals are outstanding! And all of the different layers with different effects make this a sonic treat to listen to! The instrumentation is also quite lovely and more than a little fascinating with all of the layers. This is truly Something Special!!! I enjoyed experiencing it quite a lot! #tit4tat
Great production. I felt like I was being immersed in a world.
Wow that vocal is really beautiful. The performance and the effects. The doubling and the ones more set back. Production is sharp and solid. Nice work.
really atmospheric. Can totally lose myself in this song. Impressive!
@howthenightcame I know Mike Patton, I never heard those projects though! I'll have to check em out. That's extremely kind to compare me to him, the guy is legendary and I wish I had that operatic range. Thank you for the listen as usual!
Well, now, that is an entire mood. There's something sort of... viscerally, almost physically textural here. I turned the lights all the way down about 30 seconds in. I can feel this on my skin and in my bones.
Such a great production and soundscape. Haunting!
This is amazing. No other words to find for it. Amazing. Great work.
this is gorgeous, really warm with lots of emotional currents swirling under the surface. you cover a lot of ground in a short time, but everything hangs together
i instantly got some smooth mike patton vibes from this track - then you came in with a "speakerphone" effect on your vocals, and it was a done deal!! do you know patton's projects - LOVAGE and PEEPING TOM? you might like those...
Love you built up so much atmosphere and the vocal layers keep changing the dimensions of the song and transforming its emotion
Ok wow. This blew me away. I'm new to your music and this was the first track I chose, and wow I am humbled and inspired! This is some moody magical shit! I love how the vocals change in the pre chorus- that's so impactful and intense. Your voice is beautiful and the production of this song is really amazing. In awe! Your newest fan.
One joy of FAWM is simply listening to a song and thinking, "This is unlike anything I've ever written, or even tried to write... and I love it." The song felt like it was growing or evolving rather than cyclical/repeating. And by the end, I had that wonderful "immediate rewind" feeling. Really great work.
Haunting melodies! I feel like I’m in a crawl space in my mind. The tension never lets up—great work!
omg this is so haunting and warm and lovely—your vocal production is just right, imo, i'm obsessed!!! i hope i can navigate my way around production like this some day ᵔᴥᵔ
The production scratches my brain in just the right way. There verses are phenomenal. Your vocals are so perfect for this song. Love it
There's something about that crackling and droning noises that make this feel very situated in the world as well as inside the singer's mind. The layers take up all the space in my head and make the feelings more intense.
Beautiful song Brandon. Loved the Lo-fi vibe and the atmosphere oozes emotion. Thankful for you sharing this and I look forward to hearing more. Going to check out your albums now.
man this is great. i love the lo-fi vibe. quite put together and well orchestrated. i like the contrast of high emotion against the mellow flow…
So glad you're back this year, Brandon, and crafting raw emotion in song again. I had to buy Insomniac last year, and I have a feeling I'll be buying more based on this track. Love the multi-layered, multi-voice production, but how you still allow so much space in the sound. Gorgeous and powerful.
So many layers to this! I love all the sounds pulling me down with you.
Wow, what a mesmerizing vibe. The rawness of the lyrics really gets to me. Love your use of multiple vocal lines working independently.
Oooooo this is amazing vibes 😍 I love the emotion put into this, it comes across great. Gonna check out the past albums cause this is such a cool concept to work with the themes 👌💜
Really loving the indie R&B feel on this one. Very clean production, love the tones and the vocals and the diversity of elements.
Love the textures and the emotion poured into this. Really nice!
Sad water song beloved <3 This is beautiful & it also makes me want lay on the floor and give up for awhile. That synth sound is really neat! I love the vocal layering, it adds a ton to the dynamics. The backing vocals where you soar so high... absolutely incredible. Really amazing work! I'm so excited to see where you take this last part of the trilogy (and going full circle can be a good thing! Embrace the ourobouros!)
@chucknamaste for the verse falsetto vocals? It's mainly just pushing two takes of the same line to the opposite ends and dripping them in reverb to make them sound distant. I'm far from an expert, I just play it by ear lol
What a great production and vocal sound! Want to shed some light on that awesome verbed out vocal chain? :)
Another excellent song with all the all perfect elements! The bridge / outro (2:33) really stood out for me. So beautiful. Loving all the backing sounds I’m hearing too I believe synths and sound textures coming through. That vinyl crackling is nice touch. Very nice!
